Public art project "Mapping Resistance: The Young Lords in El Barrio" depicts the activist history of the Young Lords in East Harlem. Using the photography of Hiram Maristany, one of the original members of the group and their official photographer - the historic photos were installed at the same locations where the events took place 50 years ago. The project was organized by artist Miguel Luciano.

Mural: "El Regalo Magico/The Magic Gift"

Artists: El Mac and Cero

The mural refers to the gift of inspiration and depicts the New York/Puerto Rican author Nicholasa Mohr. She lives nearby and is one of the first widely published Latina authors in the US. The mural is part of the MonumentArt project completed in 2015 - I think there were 8 murals completed by 11 artists in East Harlem and The Bronx

A wonderful mural at a public school in East Harlem. Usually this mural is behind a locked gate but today the gates of hell were open and this sun certainly shines.

By artist Andre Trenier. Part of the 100 Gates Project.

From Wikipedia:

"The mission of the project was to enhance the beauty of the neighborhoods by working exclusively with local artists and merchants to paint murals on the metal security gates of participating stores. In 2014, the project began creating murals on the Lower East Side and set out to paint a total of 100 security gates. As of 2016, the project has surpassed its name and is currently working towards creating over 100 more murals in East Harlem and Downtown Staten Island combined."
