This ancient inn owes its origins to the pilgrims that visited the nearby shrine of St Swithun. In the 1350’s enterprising residents of the High Street started selling souvenirs, food and drink to pilgrims from the bottom of their gardens. These stalls eventually became permanent shops and inns to form what is now The Square.

In about 1540 the present building was erected; the central siting of the fireplace is typical of a house of this period. Almost all of the timbers are original - of particular interest is the main beam in the front bar; this beam, hewn from a single oak tree, is over six metres long. The way it has been worked (the decoration ceases towards one end), suggests that it was ‘recycled’ from another building, or perhaps a ship. In 1920 the pub underwent extensive restoration, and the original front was removed and replaced with the very good “Mock Tudor” facade.

During the Eclipse’s long history the building has been: a private house, a rectory (to the Church of St Lawrence), an ale-house (in 1750) and finally an inn in the 1800’s. Legend has it that the name arose because it surpassed a nearby inn, the Sun, thereby “Eclipsing” it.

The Eclipse has an important connection with Monmouth rebellion of the 1680’s. Lady Alicia Lisle was held here for her execution after being sentenced to death for harbouring rebels by the notorious “hanging” Judge Jeffries. The trial of 27 August 1685 was a travesty of justice - 71 years old, hard of hearing, she was subjected to a tirade of abuse by Judge Jeffries and sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered that very day. Horrified clergy and citizens made such an outcry that the sentence was commuted to beheading, and many of the present safeguards in our legal system date from this time. After James II fled the country her daughters won an annulment of their mother’s conviction.

For the execution, a scaffold was erected outside the Eclipse and Lady Alicia spent the last day of her life in a small upstairs room, before being beheaded on 5th September 1685. There have been repeated sightings down the years of a (friendly) ghost of the “Lady in Grey” in the passage outside the room where Lady Alicia was held. If this ghost is in fact that of Lady Alicia, one hopes that she finds pleasure in the convivial atmosphere of this old, unspoilt and friendly inn.

On August 21, 2017 the Night Sky Festival went out with a flare as a partial solar eclipse occurred over Shenandoah National Park. Visitors young and old gathered at Byrd Visitor Center to experience the wonder of this natural phenomenon together.

This album is more known as Inner Reggae Rhythm by the Eclips band. Eclipse was a British roots outfit produced by Sidney Crooks of Pioneers fame. This being the groups only album from what I know (if you disregard the differently titled version on Canadian imprint Pioneer Music). Included are some prime slices of UK roots reggae from the 70's. »Immigration« is a fierce stepper just as is »Jah Can't Fail I« (the former having been released on 12" without dub!) whilst songs such as »Come Me Brethren« are just deep one drop skanks. The vibe is very demonstrative of what was heard being dished out in the UK at the time. Remarkable stuff.

The album was released on Baal Records in 1978. Isn't that painting on the cover wonderful by the way? It looks like a lovely lovers rock album.

March 14, 2025

I stayed up until 2:40 am, hoping to see the blood moon, but the clouds thickened and blocked the view completely by 2:15 am. These shots are of the partial eclipse portion of the total lunar eclipse of March 13th & 14th, 2025. The clouds, although annoying, actually made for an interesting effect.
