keep in mind that these tips are things that i personally feel improve photostories. while i don't mind some discussion or some slight bit of debate, it is just my opinion in the end. i'm not telling you that if you do something differently that you are doing it WRONG WRONG WRONG, because trying different things is what leads to new discoveries, but anything i talk about here is based on opinions i've formed through trial and error.

photostory tip #4, CONSISTENCY!

try to keep some semblance of consistency with your characters, while still leaving wiggle room for them to grow.

as you write, your characters will change quite a bit. sometimes they grow, sometimes they tell you things about them that you hadn't noticed before... then sometimes they run rampant like a wildebeast on an acid trip in disneyworld. in these cases, you have to say "no, marysue, you cannot suddenly unleash an until-now secret karate mastery" or "no, man's man, you don't open up this story walking around in lacey underthings" or whatever may apply. as a writer you need to know when to let your characters explore themselves and when to chain them to a chair in the basement.

hyperbole aside, your readers need to have some attachment to your characters in order to care about them and what happens to them. if you're frequently rewriting characters (or redolling, as the case may be) to the point where characters are coming and going faster than your bowels on taco night, then you need to take a step back and contemplate what it is you're really trying to accomplish and how you want to tackle it.

there is of course a niche for that sort of stuff, and if you were to embrace it, you could have a lot of fun with it. the key is to not take your characters or story too seriously. you'd want to aim for silly, and toss the characters in without focusing too much on character development or backstory. the instant you start getting to know a character, that is when it becomes harder to get rid of them without losing the interest of your readers. then if you do it TOO frequently, your readers will be like "ugh why do i bother reading this when i know my favorite character will only be around for a couple of stories before everything changes?"

if you INSIST on having more serious stories, interesting personal histories, detailed characters, etc... then consider having an actual storyline to follow from beginning to end, and try to complete that before you cycle in new characters and a new story.

now keep in mind that when you are new to stories, things are going to change a lot. characters will grow and shift (let them! just keep them moderated) and maybe you're still figuring out what style(s) of doll you like. these things are all to be expected, and nobody can fault you for it. just keep in mind that if you want to pin down your characters and get people interested in your stories, you have to make some sort of effort towards some consistency.

my advice is to start out with carefree, unimportant stories. not only is it easier for your reader to get to know your characters (this is a tip all on its own, i'll elaborate some other time), but it's easier for you to get to know them, as well. don't get into some huge crazy storyline right off the bat that's gonna get derailed after a month when you suddenly decide that maybe the main character is actually more inclined to walk around in cargo shorts than frilly dresses, talks with a scottish accent, and suddenly is 20 years younger. the bonus is that easygoing stories will give you some good practice, as well as giving you time to build up a readership (this takes time).

tl;dr, if you can't keep your characters consistent, don't be surprised when you can't keep readers interested in them.

(these tips have not been in any particular order, incase you were wondering. the numbers don't really indicate any level of importance.)

The colorful characters are to tell the audience what the audience is likely to meet in the afterlife so that, when it happens, they won't be afraid.

The second shelf holds a lot of track stuff.

Back from Key West and Florida.

We flew into Miami and drove down to Key West. On the way back, I wanted to stop and visit with John Dacey of Business Cycles, a cult fixed gear figure and shop of sorts.

So many people reference Business Cycles and the hard work that John Dacey puts into providing a lot of information out there on the web.

I consider him to be one of the best, a very humble and easygoing man who was kind to let us into the store and bother him with my fanboy antics.

He's the Miami's equivalent of Marcus Moore of Yojimbo's here in Chicago.

The culture in Australia is so relaxed and warm toward others. I was taking a late afternoon stroll down the water in Fremantle and came across this man and his wife fishing off the pier. I stopped for a quick chat and it struck me how easy it is to get to know people. In the place I grew up, people have a natural suspicion toward strangers and it's not like that at all in Fremantle.

This picture combined that easygoing nature of the town with the fact that Western Australia is known to have some of the world's best sunsets. I don't doubt it for a second.

When violet eyes get brighter

And heavy wings grow lighter

I'll taste the sky and feel alive again

And I'll forget the world that I knew

But I swear I won't forget you

Oh, if my voice could reach back through the past

I'd whisper in your ear

Oh darling, I wish you were here

1. I’m left-handed, Chinese, born and raised in Southern California.

2. I just graduated from high school as valedictorian of a class of about a thousand seniors, and I made a motivational speech about the future in front of about ten thousand spectators.

3. I’ve been playing drums since fifth grade, and I absolutely love it. This year my school’s percussion ensemble competed in Ohio and placed sixth in the nation.

4. I love the color yellow. Half of my closet is filled with yellow clothes.

5. I seriously can’t live without music. Besides drums, I also play piano and guitar, and I’ve tried my hand at composing and recording some songs. I love being poetic and writing lyrics about people I love.

6. As of now I haven’t had any trouble with academics. I got a perfect score on my PSAT, nearly perfect score on my SAT, and 5’s on twelve AP exams. But I listen to music and doodle in class and never study.

7. One of my favorite books is The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, which is apparently really controversial, but I try to live by its themes. I think the most important things in life are your work and your beliefs, and you should never let go of your sense of self.

8. I still don’t know what I want to major in, but it’ll probably be Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or Design.

9. Before photography, I spent almost all my time creating and editing films. I think I need my life to be dramatic, artsy, and meaningful.

10. I think most people who only know me by the things I’ve done think I’m arrogant and conceited, and they don’t really take the time to get to know me. Hopefully you don’t do that because I’m a really nice and easygoing guy, and I would love to get to know you!

Welcome to Bayamo

Elegant and old, this relatively hush city spells oasis to the traveler weary of confrontation. Predating both Havana and Santiago, it has been cast for time immemorial as the city that kick-started Cuban independence. Yet self-important it isn't. The ciudad de los coches (city of horsecarts) is an easygoing, slow-paced, trapped-in-time place, where you're more likely to be quoted literature than sold trinkets. Cuba's balmiest provincial capital, it resounds to the clip-clop of hooves; nearly half the population use horses for daily travel.

Bayamo has played a sacrificial role in Cuba's convoluted historical development. 'Como España quemó a Sagunto, así Cuba quemó a Bayamo,' (As the Spanish burnt Sagunto, the Cubans burnt Bayamo) wrote José Martí in the 1890s. While an 1869 arson blaze destroyed many of the city's classic colonial buildings, there's still plenty left. Neither did it undermine Bayamo's intransigent spirit or its long-standing traditions." - Lonely Planet

Gilmore has a sweet demeanor according to his foster mom. He has friendly freckles on his coat, which suits him just right. He is easy going and doesn't mind other dogs, cats or new people. On walks he likes to sniff around but doesn't get too excited over much. Indoors he likes his ball and entertains himself. He lets out a bark now and then but responds well to commands. He is just about 16 inches high. He is potty trained and neutered, vaccinated plus micro chipped so Gilmore is just waiting for a family to take him home. If you would like to meet him just fill out an application and his foster will meet you at an event or bring him to your home. Then take him for Rent-a-pet.
