Mazda RX-7

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Mazda RX-7 is a sports car produced by the Japanese automaker Mazda from 1978 to 2002.

The original RX-7 featured a 1,146 cc (69.9 cu in) twin-rotor Wankel rotary engine and a front-midship, rear-wheel drive layout.

The RX-7 replaced the RX-3, with both models sold in Japan as the Mazda Savanna.

The original RX-7 was a sports car with pop-up headlamps. The compact and lightweight Wankel rotary engine is situated slightly behind the front axle, a configuration marketed by Mazda as "front mid-engine". It was offered as a two-seat coupé, with optional "occasional" rear seats in Japan, Australia, the United States, and other parts of the world. The rear seats were initially marketed as a dealer-installed option for the North American markets.

The RX-7 made Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list five times. 811,634 RX-7s were produced.

The RX-7 has become notable through pop culture such as The Fast and the Furious series, Initial D, Need for Speed, Wangan Midnight, Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo."

. Series 6 (1991–1995)

" was exported throughout the world and had the highest sales. In Japan, Mazda sold the RX-7 through its ɛ̃fini brand as the ɛ̃fini RX-7. Models in Japan included the Type R, the lightweight sports model Type RZ, the Type RB, the A-spec and the Touring X, which came with a four-speed automatic transmission. Only the 1993–1995 model years were sold in the U.S. and Canada. Series 6 came with 255 PS (188 kW; 252 hp) and 294 N·m (217 lb·ft)."

. Series 7 (1996–1998)

"included minor changes to the car. Updates included a simplified vacuum routing manifold and a 16-bit ECU which combined with an improved intake system netted an extra 10 PS (7 kW). This additional horsepower was only available on manual transmission cars as the increase in power was only seen above 7000rpm, which was the redline for automatic transmission equipped cars. The rear spoiler and tail lights were also redesigned. The Type RZ model was now equipped with larger brake rotors as well as 17 inch BBS wheels. In Japan, the Series 7 RX-7 was marketed under the Mazda and ɛ̃fini brand name. The Series 7 was also sold in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Series 7 RX-7s were produced only in right-hand-drive configuration."

. Series 8 (January 1999– August 2002)

"was the final series, and was only available in the Japanese market. More efficient turbochargers were available on certain models, while improved intercooling and radiator cooling was made possible by a redesigned front fascia with larger openings. The seats, steering wheel, and instrument cluster were all changed. The rear spoiler was modified and gained adjustability on certain models. Three horsepower levels are available: 255ps for automatic transmission equipped cars, 265ps for the Type RB, and 280ps available on the top-of-the-line sporting models."

Jeep Grand Cherokee

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. While some other SUVs were manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always used a unibody chassis.

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the smaller Jeep Cherokee (XJ).

Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project.

However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design."

(...)

"The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan."

--------------------------------------------------

- First generation (ZJ) (1993–1998)

"The original Grand Cherokee was launched in 1992 as a 1993 model year vehicle in the luxury SUV segment.

The "ZJ" models, manufactured from 1992 to 1999, originally came in three trim levels: base (also known as SE), Laredo, and Limited, subsequent trims were added, included Orvis (95–99), TSI (97–99).

The base model included features such as full instrumentation, cloth interior, and a standard five-speed manual transmission, while gaining the moniker "SE" name for the 1994 model year. Power windows and locks were not standard equipment on the base trim. The minimal price tag differential resulted in low consumer demand, and as a result, the low-line model was eventually discontinued."

"The redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor (mostly fasteners). The European model was coded WG. The spare tire was relocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor. (Like the 1998 ZJ, the rear tailgate glass opened separately.)

The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by Chrysler's then-new PowerTech. The new V8 engine produced less torque than the old pushrods, but was lighter, offered better fuel economy, and provided similar on road performance figures (the 23-gallon fuel tank was replaced with one of a 20.5-gallon capacity).

The straight-six engine was also updated in 1999. A redesign of the intake manifold added 10 horsepower (7.5 kW)."

Chevrolet Camaro

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Chevrolet Camaro is an automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car and some versions also as a muscle car.

It went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced for 1967.

Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009."

Chevrolet Camaro (first generation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared in Chevrolet dealerships in September 1966, for the 1967 model year on a brand-new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and would be available as a 2-door, 2+2 seat, coupe or convertible with a choice of six-cylinder and V8 powerplants. The first-gen Camaro would last up through the 1969 model year.

The Camaro's standard drivetrain was either a 230 cu in (3.8 L) straight-6 engine rated at 140 hp (104 kW) or a 327 cu in (5.4 L) (307 cu in (5.0 L) in later in 1969) V-8 engine, backed by a Saginaw three-speed manual transmission.

There were 8 (in 67), 10 (in 68), and 12 (in 69) different engines available in 67-69 Camaros. And there were several transmission options. A four-speed manual was optional, replacing the base three-speed. The two-speed "Powerglide" automatic transmission was a popular option in 1967 and 1968 until the three-speed "Turbo Hydra-Matic 350" automatic became available starting in 1969. The larger Turbo 400 three-speed automatic was an option on SS396 cars.

There were a plethora of other options available all three years, including three main packages:

- The RS [Rally Sport] was an appearance package that included hidden headlights, revised taillights with back-up lights under the rear bumper, RS badging, and exterior bright trim. It was available on any model.

- The SS [Super Sport] performance package consisted of a 350 or 396 cu in V8 engine and chassis upgrades for better handling and to deal with the additional power. The SS featured non-functional air inlets on the hood, special striping, and SS badging.

- The Z/28 performance package was designed (with further modifications) to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am series. It included a solid-lifter 302 V8, 4-speed transmission, power disc brakes, and two wide stripes down the hood and decklid.

Almost all of 1967-1969 Camaros were built in the two U.S. assembly plants: Norwood, Ohio and Van Nuys, California. There were also five non-U.S. Camaro assembly plants in countries that required local assembly and content. These plants were located in the Philippines, Belgium, Switzerland, Venezuela, and Peru."

Spanish postcard in the Estrellas del Cine series by Ediciones Victoria, Barcelona, no. 1282.

Enid Bennett (1893-1969) was an Australian-born silent film actress, mostly active in the American cinema. She peaked in the late 1910s and early 1920s with films such as Robin Hood (1922), starring Douglas Fairbanks, and The Sea Hawk (1924). In the sound era, she played Jackie Coogan's mother in the Oscar-winning film Skippy (1931). She was the wife of director Fred Niblo and after his death of director Sidney Franklin.

Enid Eulalie Bennett was born in 1893 in York in Western Australia. She was the daughter of Nellie Mary Louise (née Walker) and Frank Bennett. She had an older brother, Francis Reginald 'Reg' Bennett, and a younger sister, actress Marjorie Bennett. After an unsuccessful attempt to start his own school, Frank took up the role of headmaster at the newly established Guildford Grammar School in 1896. He died in 1898 when he drowned in a river while suffering from depression. In 1899, Nellie married the new headmaster, Alexander Gillespie. With him, she had a daughter named Catherine and a son named Alexander. Following Gillespie's death in 1903, Nellie supported her five children by working as a school matron. Enid attended Lionel Logue's acting and elocution classes in Perth, and after receiving encouragement from Katherine Gray, a visiting American actress in 1910, she joined a touring company. By 1912, Bennett had joined the Fred Niblo-Josephine Cohan touring company, performing comedies around Australia and understudying for Cohan herself, for which she received consistently positive reviews. Her family had moved to Sydney by this time. In 1917, Reg was killed during the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium while serving with the First Australian Imperial Force. In the early part of 1915, theatre agents J. C. Williamson's decided to make short films of some of their popular plays, to forestall the release of imported American filmed versions. They used Niblo as director, and members of his troupe appeared in Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford (Fred Niblo, 1916) and Officer 666 (Fred Niblo, 1916). Enid Bennett appeared in both. Three reels of Officer 666 survive today in the National Film and Sound Archive. Film historians Andrew Pike and Ross Cooper described it as "a crude production doggedly faithful to the stage." Both films were released in Australia after Bennett left for the United States in June 1915, travelling with Niblo and his wife Cohan.

Enid Bennett's first appearance in the U.S. was on Broadway in Henry Arthur Jones' play 'Cock o' the Walk' at George M. Cohan's Theatre in late 1915 and early 1916. It was a vehicle for popular comedian Otis Skinner and Enid played a supporting part. Film roles of increasing importance followed soon after. One of her early films was The Little Brother (Charles Miller, 1917) for Kay-Bee Pictures. This brought her to the attention of Thomas H. Ince, who signed her up with the Triangle Film Corporation. From 1918 to 1921, she starred in 23 Triangle films, becoming well-established as an actress and attracting great publicity and consistently positive reviews. Following Josephine Cohan's death in 1916, Bennett married Fred Niblo in 1918. Niblo’s first US directing experience was The Marriage Ring (Fred Nibklo, 1918), with Enid in a leading role. He had learned a lot since the days of his Australian film experience. Niblo went on to direct until the early 1930s and the first years of sound film. Enid Bennett was busy. In 1922, she starred in three films, one of which became her most famous role, the female lead of Maid Marian in Robin Hood (Allan Dwan, 1922) with Douglas Fairbanks. Interviewed in the 1960s by Kevin Brownlow, Bennett said, "I had a wonderful time playing Maid Marian. Of course, the part was not too demanding, I just walked through it in a queenly manner. [Fairbanks] was wonderful, inspiring. In 1922, she and Niblo had their first child, a daughter named Loris. A son, Peter, was born later that year, and another daughter, Judith, was born in 1928. Between 1923 and 1928 her career slowed and she appeared in leading roles in fewer films. She starred opposite Ramon Novarro in Niblo's film Red Lily (Fred Niblo, 1924). Another stand-out role was as Lady Rosamund Godolphin in the adventure film The Sea Hawk (Frank Lloyd, 1924) with Milton Sills and Wallace Beery. When the film was released, New York Times critic Mordaunt Hall called it "far and away the best sea story that's yet been done up to that point"

Enid Bennett made a transition to sound, appearing as a decent mother figure in two Jackie Cooper-Robert Coogan films: Skippy (Norman Taurog, 1931), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, and its sequel Sooky (Norman Taurog, 1931). She also played a mother in Waterloo Bridge (James Whale, 1931), with Mae Clarke and Douglass Montgomery. Later at the end of the decade, she appeared in Intermezzo (Gregory Ratoff, 1939) with Ingrid Bergman, and in a few minor roles. Her last film was the Marx Brothers comedy The Big Store (Charles Reisner, 1941), in which she had an uncredited bit part as a clerk. Niblo had retired in 1933, and it appears Bennett did also. In later life, her sister Marjorie Bennett explained that, somewhat against her will, she had been encouraged by the family to join Bennett in 1915 to keep her company in the U.S. Enid helped to launch the career of her younger sister as a character actress. By the mid-1920s, their mother Nellie and their other siblings were also living in the U.S. In 1934, her brother Alexander married actress Frances Lee. The wedding was attended by some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo. Niblo and Bennett commissioned architect Wallace Neff to design their house on Angelo Drive, which they named Misty Mountain. It was completed in 1926 and sold by the couple to Jule C. Stein in 1940 after a decline in their fortunes. Fred Niblo died in 1948. In 1963, she married American film director Sidney Franklin. In later life, she resided in Malibu, California and was a sculptor and created pottery. She also worked until her death for the Christian Science Church. She regularly appeared on radio and TV, sometimes credited as Enid Bennett Niblo, hosting short Christian Science programs on healing, including Light of Faith and How Christian Science heals. In 1969, Enid Bennett died of a heart attack at her home in Malibu, California, aged 75. Her ashes were interred next to Fred Niblo’s.

Marlene Pilaete selected 40 postcards for EFSP with pictures of ladies who are related to the film world.

Marlene wrote: "I cannot be sure at 100%. Maybe some of them are anonymous pin-ups or models. I have names that come to my mind regarding some of them but I would like confirmation from other people."

So, please help us again guess who these ladies are and write your guess in the comments below. Feel free to do so and don't hesitate, please. Stupid guesses are impossible. It's just fun. Serious fun. We are really curious if we can solve this puzzle together. So come on all you Mr. and Mrs. Sherlocks, help us!

On 28 December, there will be a post at EFSP (European Film Star Postcards) with all the 40 postcards and hopefully many names.

Thanks for your guesses!

The Laurentian Library was founded as a grand Renaissance library by King Philip II in the 16th century. This space is renowned for its wealth of early printed books, especially editions from the 15th and 16th centuries, housing up to 40,000 volumes and 600 incunabula.

Furthermore, it is one of the leading examples of humanism in Spain, as prominent humanists such as Juan Páez de Castro, Juan Bautista Cardona, and Antonio Agustín collaborated with the monarch in its design. The Main Hall, or Hall of Frescoes, the most famous room in the complex, features bookshelves designed by Juan de Herrera and portraits of historical figures, mathematical and scientific instruments, maps, globes, astrolabes, reproductions of flora and fauna, coins, and a collection of medals.

The Library also boasts a large collection of engravings, with over 7,000 pieces by the finest European artists of the period, and extensive catalogs of manuscript collections from various origins (Castilian, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, etc.). Of particular note is the restoration work carried out on the Library's most important codices, as well as on drawings, musical scores from the Music Archive, works from the Document Archive, and Authentications (documents that certify the authenticity of relics).

Blonde, blue-eyed Swedish actress May Britt (1933) had a brief career as a film star in the 1950s, first in Italy and later in the United States. She retired from the screen after she married Sammy Davis, Jr. in 1960.

Maybritt Wilkens was born in 1933 (some sources mention 1934), in the Stockholm suburb of Lidingö, Sweden. Her father, Hugo Brigg-Wilkens, was a postal inspector; her mother was a housewife. Maybritt was only 18 and working as a photographer's assistant when she was discovered by two Italian filmmakers. Producer Carlo Ponti and director Mario Soldati were in Sweden to cast a young blonde woman for the title role in a new film. They came to the studio where she worked to view photographs of models. After meeting her, they offered her the part instead. May Britt, as she was renamed professionally, immediately moved to Rome. She made her film debut as the leading actress in the adventure film Jolanda la figlia del corsaro nero/Jolanda, the Daughter of the Black Corsair (Mario Soldati, 1952) with Renato Salvatori. In the following years, she worked in a dozen Cinecittà productions, including the 3-D opera adaptation Cavalleria rusticana/Fatal Desire (Carmine Gallone, 1953) with Anthony Quinn, Le infedeli/Unfaithful (Mario Monicelli, Steno, 1953) with Gina Lollobrigida, and La lupa/The She-Wolf (Alberto Lattuada, 1953). She also featured in international productions like the Eddie Constantine vehicle Ça va barder/Give 'em Hell (John Berry, 1955) and the epic Leo Tolstoy adaptation War and Peace (King Vidor, 1956) starring Audrey Hepburn, Mel Ferrer, and Henry Fonda.

In 1957, May Britt relocated to Hollywood after signing with 20th Century Fox. She starred in a few films, including the World War 2 drama The Young Lions (Edward Dmytryk, 1958) with Marlon Brando and the crime drama Murder, Inc. (Burt Balaban, Stuart Rosenberg, 1960) with Peter Falk. She also played the lead role in the remake of The Blue Angel (1959, Edward Dmytryk) co-starring Curd Jürgens. May Britt was first bombarded with adverse criticism for having the ‘audacity’ to step into the footsteps of Marlene Dietrich but her performance as Lola-Lola got pretty good reviews. A reviewer at IMDb even writes: “well made production with fine performances from Jurgens and May Britt, who shines as showgirl Lola Lola. Ms. Britt did a wonderful job recreating the old Dietrich role and in my opinion, was much better.” In 1959, after a brief marriage to actor and future horse-trainer Edwin Gregson (1958-1959), the 19-year old son of a Southern California real estate millionaire, she met Sammy Davis, Jr., the famous black entertainer. They began dating, and, after a brief engagement, were married in 1960. As one of the first interracial couples in Hollywood, Sammy and May were the targets of nasty jokes, vicious slurs, and death threats, but both survived the ordeal thanks to the strong and protective support of industry friends. 20th Century-Fox didn't renew her contract though. The studio refused to say if the action was a result of May Britt's plans to marry Sammy Davis Jr. A rumour or myth, John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy told Frank Sinatra to tell Sammy not to marry May until after the 1960 Presidential Election. At that time interracial marriage was forbidden by law in 31 U.S. states, and only in 1967 were those laws abolished by the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to the wedding, Britt converted to Judaism. She and Davis had one daughter and adopted two sons, and May retired to take care of her children. They divorced in 1968 after Davis reportedly had an affair with dancer Lola Falana. In 1967 May Britt resumed working and did television guest appearances in TV series like Mission: Impossible (1969). May Britt made a long overdue comeback to the screen in the quirky little thriller Haunts (Herb Freed, 1977). Reviewer Cavett Binion of AllMovie calls it “a surprisingly original murder mystery with some well-executed twists” and “This seedy but fun horror film is buoyed by Britt's enjoyably loony performance”. Her last appearance was in an episode of the Sci-Fi TV series Probe (1988), created by veteran television writer Michael I. Wagner and Science-Fiction author Isaac Asimov. May Britt retired and since then she has mainly been involved in painting. In 1993 May Britt married Lennart Ringquist, who was the second husband of Penny Chenery, the owner of the horse Secretariat. Ringquist passed away in 2017.
