this is a really old picture. I was searching for pictures of my dog and found this. I had to upload to flickr.
Atlantic City, NJ, early 1900s. I don't have VMO's exact dates, but the 1850 census lists her age as 18, so that would make her a little over 70 here.
I started sewing and trying different things before the cotton was dyed.. blogged: viltalakim.com/blog/2011/08/viltalakim-shibori/
Ha! I am a microbiology nerd. I thought it looked kind of like we were lining up the slides after an excruciating (sp?) torture session, and the blood was blue. Nice, eh? Ah, the nerdiness...
This is out back, where the dyes are mixed and - I'm guessing as I missed this part - the waxed cloths are given a hot bath to melt the wax once they dry.
On a whimsy, I tried dying some samples of wool yarn. The dye bath at right is made of red onion skins and the other two are unsweetened Kool-Aid. I didn't realize I had to microwave the Kool-Aid dye baths to set them, but that's pretty easy to do next time, and the dye seemed to take really well without the additional heat. I had bright orange fingers all day from putting them into the fruity-smelling dye bath.
I went out and bought more Kool-Aid.
