Review by Miguel, San Juan, Puerto Rico. "Must do! If you are in NY and are able to book this tour. Do it without thinking it twice. Leanne was lovely and she let me see the essence of El Barrio!" - Miguel, San Juan, Puerto Rico. www.shootnewyorkcity.com/reviews/2017/2/15/review-by-migu...

The Harlem & El Barrio Photo Tour is one of many suggested tours that I offer and it is probably my most popular tour. Harlem and El Barrio or East Harlem are fabulous neighborhoods and the people are very friendly. We always have fun on the streets shooting, talking about techniques and about this fabulous city. You can find more information or contact me to reserve a tour at this link

Half a ghost sign on Second Avenue in East Harlem for Hencken & Co. who were a coal and wood supplier. The audience here were the passengers on the elevated Second Avenue line that ran from 1878 to 1940.
The missing upper half of the sign is visible in the 1940 tax photo of the property.
The addresses on the sign are a bit mysterious at first. The top line is "94th St. E.R." which I eventually realized was 94th Street at the East River. The second line was even more puzzling until I saw the old photo where you can see '4" " " '. That is they used ditto marks instead of painting "4th St. E.R.". The last line is "Stanton St. E.R". That's all confirmed by an ad in an 1890 city directory.
On a photo tour on yesterday we encountered this couple. Summer Fun in El Barrio, 26 June 2017. snyctours.com/2017/06/28/summer-fun-in-el-barrio/
An impressive mural in El Barrio, East Harlem. Originally created in 1999 by the Ricanstruction Network and the Puerto Rico Collective and restored in 2011. The mural is composed of portraits of Pedro Albizu Campos and Che Guevara.
The name "Dos Alas" (Two Wings) is a reference to an 1893 poem written by Lola Rodriguez de Tio "Cuba and Puerto Rico are two wings of the same bird". The quote appears on the mural.
Walking through a pedestrian tunnel on my way to explore East Harlem also know as Spanish Harlem/ El Barrio.

A ghost sign for Tutt's Liver Pills on Third Ave in East Harlem where it would have easily been seen by passengers on the Third Avenue Elevated train line that operated from 1878 until 1955. Tutt's Liver Pills were popular in the late-19th century. They were still being sold as late as 1915 when they were sued for selling fake medicine but it is not clear when they went out of business.
Here's where things get interesting. Take a look at the 1940 tax photo. Instead of Tutt's there's a Gold Medal Flour sign. The bottom right border of the Gold Medal sign is still visible. Did the rest of the sign fade away, leaving the Tutt's ghost?
Review by Mary Beth, New York City - "El Barrio Workshop - Excellent workshop! Leanne escorted us around El Barrio, taking us to areas I would never have found on my own. She also gave me lighting tips to help me get the type of shot I was seeking. I'm planning on taking another workshop with her this summer." - Mary Beth, New York City. www.shootnewyorkcity.com/reviews/2017/5/23/review-by-mary...
Building on the northwest corner of 106th and Lexington in East Harlem. Believe it or not that awning is less than ten years old.
In the Barrio - Here's a recent photo that I took from a Harlem Street Photography Workshop. I've been in a real black and white mood lately. I create my own presets in On One software which I use as a plugin in Lightroom. I am an advocate of working on series of photographs. Working on themes. Sometimes the themes are very specific. Other times it's really about using the same processing as a method of unifying a body of work. It's also a good method of being more objective about your work. The next Harlem Street Photography Workshop is on Sunday 16 April and there are a few spaces still available. And we talk about creating a body of work and processing photos as well. www.shootnewyorkcity.com/blog/2017/4/4/in-the-barrio

Commercial building on far east 119th Street that now houses the warehouse and workshop for John Rosselli Antiques. The building was a commercial laundry circa 1940.
NYC vs. Crack.
When I moved to NYC from France.
East Harlem.
The city was dirty, dangerous, crack battle and full of HUGE mice.
The subway system was disgusting.
