End of trip essay - Morocco 2017

In a sense, it was a tough trip for me - not because of the kids, but because dealing with the locals proved difficult at times.

Moroccans can often be absolutely adamant to try to get every cent possible from foreigners and with a big group in tail , prices can (and often do) go up astronomically all of a sudden. The country ended up being more expensive than I imagined (being comparable with parts of Europe at times) which really required some fierce negotiating skills and resilience, despite the pressure. Agreed prices of accommodation and transport etc suddenly went up without notice (every time), conditions were often not what were promised and they're always unwilling to give in having the idea in mind that they're unfortunate victims and we are rich people who should support them and their twenty five children (and all the other sad stories they have). It became psychologically tiring dealing with that everyday, although I was adamant that I also have to get tougher.

This often puts me in a tough position, however, because it's not only me vs. them, but it's also what the kids witness and learn from these situations. Is it better for them to see me being a relentless tough negotiator for the sake of protecting our own group, or for me to be the generous easygoing humanitarian and putting everyone else first too. The answer lays somewhere in between and it can be tough to balance. But how can these situations be put into a positive educational experience? During our group discussions when all the kids share their own thoughts and feelings from the trip, it's very important that I put forward my ideas and feelings too, and let the kids be aware of issues that exist and possible ways to dealing with them, because after all the point of the trip is not only to see the Sahara Desert but to learn how to solve issues, be creative, thoughtful, reflective and become more aware and mature individuals through these often difficult situations. These types of skills and experience are more rewarding qualities to take home than just photos of the Atlantic Ocean and a bag full of dirty clothes.

However, nothing rewarding comes from an easy trip and travel should never be easy! This trip was, for me, a chance to ponder over alternative ideas for dealing with difficult situations. One Moroccan guy told me to get nasty and show my teeth, because those people are just bad. On the other hand, they also need to support themselves and their families, although I believe they could probably find better ways of doing that, and I don't want to encourage that dishonest behaviour by handing over cash to con artists. I should mention though, that most Moroccans are absolutely lovely people, especially when you get away from tourist areas and the harassment generally restricted to those small parts - often the parts that we have to pass through.

Despite some difficulties in that aspect, there were aspects of the trip that were a real delight. The country is beautiful. We passed through snow, over mountains, through green pastural lands, and rode camels into the Saharan sunset. We walked up and down and in and around old villages of mosques and markets. Moroccan traditional architecture and design is stunning. We met rain, walked in the snow, saw the desert freeze over night and cracked the icy sand by foot and camel back in the morning. We slept a nights in tents and in a bus at the foot of the Atlas Mountain Range, stumbled up huge sand dunes and tumbled down them again, played soccer in the desert with locals, cooked by ourselves, cleaned by ourselves, dragged backpacks around for fourteen days to cities with exotic names like Casablanca and Fez, and came into contact with thought provocative words such as Africa, Islam, Arab, Atlantic, Sahara...

And then there are the people.... our people! Our group of 27 people.

On arrival in Casablanca I could see they were all in good shape when I went to the airport to pick them up - friendly smiles, calm, positive attitude - despite such a long flight and time difference. Morocco is a long way from Qingdao. I give a big thumbs up to Emma and Lila for maintaining such a healthy and positive mood throughout the long trip. The mood and atmosphere usually starts with the leader and filters through the others, and in turn, the when all the kids have a good attitude it obviously gives more energy back to the leaders, so it was a show of true team power. It was a good start and the positive energy continued throughout the journey. There were many times when I was silently amused and pleasantly surprised by what the kids did. They were a great group, despite the big majority being first timers.

The biggest reward for me was the final meeting we had when we sat together and everyone shared their thoughts on the balcony of our accommodation in Chefchaouen. We sat there for three hours one evening and not even one of them was bored or uninterested during it! That is really something, considering the youngest is nine and the oldest is 19, but they could all be interested in each other! One other thing worth noting is on the way back from the Sahara to Fez we were expecting an eleven hour overnight bus ride which got delayed for half a day at the foot of the Atlas Mountains - because of snow. The engine of the bus was left running all night to keep the heaters on and on waking up in the morning, still at the same spot, I noticed a bit of snow on the ground and drifted back to sleep. Half an hour later the ground was covered in snow and there we sat all morning. Snow in Africa! Ice in the Sahara! The mood was great. The kids were smiling going between the snow and their seats, the breakfast shop and the toilet, stroking stray animals while sharing their snacks. No one cared about how long we'd be there, the important thing was only the moment. We were relaxed and happy. Usually in a situation like that people would be frustrated, but for us, there was no reason for anything but happiness. For me, it's a lasting impression of this trip and I'm happy to have experienced Morocco in this way with this group of kids from China.

For me it's a successful trip, because not only I learnt stuff, but because I watched the kids grow some more, push their boundaries and try something new. I'm sure they got a lot from it and tomorrow they will go back and all twenty four of them will take back a unique story and some unique experience to hopefully share with others too. That's what life is about, sharing ideas, skills, experience and happiness with others. A part of this trip will live on in me, and I'm happy to see a part of Morocco go back to Qingdao too.

How many stories happen all at once! Walking to work in the blizzard, downhill, I am reminded of those uphill-in-the-snow sad luck tales my father told... My father is still sad luck; the saddest luck, in fact. Tonight we'll talk on the phone for about three whole seconds before I'll anger him so much that he'll pass the phone back to my mom. Why can't I be compassionate with the man? I give my mom the mantra, "I can't do it. I need help." Sometimes I never want to talk to them again. What kind of a daughter says such a thing? Maybe I am in need of help. Oh, I just hate to see them so absent. Bart is absent. JD returns from Florida, singly, thankfully. I am braced for ire when the door opens, reading about the James Gang, listening for the sound of her voice. Slowly JD wins me with his easygoing banter. We dance in the kitchen like the old days, except I have a hole in my heart these days, and Bart no longer skitters at our feet. Talking to Hayes about people. Hell is other people. Michele and I keeping it positive when I have very little positive feelings for her, for the whole of it anymore. Everyone with their bitter blizzard boasts - the car was stuck, the shoveling, the unsafe drivers. I arrive in a skirt, fancy tights, lipstick even! A plow truck with a plow the length of half a street plowed me into a corner at an intersection, the driver looking down at me, me looking up at him. Sorry hon, you are but one girl, and I am clearing the whole of the road! I take a running leap. You must! It's all so beautiful! But. There are times I feel like living is what I do because I have no choice. The breath keeps coming, the clock ticks. Sometimes I watch the blinking telephone line until he answers. I'm really not a people person. I get tired of sidewalks that are not shoveled. Walking. But then there's ramen for breakfast, and a handsome friend thanking me for all the music. When he is 26, I'll be 39. When he is 39, I'll be 52. It goes on like this, growing, growing. The snow does not fall lightly in Portland, it blows in on cold winds. I don't know where to go with this, where to take it, where to end it. Tomorrow I'll pick up all the threads again.

Mezzojuso was built by the Albanians, Arbëreshëc, mostly military people established near an uninhabited house, during the migration of Albanians in Italy; on1501 they came from Albania and they had brought with them their language, customs and the Orthodox rite. From 2 to 4 August 1862 Mezzojuso welcomes Garibaldi: this is to reconnect this long and short at the same time my report, to some passages of this feast: the characteristic carnival of Mezzojuso. The "Master of Field" is the name of this carnival representation and it take the name from the principal character: this is a love story, albeit in key easygoing, which contains the re-enactment of the assault the Count of Modica made to the Castle to capture the White Queen of Navarra. The representation begins with the arrival of the royal procession, made up of the King, the Queen, by the dignitaries of the Court, from the Dame, the Secretary, by guards and by the Moors, and the "Master of Home" soul procession . Performed a dance in the square, the group go up on a stage (which is the castle); after inside the "castle" begins a dance party; therefore appear masks tied to tradition, u Rimitu, the Wizards, the gardener; comes the Master of Field, wearing a red wax mask with a hooked nose and prominent lower lip, a white shirt full of colored ribbons, pants and red coat, he squirms and shake, with his left arm to the side and in the right arm he brings a short wooden sword. Appear numerous characters, the Drummer, the Ambassador, Garibaldi and his Boys, the Captain of Artillery, the Baron and Baroness on two donkeys, followed by their men on horses and mules loaded with firewood, trunks, various paraphernalia for manufacturing cheese, so the gardener, with laurel wreaths, then the Cavalry, formed by a dozen knights who throw sweets over the spectators. The "Foforio" kidnap the wealthy and releases them after paying a small ransom (in return will be able to eat and drink at will). There are Magicians who go in search of "Treasure" and they finally found it: a bedpan full of macaroni and sausage, shouting "forio forio maccarrunario" eat them with their hands. The war rages, with Garibaldi and his Boys clashes against the Saracens (with imaginative alienation of historical periods); The Master of Field goes up on the scale that leads to the castle, meets with the King that hurts him on the head, and he falls backward (from a good height ...) to be taken from the boys that in the meantime they were prepared under the stairs; But the Master of Field is not dead and he healed his wounds, he with army of Garibaldi climb stealthily for "fake scale" and, taking advantage of the moment of confusion, they surrounding the Court and bind the King: the Field of Master removes the mask, finally embracing the Queen, managing to crown their secret dream of love, and so ends the great feast of Mezzojuso, with the procession that will march in the streets the country and ... the king in chains....

-----------------------------------------

finally ... i find lens for my Nikon - Tokina SD 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 ... test shots, looks nice ... now i need 1.8 :)

Toronto’s multicultural Kensington Market neighborhood is one of my favorite locations for stranger photos because it is a bit crazy and colorful and home to a wide variety of people including shopkeepers, artists, musicians, immigrants from many countries, and tourists. No visit to Toronto is complete without spending a couple of hours at Kensington. It is a neighborhood that comes to life as the day progresses, however, and I knew I was stretching my luck to visit it this morning around 10:00. As expected, it was still rubbing the sleep out of its eyes and many of the shops were just setting their wares out on the sidewalks and lighting their grills.

I took notice of this set of painted gates closing off the driveway between two businesses and I wished there was more pedestrian traffic (which there wasn’t). I thought it would make a bright, cheerful background for a portrait. I strolled the streets of the market and was about to move to another neighborhood when I spotted this young man standing across the street from “my” gates. I wasn't sure if he was with a group of people who were nearby. He later explained they were his family. (Had I known, I probably would have hesitated to interfere.) I approached him and introduced myself and my Human Family project and he said “Sure. Why not? I’m just waiting around for the shops to open.” Meet Noah who had come into town for the day from the university city of Guelph on his day off.

Noah was rather quiet but warm and accommodating and asked me about my camera. It turns out both of his parents were in the photography business and had worked for Nikon and for Canon. He didn’t seem to hold it against me that my camera was neither. I showed him my portrait concept and guided him into position. I experienced reflection problems with his glasses so off they came. The light was fairly flat on the shaded side of the street so out came the reflector which Noah was familiar with and held once I got it positioned. The light was still a bit unidimensional but the reflector did add some snap to Noah’s eyes.

Photos taken, we chatted. Noah is 19 and will be turning 20 in a few days. He is working as a pharmacist assistant in a drug store. “How do you like the job?” I asked. “Oh, it’s ok,” he replied. We get quite a few cranky seniors wanting their medications and not wanting to wait.” I asked if that was a big frustration (secretly hoping that I’m not one of those cranky seniors). He said “Not really. I’m a pretty easygoing person and don’t get upset readily. He did, in fact, seem quite calm and easygoing. He would be great in a public contact job. When I asked if he was planning on staying in that job or using it as a stepping stone he said “I think I’d prefer a job where I was helping people more, like perhaps Social Work.” Well, hello. I explained I’m a retired Social Worker who spent most of my career training Social Work graduate students. It was an interesting chat.

“Anything else you are interested in?” “Yes” he said. “I’m a Trans activist.” Interesting. I mentioned that the office I used to work in had been in the gay community and I was familiar with some of the issues affecting the transgender community. He was interested in hearing that.

“Do you have a message to share with the world through the Human Family project?” He thought for a moment and said “Some things in life are more worth fighting for than others. You should pick your battles.” When I asked for a battle worth fighting for he said “Equal rights for transgendered people.”

Just then a woman called down the street and I thought she was telling us to get out of the driveway. Noah said “Oh, that’s my mother. I’d better get going. She’s tired of waiting.” Oops. We exchanged contact information as we walked together to join her and she asked what we were doing. I explained the project and said it is about the Human Family and combines photography with creating good will between strangers. She liked the idea but said she was hesitant to be photographed. “Unlike Noah” she said, giving him a friendly hug. I told him I was glad he had proven to be brave.

Thank you Noah for taking the time to meet and chat and for participating in my photography project. I’m glad there are people like you who are committed to a more just society.

This is my 43rd submission to the Human Family group on Flickr.

You can view more street portraits and stories by visiting The Human Family.

Follow-up: Noah was kind enough to send me an email upon receiving his photos. He answered my question about family support by saying "You asked about my parents, they have always been supportive of my transition - it was obviously very hard in the beginning as it would be for any parent. But it's been a few years now and they're always on my side - I'm very lucky because like you said so many trans people do not have the support like I do."

Regarding the photos he had this to say: "Jeff. Wow! These shots are great! I have to tell you - it's actually very weird for me to be looking at these pictures and for once feel proud about my appearance. Being transgender and growing up - I was obviously very disphoric when it came to my appearance. But I've been transitioning for the past 6 years - and it's really cool to not only see my physical changes in these photos, but how you captured a little bit of that confidence I've built over the years. If you could maybe add my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/shabammitsnoah hopes that if anybody from the transgender community were to see these photos maybe they could find some help in the videos I make. Thanks for the opportunity - it was fun! Cheers. Noah"

Needless to say I was very happy to learn that our stranger encounter had this effect and it was one more example of the positive impact the Human Family project can have.

By the way, Noah's YouTube channel is a lot of fun. He is amusing and warm-hearted and very genuine. What a great role model he is for the trangender community.

Sir Joseph Austen Chamberlain KG (16 October 1863 – 17 March 1937) was a British statesman, son of Joseph Chamberlain and half-brother of Neville Chamberlain.

He stood for the Liberal Unionist party, which merged with the Conservatives in 1912, and led the Conservatives in the Commons in 1921-22. As Foreign Secretary, he negotiated the Locarno Pact (1925), aimed at preventing war between France and Germany, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was one of the few MP’s who supported Churchill’s appeals for rearmament against the Nazi threat in the 1930s.

Austen Chamberlain was born in Birmingham, the second child and eldest son of Joseph Chamberlain, then a rising industrialist and political radical, later Mayor of Birmingham and a dominant figure in Liberal and Unionist politics at the end of the 19th century. His mother, the former Harriet Kenrick, died in childbirth, leaving his father so shaken that for almost twenty-five years he maintained a distance from his first-born son. In 1868, his father married Harriet's cousin, Florence, and had further children, the oldest of whom, Neville, would become Prime Minister in the year of Austen's death.

Austen was educated first at Rugby School, before passing on to Trinity College, Cambridge. While at Trinity College, he became a lifelong friend of F. S. Oliver, a future advocate of Imperial Federation and, after 1909, a prominent member of the Round Table movement. Chamberlain made his first political address in 1884 at a meeting of the university's Political Society and was vice-president of the Cambridge Union Society.

It would seem that from an early age his father had intended for politics to be Austen's future path and with this in mind he was sent first to France, where he studied at the Paris Institute of Political Studies and developed a lasting admiration for the French people and culture. For nine months, he was shown the brilliance of Paris under the Third Republic, and met and dined with the likes of Georges Clemenceau and Alexandre Ribot.

From Paris, Austen was sent to Berlin for twelve months, to imbibe the political culture of the other great European power, Germany. Though in his letters home to Beatrice and Neville he showed an obvious preference for France and the lifestyle he had left behind there, Chamberlain undertook to learn German and learn from his experience in the capital of the Kaiserreich. Among others, Austen met and dined with the "Iron Chancellor" Otto von Bismarck, an experience that was to hold a special place in his heart for the duration of his life.

While attending the University of Berlin, Austen developed a suspicion of the growing nationalism in the German Empire based upon his experience of the lecturing style of Heinrich von Treitschke, who opened up to him "a new side of the German character - a narrow-minded, proud, intolerant Prussian chauvinism", the consequences of which he was later to ponder during the First World War and the crises of the 1930s.

Austen returned to the United Kingdom in 1888, lured largely by the prize of a parliamentary constituency. He was first elected to parliament as a member of his father's own Liberal Unionist Party in 1892, sitting for the seat of East Worcestershire. Owing to the prominence of his father and the alliance between the anti-Home Rule Liberal Unionists and Conservatives, Chamberlain was returned unopposed on 30 March, and at the first sitting of the new session he walked up the floor of the house flanked by his father and his uncle Richard.

Owing to the dissolution of parliament and the August general election, Chamberlain was unable to make his maiden speech until April 1893. This speech, when delivered, was acclaimed by the four-time Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone as "one of the best speeches which has been made". That Chamberlain was speaking against Gladstone's Second Home Rule Bill does not seem to have dampened the enthusiasm of the Prime Minister, who responded by publicly congratulating both Austen and his father Joseph on such an excellent performance. This was highly significant, given the bad blood existing between Joseph Chamberlain and his former leader.

Appointed a junior Whip of the Liberal Unionists after the general election, Austen's main role was to act as his father's "standard bearer" in matters of policy. Following the Conservative and Unionist landslide win in the election of 1895, Chamberlain was appointed a Civil Lord of the Admiralty, holding that post until 1900, when he became Financial Secretary to the Treasury. In 1902, following the retirement of Prime Minister Salisbury, Chamberlain was promoted to the position of Postmaster General by the new premier, the Conservative Arthur Balfour.

In the wake of the struggle between his father and Balfour, Austen Chamberlain became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1903. Austen's appointment was largely a compromise solution to the bitter division of the two Unionist heavyweights, which threatened to split the coalition between supporters of Chamberlain's Imperial Tariff campaign and Balfour's more cautious advocacy of protectionism. While Austen supported his father’s programme, his influence within the cabinet was diminished following the departure of the senior Chamberlain to the back benches. Facing a resurgent Liberal opposition and the threat of an internal party split, Balfour eventually took the Unionists into opposition in December 1905, and in the ensuing rout in the election of 1906, Austen Chamberlain found himself one of the few surviving Liberal Unionists in the House of Commons.

After his father's stroke and enforced retirement from active politics a few months later, Austen became the effective leader of the Tariff Reform campaign within the Unionist Party, and thus a contender for the eventual leadership of the party itself.

Pressure from the Conservative opposition, in part led by Chamberlain, eventually resulted in the formation of the wartime coalition government, in 1915. Chamberlain joined the cabinet as Secretary of State for India. Like other politicians, including Balfour and Curzon, Chamberlain supported the invasion of Mesopotamia to increase British prestige in the region, thus discouraging a German-inspired Muslim revolt in India.

Chamberlain remained at the India Office after Lloyd George succeeded Asquith as Prime Minister in late 1916, but following inquiries into the failure of various British campaigns in Mesopotamia (undertaken by the separately-administered Indian Army) in 1915, including the loss of the British garrison at Kut, Chamberlain resigned his post in 1917, because as the minister ultimately responsible, the fault lay with him. He was widely acclaimed for such a principled act.

After Lloyd George’s Paris speech (12 November 1917) at which he said that “when he saw the appalling casualty lists he wish(ed) it had not been necessary to win so many (“victories”)” there was talk of Chamberlain withdrawing support from the government. Lloyd George survived by claiming that the aim of the new inter-Allied Supreme War Council was purely to “coordinate” policy, not to overrule the British generals who still enjoyed a good deal of support from Conservatives. Later he returned to government and became a member of the War Cabinet in April 1918 as Minister without Portfolio, replacing Lord Milner, who had become Secretary of State for War.

Following the victory of the Lloyd George coalition in the elections of 1918, Chamberlain was again appointed to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in January 1919 and immediately faced the huge task of restoring Britain’s finances after four years of wartime expenditure.

Citing ill health, Bonar Law retired from the leadership of the Conservative branch of the Lloyd George government in the spring of 1921. Due to his seniority and the general dislike of Lord Curzon, his counterpart in the House of Lords, Chamberlain succeeded Bonar Law as Leader of the House of Commons and also took over in the office of Lord Privy Seal. He was succeeded at the Exchequer by Sir Robert Horne, and it seemed that after ten years of waiting, Austen would again be given the opportunity of succeeding to the premiership. The Lloyd George coalition was beginning to falter, following numerous scandals and the unsuccessful conclusion of the Anglo-Irish War, and it was widely believed that it would not survive until the next general election. Though he had previously had little regard for Lloyd George, the opportunity of working closely with the “Welsh Wizard” gave Chamberlain a new insight into his nominal superior in the government (by now, the Conservative Party was by far the largest partner in the government).

This was an unfortunate change of allegiance for Chamberlain, for by late 1921 the Conservative rank-and-file was growing more and more restless for an end to the coalition and a return to single-party (and therefore Conservative) government. Conservatives in the House of Lords began to publicly oppose the coalition, and disregarded calls for support from Chamberlain. In the country at large Conservative candidates began to oppose the coalition at by-elections and this discontent spread to the House of Commons. In the autumn of 1922, Chamberlain faced a backbench revolt (largely led by Stanley Baldwin) designed to oust Lloyd George, and when he summoned a meeting of Conservative MPs at the Carlton Club on 19 October, a motion was passed in favour of fighting the forthcoming election as an independent party. Chamberlain resigned the party leadership rather than act against what he believed to be his duty, and was succeeded by Bonar Law, whose views and intentions he had divined the evening before the vote at a private meeting. Bonar Law formed a government shortly thereafter, but Chamberlain was not given a post nor, it would seem, would have he accepted a position had it been offered.

Chamberlain, his half-brother Neville and Iain Duncan Smith are the only Conservative leaders not to lead the party into a general election. Until William Hague in 1997, Chamberlain was the only twentieth century Conservative leader never to become Prime Minister.

At the second resignation of Bonar Law in May 1923 (Law died from throat cancer later that year), Chamberlain was passed over again for the leadership of the party in favour of Stanley Baldwin. Baldwin offered Chamberlain the post of Lord Privy Seal, but Chamberlain insisted that other former ministers from the Coalition should be included as well and Baldwin refused. However Chamberlain did return to government when Baldwin formed his second ministry following success in the election of October 1924, serving in the important office of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1924 to 1929. In this office, Chamberlain was largely allowed a free hand by the easygoing Baldwin.

It is as Foreign Secretary that Chamberlain’s place in history was finally assured. In a difficult period in international relations, Chamberlain faced not only a split in the Entente Cordiale occasioned by the French invasion of the Ruhr but also the controversy over the Geneva Protocol (1924), which threatened to dilute British sovereignty over the issue of League of Nations economic sanctions.

Despite the importance to history of these pressing issues, Chamberlain’s reputation chiefly rests on his part in the negotiations over what came to be known as the Locarno Pact of 1925. Seeking to maintain the post-war status quo in the West, Chamberlain responded favourably to the approaches of the German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann for a British guarantee of Germany’s western borders. Besides promoting Franco-German reconciliation, Chamberlain's main motive was to create a situation where Germany could pursue territorial revisionism in Eastern Europe peacefully. Chamberlain's understanding was that if Franco-German relations improved, France would gradually abandon the Cordon sanitaire, as the French alliance system in Eastern Europe was known between the wars. Once France had abandoned its allies in Eastern Europe as the price of better relations with the Reich, this would create a situation where the Poles and Czechoslovaks having no Great Power ally to protect them, would be forced to adjust to German demands, and hence in Chamberlain's view would peacefully hand over the territories claimed by Germany such as the Sudetenland, the Polish Corridor and the Free City of Danzig (modern Gdańsk, Poland) In this way, promoting territorial revisionism in Eastern Europe in Germany’s favour was one of Chamberlain's principal reasons for Locarno.

Together with Aristide Briand of France, Chamberlain and Stresemann met at the town of Locarno in October 1925 and signed a mutual agreement (together with representatives from Belgium and Italy) to settle all differences between the nations by arbitration and never resort to war. For his services, Chamberlain was not only awarded the Nobel Peace Prize but also made a Knight of the Order of the Garter; Chamberlain was the first ordinary Knight of the Garter since Elizabethan times (Sir Henry Lee) to die without having been made a peer. Chamberlain also secured Britain's accession to the Kellogg-Briand Pact, which theoretically outlawed war as an instrument of policy. Chamberlain famously said that Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was "a man with whom business could be done."

Following his less-satisfactory engagement in issues in the Far East and Egypt, and the resignation of Baldwin’s government after the election of 1929, Chamberlain resigned his position as Foreign Secretary and went into retirement. He briefly returned to government in 1931 as First Lord of the Admiralty in Ramsay MacDonald's first National Government, but soon retired after having been forced to deal with the unfortunate Invergordon Mutiny.

Over the next six years as a senior backbencher he gave strong support to the National Government but was critical of their foreign policy. In 1935 the government faced a parliamentary rebellion over the Hoare-Laval Pact and Austen’s opposition to the vote of censure is widely believed to have been instrumental in saving the government from defeat on the floor of the House. Chamberlain was again briefly considered for the post of Foreign Secretary, but was passed over once the crisis was over, on the grounds that he was too old for the job. Instead his advice was sought as to the suitability of his former Parliamentary Private Secretary, now Minister for the League of Nations, Anthony Eden for the post. Winston Churchill claims in his memoirs that had this crisis ended differently Chamberlain may have been called upon as a respected statesman to form a government of his own, but this view is not widely supported, and may be in part due to Chamberlain’s position as the first public champion of what later became Churchill’s great cause – opposition to the German Nazi government of Adolf Hitler.

During the period 1934 to 1937, Chamberlain was, with Winston Churchill, Roger Keyes and Leo Amery, the most prominent voice calling for British rearmament in the face of a growing threat from Nazi Germany. In addition to speaking eloquently in Parliament on the matter, he was the chairman of two Conservative parliamentary delegations in late 1936 that met with the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, to remonstrate with him about his government’s delay in rearming the British defence forces. More respected in this period than Churchill, Chamberlain became something of an icon to young Conservatives, as the last survivor of the Victorian Age of high politics.

Though he never again served in a government, Sir Austen Chamberlain survived in good health until March 1937, dying just ten weeks before his half-brother Neville Chamberlain became the first and only member of the Chamberlain dynasty to become Prime Minister.

Chamberlain died on 17 March 1937 aged 73.

His estate was probated at £45,044, a relatively modest sum for such a famous public figure. Much of his father's fortune had been lost in an attempt to grow sisal in the West Indies in the early 1890s, and unlike his younger brother Neville, Austen never went into business to make money for himself.

The personal and political papers of Sir Austen Chamberlain are housed in the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham.

Two great nonconformists of Italian music and their easygoing, ironic and irresistible swing blues

JazzAscona 2019 presents two great stars of Italian music: Sergio Caputo and Francesco Baccini. The two, voice and guitar the former, and voice and piano, the latter, form the “The Swing Brothers”. Members of a band that came to be almost by chance in 2016, the two artists clearly enjoy each other’s company on stage, in shows that are ironic and easygoing. Baccini and Caputo are two of the most original, nonconformist musicians in the Italian scene; together they produced Chewing Gum Blues, a record that goes back to the basics of swing and blues. In their live show they will present their joyful album songs, as well as their greatest hits, such as Caputo’s Un sabato italiano and Il Garibaldi innamorato or Baccini’s Le donne di Modena and Sotto questo sole.

I was fortunate enough to meet Rik at 95.1 WIIL FM in Kenosha, Wis. last Friday, 4/21/00. He came in for a live "on air" performance. I have been a fan since the Triumph days, and I always thought that his music carried a very positive message. Upon meeting him, I was even more pleased at talking with one of the nicest, and easygoing people I have ever encountered. He has a GREAT sense of humor, and even played "e;Midsummer's Daydream"e; for the radio audience ....because I requested it. Rik Emmett personifies what a true "star" should be........someone that enjoys his career, his music, and his fans. Ed Marshall, Spring Grove, IL

Lissandra was born far in the north, almost the other side

of creation from the place that would one day be her home. She grew up in Whitehall, the daughter of one of the local women, raped by one of the fierce barbarians of the northlands. She was always an outsider, her appearance taking after father, with her pale white hair and large size. From childhood she towered over the other children, and by the time she was becoming a woman she was one of the tallest people in the city. With few options in the city besides joining the guard and likely getting tossed into all the worst jobs, she left the city, travelling south from Whitehall. During the travels, she strayed from the road during a blizzard, beset by deadly cold and harried by undead and fae, she should have died. But at the last moment, as she was ready to give in, she heard the voice of the unconquered sun, and was exalted. She fought her way back out of the icy wastes, eventually reaching the inner sea.

Here she met a craftsman (Markos) from the south, a blacksmith by trade who was visiting the north to find a source of new material for his forge. He took in the huge girl, first as someone to do the heavier work for him, but eventually training her, teaching her the ways of the forge as they returned to the south. He also discovered her secret, but by then knew she was no monster, and had little enough respect for teh dragons as it was. He took her back home to Chiascura, where he owned a massive smithy with several forges and Blacksmiths. Lissandra was an outsider, but her skill and easygoing personality soon won over the rest of the smiths, and she became part of the family.

Over the next few years, Lissandra made a few trips to some of the darker parts of the city and the surroundings, helping those around her when they were threatened by evil, and following strange 'feelings' that lead her ever more southward into the mountains to the south of the city. It was here she found her manse and hammer, and forged her armor from the supplies she found there. Lately, she's been feeling another pull...

Appearance - Lissandra is a huge woman, over seven feet tall and massively muscled, putting even most men to shame. Despite this she still maintains a certain beauty, though in most cases it's one men admire but rarely brave touching. Her long white hair hangs past her waist, often tied back in a loose ponytail when she travels, or coiled in a long braid when she works the forge. Typically she wears little more than her armoring, a belt and chainmail affair she made, with a hearthstone set in the center of the belt. When she travels she wears a cloak or simple robes over this, and tall boots of thick leather.

Personality - Lissandra is a quiet, introspective woman, either busying herself working at the forge, or planning her next project or trip. During her time off she spends time with her friends from the forge, and can be much more outgoing when she tries to be, often becoming the center of the party. In contrast to many of her zenith brethren, she's not much of a preacher, preferring to work and building or rebuilding things around her, and helping out actively.

The lecturer of the fashion designers in our school, Andreas Trommler, gave us the permission to photograph his newest work. It was such an honour and his creations are outstanding. It was my first time to work with a professional model and Julia was such a sweet easygoing person. She's beautiful!!!

.... Many people take part in this unique and lively pantomime, there are pastors by mule or donkey, which give the people some pieces of bread, wine and sausages, there are ladies with sweet looks that have beautiful smiles, there are horsemen riding on colts, throwing sweets on bystanders, there are horrific figures like Fofori, who kidnap the rich by forcing them to pay a symbolic offering, there are the Wizards, who finally found the treasure (a chamber pot full of macaroni, drinking wine from a container of urine), there is the Genral Garibaldi supported by his soldiers, there are their enemies the Turks, there is 'U Remitu (the hermit) ... there are the bomb squad .. .and much others figures....! (Here the young actor will play the pander of the Court, named "Master of House" which organizes in secret the arrival of Master of Field to the Castle ... ) ....

....) ....

The Marvel Superstar Kevin Feige Can’t Wait To Pair Up With Benedict Cumberbatch

In the wake of being easygoing said in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Stephen Strange is at last making his showy presentation one month from now. Since Doctor Strange will be a root story investigating...

www.webdizzy.com/marvel-superstar-kevin-feige-cant-wait-p...

I've been lucky to have had the opportunity to go shooting with Troy Holden a few times and I've admired his easygoing way of approaching people and getting portraits, and it's something I've been wanting to try and emulate myself. Getting it together and approaching strangers for a portrait has been harder than I thought it'd be. While doing a photo walk with Troy and Brandon Doran last weekend, we were walking along Haight St. and were approached by one of the many folks who clearly lived on the street. This guy - and I'm ashamed to say that I didn't catch his name - approached us, so I went with it, secretly hoping he'd let me take a picture. The smell of alcohol on his breath and the blood seeping from a wound above his eye set off alarm bells, but I went with it anyway.

"Hey man, you got a kind word?", he said.

"I'm sorry?"

"Man, I was just walkin' along and I saw this couple in the doorway and I asked how they were doin'"

"Doesn't sound too bad?"

"So the guy gets up, says 'Fuck you!' and then he hits me with a bottle, man!"

"Dude, that does suck!"

"Look at these cuts, man!"

(shows me a deep raw cut along his wrist and indicates to the cut above his eye)

We chatted for a bit, and it turns out this is his lifestyle - he comes to San Francisco for nine months of the year, and spends the other three in Chicago, where its 'fucking cold, man'. Turns out this sort of thing isn't all that unusual, and Haight St. historically has attracted those who for one reason or another drop out of mainstream society for a while.

Coincidentally, I went to a talk by local photographer Frederic Larson last Tuesday where, amongst other things, he talked about the nine months he spent in 2001 documenting and living amongst the teenage drifters on Haight St. 'Nobody's child' was the article that resulted, and there's an amazing gallery of the photos he took here.

The important things in life are just a few

Portrait des Monsters (Glenn Strange) im tiefen Schatten

" Glenn Strange is a contemplative Monster in this striking portrait, which recently appeared in a Heritage auction.

Glenn Strange (1899-1973) first came to Hollywood in 1930 as a singing cowboy with The Arizona Wranglers. With rugged good looks and the strapping six-five frame that earned him the nickname “Pee Wee”, Strange was immediately cast in horse operas, embarking on a career that would span 40 years and over 300 films, almost all of them westerns.

Sporting names like Slim, Bull, Bat, Bart, Blackie, Tex or Stu-Bum, Strange’s characters operated both sides of the law, equally reliable in lynch mobs or a sheriff’s posse. He was just as likely to appear as a dirty low-down rustler or some poker-faced gunman as he was a stalwart Marshal, a steadfast stagecoach driver, or an easygoing harmonica-playing cowhand. A standout part was that of the murderous Butch Cavendish, The Lone Ranger’s nemesis, which he repeated in movies and on TV between 1949 and 1955.

In the Fifties, when westerns were a television staple, Strange worked all the classic series from Hopalong Cassidy and Gene Autry to The Rifleman, Cheyenne, and Rawhide, eventually earning a regular spot, starting in 1961, on Gunsmoke, quietly polishing shot glasses through 210 episodes as the rock steady, mustachioed bartender, Sam.

For all the interchangeable cowpokes he portrayed, Strange fairly shined in his rare appearances outside the western genre. He showed great flair for comedy as a memorable Hillbilly character, Devil Dan Winfield, in the otherwise minor Abbott and Costello vehicle Comin’ Round the Mountain (1951). In fantasy films, Strange first appeared, briefly and uncredited, as one of Ming’s minions in a 1936 Flash Gordon serial. In 1942’s The Mad Monster, a Poverty Row B-movie devised to cash in on the runaway success of Universal’s The Wolf Man (1941), Strange’s size served the part of Petro, a hulking, simple-minded handyman who turns into a hairy, fanged monster. In 1944, Strange played a hulking orderly in the bizarre acromegaly horror film The Monster Maker, and he was back in heavy makeup — created by Jack Pierce, freelancing after being dumped by Universal — as Atlas, a hairy giant whose brains get switched with Huntz Hall’s in Master Minds, a 1949 Bowery Boys comedy.

Glenn Strange’s most famous and enduringly popular role, no doubt, was playing the last of Universal’s Frankenstein Monsters. By 1944, the Monster had become a stock character, trotted out with Dracula and The Wolf Man in kitchen sink monster rallies. In House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945), the monsters, with attendant hunchbacks and mad doctors, were displayed and quickly dispatched in what amounts to individual vignettes, with little or no interaction. Strange’s Frankenstein, after spending most of the show strapped to a slab, was activated in time for a short, climactic walkabout and a quick, catastrophic end.

Without a lot of screen time and very little to do besides glowering at torch-bearing villagers, Strange’s contributions might have been a footnote to Frankenstein film history if not for an unlikely third film, the brilliant Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). With a stellar cast that included Chaney as The Wolf Man and Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Strange’s Monster was a central character, interacting with the principals and chasing The Boys in a wild, genuinely funny romp that became one of the most influential movie comedies ever made.

Strange would go on to promote the film with a number of personal appearances wearing an over-the-head mask made for him by Don Post, eventually appearing again with Abbott and Costello, with The Creature from the Black Lagoon thrown in for good measure, in a 1954 episode of The Colgate Comedy Hour on TV. The affable actor even participated in one of fan-filmmaker Don Glut’s 16mm epics, the Frankenstein’s Fury episode of Adventures of The Spirit, in 1963.

The Frankenstein makeup worked very well with Strange’s craggy deadpan. With a boxy head, big shoulders and his trademark windup-toy thread, Glenn Strange gave the Frankenstein Monster its definitive pop culture profile. It was Glenn Strange’s features that would be sampled for a best-selling Frankenstein rubber mask, and his face that was repeatedly used on toy packaging. Significantly, perhaps inevitably, when Boris Karloff died in 1969, most newspaper obits were illustrated with a photo of Glenn Strange in Frankenstein makeup. "
