A friend's company had a company night for the Dynamo vs Galaxy game with free tickets, parking and Dynamo bucks. It was my first time watching a soccer game in person.
We stayed afterward to watch the beginning of a Gaelic football exhibition match, which was interesting to see.
There was a little flurry of interest yesterday on the dynamo I showed in my previous photo. This is the same dynamo shown when I purchased it along with the engine. The date the slide was processed was April 1982, so this photo was taken a little while before that.

Alimentation d’une dynamo de Gramme en mode moteur.
Cette alimentation prend du courant alternatif et génère du courant continu pour la dynamo.
An opportunity came up to help a friend who had a malfunctioning dynamo taillight on his hands. The story was that the standlight wasn't working. My guess was that the supercap might have been overstressed or possibly fatigued its leads. I asked him to see if he could open it up and take a few photos of the circuit board, just to get an idea of the damage or the cause of the failure. Also, it was a way to find out if it could even be opened up without destroying the light!
The photos showed three 0805 surface mount resistors that were quite brown and toasty, with some damage to the nearby portion of the circuit board. It didn't look too horrible. Seemed like it could be repaired, so I asked him to send it to me.
If you look closely, you can see that the resistors got hot enough to melt the rear half of the housing just a bit.
Ride was the 2014 Dirigo Dynamo ride from Somerville to Portland, but I DNF'd after the Portsmouth Brewery halfway stop due to a bad headache. Luckily there was a bailout option in the form of a 3am bus from Portsmouth to Boston.
The Dunwich Dynamo is a turn-up-and-go challenging free-entry overnight 120 mile bicycle ride on-tarmac from London Fields in Hackney, London to the lovely, lonely Suffolk beach at Dunwich. It’s not a race. It’s unsupported. There’s no van following. It’s a long way. I'm quietly terrified, especially as apart from my normal 10 mile each way commute I've neither had the time or opportunity to train for the event... and I've been ill over the last week.
The last 20 miles of the ride was hard work, there were many hills. I got too hot. Every hill was a mountain.
The final road leading to Dunwich beach was buzzing with inconsiderate motor traffic arriving for and departing with cyclists. It was irritating after having the road system all to ourselves for so long.
We arrive. It is 9:30am. No fanfare. No welcome. No attractive women handing us a bottle of something fizzy. The arrival almost seems an anti-climax. Others look like they have been here for hours - they probably have. The queue to load bikes into trucks already snakes its was round the car park and onto the beach.
We get ourselves into the Flora Tearooms and have a full English breakfast with orange juice.
The service is quick and the quality is good. We wolf it down.
HB-NX22 hub dynamo with Dlumotec Oval, bought in Drake's closing sale.
It was mounted on this fork for demonstration purposes. I'm not using the Shimano auto switch, it proved unreliable.
the braze-on at the rear of the seat tube is meant for a bottom bracket dynamo switch. I put the front derailleur lever on it, first because I didn't have a BB dynamo, and second because the down tube only has one cable stop for derailleur cables. It's a bizarre specimen.
The front derailleur is a suntour 'reverse' (I forget what they are called technically, but pulling the cable puts the chain on the small ring). And it's a top-pull so it works perfectly with this setup.
I've since installed a BB dynamo that has a lever attached to its body, so no need to relocate the FD lever. BB dynamo is less than ideal, so soon to be swapped for a front dyano-hub.

This headlight is powered by the hub dynamo in the front wheel. It's brighter than about 90% of the headlights you see running around Boulder at night. Mounted low down like this it does a good job of highlighting irregularities in the pavement, while not blinding oncoming traffic. It's also fairly well protected from inadvertant impacts in this position, by the stays for the front rack. Some forks have dedicated braze-ons for mounting a light. I had to improvize with a P-clamp and a piece of scrap aluminum. It's worked great though!
The light has a photodiode sensor in it, that turns it on automatically at dusk or when I enter a tunnel or underpass. It contains a large capacitor that stores several minutes worth of power, keeping me highly visible even while stopped at intersections or standing next to the road/path at night. And I never have to wonder if the battery is charged. It Just Works™. Most people wouldn't buy a car that didn't have headlights. I don't understand why we seem to think it's okay for bikes.
The amount of drag the dynohub adds to the bike is miniscule, even when the light is turned on. Far far less than the amount of energy that's lost on many bikes to overly knobby tires or unnecessary shocks.
Dynamo metro station located on Leningradsky Prospekt, and named after the nearby Dynamo Stadium. It was opened in 1938 as part of the Metro's second stage.
The station has two identical vestibules, each on the northern side of the Leningradskiy Avenue. Vestibules are designed by architect Chechulin. Two mirror image of the buildings in the ancient style, bordered by colonnade of round Corinthian columns.
More than enough fuel for the Dunwich Dynamo – a 120 mile cycle ride through the countryside tonight. I'm ready!

Where the Power Comes From
This is part of the drive system for the generator. A pulley would bolt over this wheel and a belt could provide power from a hydroelectric turbine or internal combustion engine, but I'm almost positive Boston Edison used steam engines in Station #1.

Welcome to Dynamo Pond, home to the first hydroelectric power plant in the Eastern Sierra, which supplied power for the mining camp at Bodie, now California's most famous ghost town. Built in 1892, it was the first test of the theory that electricity could be transmitted over a distance – until then power was always generated on-site. The hydroelectric power was successfully carried across wires for 13 miles to Bodie proving the theory. They installed the power lines in a straight line, as at the time it was feared the electricity would not be able to turn corners!

Neatens up the tube and means theres less chance for the circuit to be damaged when in use
