The Mill began life as a cotton mill driven by water power through a 22ft diameter water wheel.
With the advent of bigger and better mills & machinery, cotton production became uncompetitive and so the mill was converted in 1810 to flax which was used for sails and sacking. Industrial expansion on the west coast and the ending of the Napoleonic wars brought the flax industry to its knees so the mill was converted once again in the 1820s to wool production.
Wool ceased to be a profitable commodity by the 1840s and production ceased.
The Mill, as a precursor to all of the late C20th industrial conversions, became a domestic property and some of the early Victorian wallpaper can still be seen.
By 1860 the Mill was once again converted – this time for use as a sawmill. The sawmill functioned until 1988 when it closed as a business. (gaylemill.org)

On this day two years ago we were in Banff Alberta . . . as were a zillion other touristos, we had driven from Golden and planned to stop for lunch in beautiful downtown Banff and maybe explore the streets but there was NO parking and the sidewalks were jammed with people packed cheek by jowl ( pre-Covid days :) We finally escaped to a back street and pulled over to check the map and plan our next move, and then we were blocked by two of these buses and had to wait for them to leave :)

If you were to ask me what has driven my progress in image editing the most over the past year, the answer would be clear: working in series. The concept isn’t new in photography, and there are different approaches to it. Personally, I’m especially interested in the spatial and visual relationships within a series. The spatial aspect is simple: the photos in a series are created in the same place. Here, for instance, in Iceland. The visual relationships, by contrast, have to be recognized or created by the photographer. That continues to challenge me to this day, and that is precisely where the power of the idea that drives me lies.
In my view, the effort is more than justified: through sequencing—anchored in place and aesthetics—you can tell a story that would be hardly possible with single images.
On Flickr, the idea of a series is hard to convey: I can upload the photos in the desired order, but I can no longer control their arrangement afterward. As a result, the aesthetics of the series and with them its idea are lost. Therefore, I will, going forward, upload the entire series as a single image after I have published all the individual images here. This way, I hope to better convey the visual idea of a series.

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters).
The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. The surrounding area is contained within the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of the preservation of the Grand Canyon area and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 to 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.
For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans, who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a holy site, and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.

Entirely within the state of Arizona, the park encompasses 278 miles (447 km) of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands. Located on the ancestral homelands of 11 present day Tribal Communities, Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world—a mile deep canyon unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers visitors from both north and south rims.

The Central European University (CEU) at its new location in Favoriten, the 10th district of Vienna. Teaching will start there in October.
"CEU is ranked as one of the world's top universities in social sciences.
[It] was founded in 1991 by hedge fund manager, political activist, and philanthropist George Soros." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_European_University
"Mr. Orban has long viewed the school as a bastion of liberalism, presenting a threat to his vision of creating an “illiberal democracy,” and his desire to shut it down was only deepened by its association with Mr. Soros, a philanthropist who was born in Hungary.
Mr. Orban has spent years demonizing Mr. Soros, a Jew who survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary, accusing him of seeking to destroy European civilization by promoting illegal immigration, and often tapping into anti-Semitic tropes." www.nytimes.com/2018/12/03/world/europe/soros-hungary-cen...
"The university was a casualty of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s turn toward authoritarianism, his development of a quietly repressive system that I’ve termed “soft fascism.” CEU, a university dedicated to liberal principles and founded by Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros, posed a threat to Orbán’s ideological project. So he put in place a set of characteristically sneaky regulations aimed at forcing out CEU without needing to formally ban them, eventually crushing the university’s ability to operate." www.vox.com/world/2018/12/4/18123754/hungary-ceu-orban-so...
Guin tests her shoulder, then hoists herself up on the bar, reaching over for the other glass and lifting it toward him. "You do know what I'm involved in, don't you?" she asks quietly. "The work I do?"
Charles leaned forwards to join the conspiritorial whispering, his eyes looking left to right and then he leaned closer and said in a low voice. "Choir practice?"
Guin just blinks at him for a moment, then starts to laugh. "Yup, that's right. Choir practice." She lifts her glass even higher, in a mock toast. "That's all I do... sing hymns."
Charles tilted his head to her. "Not all you do," he said with a wink and raised his glass joining in the toast and knocking the glass back. "An ya sing pretty.....people need thet..ain no small thang."

Reprocessed. On 1st May 2000, 37416 & 37411 blast their way off the Horseshoe Curve and climb up to County March summit, under the shadow of the impressive Ben Dorain. This was my first time on the West Highland line (what a mistake that was leaving it so late..) and I had little idea about locations, I had driven from Inverness after picking up a hire car, then driven via Fort William photting the sleeper and a charter at mundane spots I'd found, not knowing any better, then drove through the amazing Glen Coe valley, wow! I parked on the side of the A82 and had to wade across the river in the valley to reach this spot, I'm so glad I did as this shot has so much more power than the normal shots taken at County March from the roadside.

What a storm we had yesterday!! I was home the whole day and had no idea of what flooding and damage some people were experiencing. In my area, we only had heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Other places had massive hailstones that broke car windows and destroyed the siding on houses. Cars and other vehicles were floating on Deerfoot Trail and no doubt there was bad flooding in many other areas, too. Apparently, a tornado touched down for a couple of minutes in SE Calgary. In some areas, it looked like winter, with the ground white with hailstones. This is going to be a very costly storm!

The six photo I have posted this morning, 14 June 2020, are the last few taken on my drive north of the city three days ago. The photo above was taken on my way home, when I drove a couple of my 'usual' backroads just to check what birds were around. Practically nothing : ) You can always be sure, though, that there will be a Red-winged Blackbird.
Sunday, 14 June 2020: our temperature around noon is 17C (windchill 17C). Sunrise is at 5:20 am, and sunset is at 9:52 pm. Cloudy with some dark grey clouds forming.
My main purpose for going for a drive on 11 June 2020 was to find and photograph the old, faded barn seen in one of the photos I posted today. I had hoped to get up north of the city to see it last year, but it just didn't happen. Also, I had noticed that rain is forecast for many of the coming days, so I wanted to make the most of a sunny day.
A Great Gray Owl was a very unexpected sighting on this trip, and such a treat. I didn't notice it until I had just driven past it. Wondering if it might fly, I reversed the car very slowly, but, to my relief, it was still sitting on the fence post. After just a few minutes of turning its head to one side or another, it turned to look across the field of glorious Dandelions behind it. I don't know if it had a nest in the trees, but maybe it heard its mate or a young one calling. Whatever it was, it resulted in take-off.
Last year, 2019, I didn't see any Great Gray Owls. In March 2018, I had better luck. In 2017, I saw one on our May Species Count. 2016 was a great year for these owls. Various views in the years before 2016.
After taking a few photos of the barn (from the road), I continued my drive and, a short while later, got lost. It was while trying to find my way to some familiar road that I came across the owl. Sometimes, getting lost brings something wonderful, that you would have otherwise missed.

While in Cape Town, we hiked the five day Hoerikwaggo Trail from Table Mountain to Cape Point. These photos are from our day 3 which was walking from Orange Kloof near Constantia Nek to Hout Bay - then driven along Chapman Drive to Noordhoek for lunch. We then walked along Noordhoek Beach to Kommetjie and then to Slangkop Tented Camp near Slangkop Point Lighthouse.
The trail doesn't go all the way through so we were taken by car in a couple of sections as was our luggage, so we only carried day packs. We did a guided hike with AWOL Tours based in Cape Town.
There are very comfortable tented camps which have bedding and towels as well as fully equipped kitchens and excellent hot water showers.
Wildflowers along the trail were a real treat. Loved seeing proteas, geraniums, daisies and much more.

11 December .Glaciers, vast reserves of ice and snow found across the planet, are far more than frozen landscapes - they are lifelines for ecosystems and communities, holding around 70 percent of the world's freshwater.
Their accelerated melting represents not only an environmental crisis but also a humanitarian one, threatening agriculture, clean energy, water security and billions of peoples’ lives. Their retreat, driven by rising global temperatures, is a stark indicator of the climate crisis. Melting glaciers and thawing permafrost increase risks such as floods, glacier lake outburst floods, landslides or enhanced erosion and sediment, endangering downstream populations and critical infrastructure. The initial plunge strikes a ledge which directs the flow outward from the cliff resulting in a spectacularly messy waterfall (Note 1). Because of its separation from the cliff, cross winds have a big impact. I also did video, which shows that the heavy wind-driven mist (Note 2) is actually moving upward. Total height of falls is 384 meters (1260 feet).
