Time lapse as the moon moves away from the sun using mylar as a filter. I used an Ioptron skytracker to move with the sun but I didn't have time to set it properly and the wind kept jerking the picture.

On August 21, 2017 the Night Sky Festival went out with a flare as a partial solar eclipse occurred over Shenandoah National Park. Visitors young and old gathered at Byrd Visitor Center to experience the wonder of this natural phenomenon together.
Switching to a Soligor 600mm f/8 lens that a friend lent me. Had to switch to ISO 1600, and the longer exposures make the surface less clear. With the XTi's 1.6 focal length multiplier, it is like a 960mm lens.

Elan, Eclipse, and Stewball after rounding the windward mark, Eclipse is getting their spinnaker up, not sure why Elan & Stewball don't have theirs up yet...
and unfortunately, this is the last photo from saturday! as shortly after, at our next gybe mark, I actually killed my little Powershot S500 -- our gybe turned into a nasty flame-out for our spinnaker, and I'd been sitting on the leeward side of the boat ready to pull the jib halyard up if needed -- so I wound up hanging on tight but was up to my ribcage in water for several moments, and the pocket my camera lives in was completely submerged. poor thing, it was such a trooper...
and I'm SO disappointed it wasn't working for the rest of this race, which was one of the most hair-raising I've ever been in: 30 kts of wind, boats spinning out everywhere, the St. Francis's official news release described it as "carnage" on the bay. but Golden Moon managed to go from 10th place, after our bad broach, to leading by sailing up the opposite side of the bay from the rest of our fleet (they ran into a wind hole behind Alcatraz & were stuck for at least 15 minutes, while we had consistent breeze), only to run straight into the path of a tanker coming in under the Golden Gate near our windward mark. we had to luff up our sails to let it pass, I think we crossed within 20 or 30 feet behind its stern, which was just incredible, having this enormous wall of hull moving so quickly past us, sitting in a lull from its wind shadow, & crossing its turbulent wake, eerie white water churning up from below... and then the wind kicked back in as GM surfed down its stern wave, and we nearly hit 14 knots of boat speed!!
but a couple of boats in our fleet were able to sneak past us while we were on the wrong side of the tanker, so we lost our lead (Kame is still muttering about that, i think), but we took third in that race, and I SO wish i had photos of it...
hopefully will upload images from sunday (taken with my old S200, as a backup camera) later tonight or tomorrow...
