happy Easter everyone...

...we head off today for a wedding, an easter egg hunt, a birthday party and a week at the farm...

have fun!

HAPPY EASTER to you, dear Flickr friends. Have a wonderful, blessed and safe holiday. Belated PASSOVER greetings to all.

I wanted to photograph this ranucula one more time before it dried up, so I drug out my Lensbaby. When I finished p-processing it, I was struck with the feeling that it was a bit Georgia O’Keeffe-ish. Hope you enjoy it!

We celebrated Easter 2019 with our son, Brian, and his family in Columbus, Ohio.

Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter.

The egg is a pagan symbol of the rebirth of the Earth in celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus

In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ, shed on the Cross, and the hard shell of the egg symbolized the sealed Tomb of Christ—the cracking of which symbolized his resurrection from the dead. Easter eggs are blessed by the priest at the end of the Paschal Vigil, and distributed to the faithful.

================================================

In the Romanian villages there is a special tradition in the decoration of Easter eggs, and some of them are really masterpieces

Happy Easter wishes for all!

Bandit's impression of the Easter bunny. I took a whole series of the dogs, this being the first. He wasn't thrilled with the ears and made this face.

My Easter tulips have another shot at showing off their beauty - this time in decay. The petals remind me of a bow. I would have loved more light, but I was afraid if I moved them away from the window the petals would fall!

I've been playing around with new recipes, so I thought I might as well start on some Easter designs while I was at it! It's been so long since I piped a royal icing flower, I actually had to go back to my Wilton class books to remember how! :)

White eggs are in such short supply that we only dyed six eggs this year.

I tried natural Easter egg dyes for the first time this year. These eggs are dyed red/rust using yellow onion skins. I read several different sites for how to make natural-dyed eggs. I ended up combining several different techniques—here is what I did:

Directions

Large white eggs

Two tablespoons white vinegar and/or one teaspoon cream of tartar

Hose (I used knee-highs, which were $1 for three pair)

Assorted leaves, flowers, and stickers

Scissors

Four to five quart pan

Bowl

Colander/strainer

Slotted spoon

Rack placed over paper bags

Oil

Paper towel

Yellow onion skins (I filled a produce bag at the grocery store by digging at the bottom of the onion bin. I would say I collected almost enough skins to fill a one-gallon plastic jug)

1. First, I washed all of the eggs with soap to make sure they were free of oil or grease, but this is probably optional.

2. Place an egg in the pan and fill it with enough water to cover the top of the egg by at least an inch. Remove the egg.

3. Add the onion skins, press down, and bring to a boil. Boil for 30 minutes partially covered to minimize evaporation, stirring occasionally. The water should be a deep rusty orange.

4. Allow water to cool slightly, and then strain contents over a bowl, pressing skins to remove any remaining liquid.

5. Rinse pan, pour in dye water, cover, and return to low heat to keep warm while preparing eggs.

-----

6. Cut off the bottom 4 to 5 inches of each knee-high.

7. One at a time, place leaves, flowers, and stickers on the egg as desired. Some of the plant materials will stick better if you dip them in water first.

8. Place the toe of the knee-high on the top of your fingers and turn it inside out so that it covers your hand. Place the egg in your hand, and gently turn the hose right side out to cover the egg. Make sure your design is how you want it, and then pull the hose securely and tie into a knot on the back. Repeat with remaining eggs.

-----

9. Return dye to a gentle boil and stir in vinegar and/or cream of tartar.

10. Gently lower the eggs in the pan and boil for 20-30 minutes. Check the color of the eggs at 20 minutes. If not dark enough, boil until desired color is obtained (I boiled mine for 20 minutes).

11. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and place on rack to cool slightly.

12. Carefully cut hose and unwrap eggs. Discard any remaining plant materials or stickers.

13. Dampen a paper towel lightly with oil and buff eggs until shiny. Remove excess oil with clean paper towel.

14. Place eggs in your Easter basket!

Easter celebrations on Chios island, Greece, lights of Cesme, Turkey seen across the straits. Happy 4th of July to USAians. Wiki info:

Rouketopolemos (Greek Рουκετοπόλεμος, literally Rocket-War) is the name of a local traditional event held annually at Easter in the town of Vrontados (Βροντάδος) on the Greek island of Chios. As a variation of the Greek habit of throwing fireworks during the celebration of the service at midnight before Easter Sunday, two rival church congregations in the town perform a "Rocket War" by firing tens of thousands of home-made rockets across town, with the objective of hitting the bell tower of the church of the other side. The rockets are wooden sticks loaded with an explosive mixture containing gunpowder and launched from grooved platforms.

View of the rocket war

The two rival parishes are St. Mark's and Panaghia Ereithiani, the respective churches built on two hilltops about 400 meters away from each other. Direct hits on each belfry are supposedly counted on the next day to determine the winner, but each parish invariably claims victory over the other. The result of this apparent disagreement is that both parishes agree to settle the score next year, and the rivalry is thus perpetuated. The church buildings themselves and the nearby buildings have to be extensively boarded up and protected with metal sheets and mesh for the occasion. Several Vrontadites regularly express their dismay at the explosive nature of the custom, but it is a source of significant tourist revenue for the area.

The origin of this event is unclear, but local tradition holds that it goes back to the Ottoman era. According to local lore it was earlier performed with real cannons, until Ottoman authorities prohibited their use in 1889.

A group of six girls posing in a backyard on a bleak day in early spring. The following words in German are handwritten on reverse: "Ostern 1927, Lotte Reindl, Elsa Stein, Ilse Frank, Marga Sommer, Lotte Nehring, Luzia Krause" (Easter 1927 ...). I discovered this intriguing vintage photograph at a flea market in Stuttgart.

And where is Jesus, this strange Easter day?

Not lost in our locked churches, anymore

Than he was sealed in that dark sepulchre.

The locks are loosed; the stone is rolled away,

And he is up and risen, long before,

Alive, at large, and making his strong way

Into the world he gave his life to save,

No need to seek him in his empty grave.

He might have been a wafer in the hands

Of priests this day, or music from the lips

Of red-robed choristers, instead he slips

Away from church, shakes off our linen bands

To don his apron with a nurse: he grips

And lifts a stretcher, soothes with gentle hands

The frail flesh of the dying, gives them hope,

Breathes with the breathless, lends them strength to cope.

On Thursday we applauded, for he came

And served us in a thousand names and faces

Mopping our sickroom floors and catching traces

Of that corona which was death to him:

Good Friday happened in a thousand places

Where Jesus held the helpless, died with them

That they might share his Easter in their need,

Now they are risen with him, risen indeed.

Frohe Ostern - Happy Easter

My girlfriend's mother has been wanting me to build her something for a long time now. She is going to be getting this for her birthday in a few days (Easter Lilies are her favorite)

A very happy and peaceful Easter to everyone, especially dearest friends...Ben, Louis, June, Miguel, Mima, Spice, Joanne, Domi, Dominique, Rosita, Cristina, Julia,Christos, Eleonora, Harry, Omri, Mary, Graciela, Tahir, Nawal, Sissy, Senia, Serch, Jacob, Sir Gawins,

Rosa, Pepe, Brian, Mike, Johnny, Colin, Sarah-Louise, Dawn, Janet, Bushra, Jim, Sue, Andrei, Dmitriy, Maclas, Lucy, Jan, Mert, Gail.

Mom's Easter Lilies are in full bloom. I passed these all day today and wanted to take a photo of them but it was so windy. Taking the trash out tonight and now being still outside, I got my BBQ flash light and got this photo. I have photographed these lilies every year but never at night. These lilies bloom each year...the same 6 or so blooms in the same spot, right out the kitchen door on the patio. I think it's mom saying hi.

I dressed up my charming witch to bring this traditional Easter greeting out of my kitchen to the flickrworld.
