Driven to Tears - The Police
Lexington Lab Band version
www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKox6Y7QjdI
How can you say that your not responsible?
What does it have to do with me?
What is my reaction?
What should it be?
Confronted by this latest atrocity
Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Hide my face in my hands,
shame wells in my throat
My comfortable existence is reduced
To a shallow, meaningless party
Seems that when some innocents die
All we can offer them
is a page in a some magazine
Too many cam'ras and not enough food
Cause this is what we've seen
Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Driven to tears
Protest is futile
Nothing seems to get through
What's to become of our world?
Who knows what to do?
Driven to tears
Driven to tears

The staircase is relatively moderate in terms of the height of the steps and the distance between them.
I wanted to show a little boy that you can ride down there at a leisurely pace.
So I got on my bike at the top and had a firm grip on the brakes so that I didn't go too fast.
However, I had misjudged things a little, as the wheels didn't have any contact with the ground as I was going downhill, so I ended up going faster than I initially thought.
I had already seen myself falling, but just as I reached the bottom I was able to come to a halt without crashing my bike.
I was lucky.
Overconfidence is rarely good and can end quite badly with broken bones in old age.

Canon Beach, Oregon Coast. I've had dreams where I am trying to go somewhere, but each step is a great effort, as if I'm in slow motion. Fighting the force of the wind coming off the Pacific was like that this day, as I struggled, sometimes pushed backwards, to a bluff above the chaos. Looking straight out into the storm hurt my eyes. I ppositioned myself as a shield against the tripod, which was vibrating like a rubber band, and tried to shoot as fast as everything unfolding before me. The waves were urged forward with such speed that the next was upon the last as they hit the shore, and a great foam filled the shallows, while the mists trailing from the wave tops were uplifted in clouds that rose inland against the mountains that come down to the sea. Back on my bluff, forces collide...the forces that have driven the sea to such intensity, and the more sublime forces that have driven me here, forces I am powerless to resist. Risk drives me into danger, beauty stamps itself in my memory, adventure heightens my senses. And love--love always drives me, with a heart that is either confident or a heart that's broken, and just doesn't care. Sometimes I am so full of purpose that I lose perspective. And so I am driven, eventually, into oblivion.

We went to the Death Valley in California with the goal to experience the sailing stones on the Racetrack Playa at new moon. Before dark we scouted interesting stones on the playa and marked their GPS location. It was very windy at night, and we waited in the car for the wind to die down. It did not. I decided to go out on the playa in this condition; I found the rocks via GPS location. I used a dimmed-down warm-color LED floodlight to illuminate the black night. In addition I used a cold-color headlight from a low vantage point to illuminate the sailing stone.
Sailing stones are a geological phenomenon where rocks move and inscribe long tracks along a playa (dry lakebed) without human or animal intervention. Instead, rocks move when large ice sheets a few millimeters thick floating in an ephemeral winter pond start to break up during sunny days. These thin floating ice panels, frozen during cold winter nights, are driven by wind and shove rocks at up to 5 m/min across the muddy playa. More details.
I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from a RAW exposure, merged them selectively, and carefully pulled the curves.

The first lead workings in the Sheldon area of the Derbyshire Peak District date back to the mid C18th but following violence between the miners of the two adjacent mines in 1833 in which three men from Maypitt were brutally murdered, Magpie Mine remained closed until 1839 when the famous Cornish mine engineer John Taylor was called in to modernise and reopen the pit. He sank a new shaft to a depth of 650' and installed a Cornish pumping engine to counteract the constant flood water which threatened the workings. Even that proved incapable of dealing with the many streams and eventually in 1873 an underground sough was driven 1½ miles to the River Wye and today it still discharges between 4-6m imperial gallons a day!

By now it seemed I could go forever without sleep. Since yesterday morning at home, we’d driven from one side of the country to the other and found the only two empty chairs along the main concourse near the airport’s main entrance. Nothing was conducive to sleep, not the endless stream of arriving passengers, nor the bright lights in a space that was packed with humanity. And despite the long drive to get here, neither of us seemed able to nod off. The endless agitation of the man in the chair on our right did nothing to help, and of course we were both clinging to bags loaded with camera equipment that had taken years of hard work to accumulate. When we boarded the flight for Keflavik at some obscene hour of the morning it was as if we were in a daze. But surely, we’d find some sleep on the plane? I managed an hour at most.
Some time later we were on the roads around the perimeter of Reykjavik, and then heading north towards Snaefellsnes, lost in awe at how imposing the landscape is. Tufts of cloud hung halfway up the near vertical slopes of huge green fingers of high ground that spread from the earth across fjords and towards the sea. The bright ribbon of road sparkled in sunlight as it snaked around the edge of the land, a narrow corridor between the mountains and the sea. There’s just something about the colours and shapes of the land that draw you in and try to steal your attention as you drive. And we hadn’t even got to the good bits yet. After an hour or so we arrived at Borganes, the Bonus supermarket and the café I’d bought a coffee from last time we were here three years earlier. Traditions can evolve from the most mundane of activities sometimes.
After a couple of hours, more or less on time we drove over the narrow causeway across the last fjord towards the small fishing port of Grundarfjordur on the north coast of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, stopping at the viewpoint over the sound to take a few handheld snaps. Inland, clouds hung heavy in cumulus form, racing on the wind across the mountain tops of the interior. But out to sea they were altogether different, smooth edged and cigar shaped, like thousands of strange alien craft that had arrived at the same time as us and were making their way towards a meeting point. Textures that would later make the sky rival a certain location for attention when we pointed our cameras towards it.
We were the first of the new arrivals to an empty hostel, checking into our room with another cup of coffee and hastily assembled ham and tomato deli wraps to celebrate getting there in one piece. Of course, coffee doesn’t go hand in hand with sleep, and nor does the adrenalin generated by the excitement of being in a landscape photographer’s dreamland. And we were only five minutes from the main attraction. Five minutes from Kirkjufell, which dominated the scene from the picture window in our room. We could come here every day if we wanted. Twice a day, three times a day – time couldn’t stop us. In 2019 we only managed the classic shot – a sub standard canvas sits on my wall recording the event – but this time it feels like we observed it from every conceivable angle. Well, every conceivable angle except for the one further up the valley I read about in a book called “Photographing Iceland” that seemed to involve trespassing that is. Amazing how different it looks from each position. From here, the Hogwarts Sorting Hat forever jumps into my imagination.
We’d started on the west side along the empty road behind the marshes. I haven’t shared a shot from there yet, but I’m bound to at some point – it’s only a matter of time. An hour there revealed something different that most of the people a mile away wouldn’t see that day. Watch this space. Then we thought about the obvious view. The one everyone knows. My obsessive planning had already warned us about the new car park that charges visitors one thousand krona to stop at the most well known viewpoint, and for the hard of spending this presented a challenge. But challenges can be overcome you know, and a rough pull in was soon identified at which we ourselves pulled in and made across the bridge for the waterfall view, passing the busy new facility with its number plate recognition cameras and pay machines. Iceland costs enough without throwing bad money after good. Judging by the number of vehicles parked in there, the owners would probably have enough for a luxury holiday in Cornwall by next Thursday.
“That’s a great hat!”
“Thank you”
“Where did you buy it. Over here?”
“No, eBay,” I smiled in return to the young German man. One of the few non photographers among the masses, he seemed to like my bright blue and orange hat, supplied by a well known manufacturer of outdoor clothing and equipment. I returned to the view in front of me. The Great Sorting Hat of Snaefellsnes in all its glory. If you zoom in a bit, you can even see a watchful eye halfway up that all so familiar slope.
The waterfall area was far busier than it had been three years earlier. Mind you, last time we were here it was under the midnight sun. There were still a handful of people here when I thoughtlessly threw on the ten stop filter and lost all definition in the famous waterfalls then, but now the place was chock full of humanity. In fact, I had to wait my turn to line up my shot, this time choosing the slightly less familiar lower falls to share with this story. I hoped my choice of a six stop filter and a speed of a little under a second might deliver something more pleasing. And even though the hour wasn’t golden or blue, those strange cigar shapes in the sky that had gathered here like old friends gave the rugged green landscape an unworldly atmosphere. For a moment I ignored the crowds gathered behind me and pretended I was the only person here. Just me, a sky full of visitors and a giant sorting hat in this remote corner of Europe. Maybe sleep deprivation was starting to kick in after all.

Having driven from Southampton to Bournemouth specifically to photograph a forecast storm, I was disappointed to find that the Pier was shrouded in a hazy drizzle, with little sign of the storm or any lighting. After a brief walk on the beach and a quick but equally disappointing sunset shoot in nearby Poole, we retired to the pub for a beer. At this point, there was nothing on the rain radar or lightning maps to indicate that anything special was, quite literally, on the horizon. When we left the pub 45 minutes later there were already multiple flashes in the sky and boy were we in for a Storm. Apparently over 200,000 lightning strikes were recorded over the south of England between 10:00 PM and 4:00 AM. Without doubt, the most electrifying storm I’ve ever experienced.

My whole life feels like this now.
I feel driven by my dreams, driven by an overflowing love.
I never felt that confident before. It's a feeling that can keep me warm in the most unknown and cold places.
I could go everywhere. I'm not afraid anymore.
There are so many things to discover together.
Life and its adventures are ahead.
With you.
This is my last picture before a few days, maybe a few weeks.
On Tuesday, the 11th of November, I take the plane which will lead me to my new life in Finland, with him.
New city, new country, new language... and it already feels home.
Home is where your heart is.
See you soon xxx
With love,

Anyone who has driven on I 26 near the Asheville airport exit has probably seen the large planting of sunflowers and wildflowers. If you park at the rest stop, it is a short walk to the flowers. I spent almost 2 hours there and got so many great shots. More to come.
Thanks so much for looking.
Comments are so appreciated.

I have driven past this barn many, many times (mostly for work) and never realized it was a 'Rock City' barn. It actually is double sided with writing on both roofs (stay tuned for the other side). I also believe that this barn has been added on to since the lettering on the roof (what is left of it) stops several feet short of the rear of the barn. If fact, it barely gets across the middle of the barn and this is not what most of these look like. This view is as you pass the barn driving east on TN-30 toward Spencer, Tennessee. As you can see, it is very close to the road as you drive past but you still have to look closely to see the text on the tin roof.
Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Zak and I Went out and took photos from 1-9 today, and i have so many photos im excited to share with all you! So i think i might be starting ANOTHER blog but this time actually keeping up with it so you can see other outtakes of various different shoots i will be doing this whole year while trying to keep up with the project.

"In the 1970s, canola was created through traditional plant cross-breeding by removing two things found in the rapeseed plant: glucosinolates and erucic acid. Erucic acid was removed because it was believed to be inedible or toxic in high doses. The newly developed plant was renamed "canola" – a combination of "Canadian" and "Oil" (or ola) to make this difference apparent." From the link below.

I absolutely love the time of year when the fields turn bright yellow with the Canola flowers. The day before yesterday was the first day I had been out when I saw any fields with the crop fully in bloom. I have to admit that I don't like the smell of Canola, but the colour is so spectacular and pretty. In this shot, the sky is beginning to darken, ready to rain a little later.
These two old, wooden barns were part of a CPR Demonstration Farm. I have added a previously posted photo in a comment box below, showing the whole farm.
"The home, the barn, everything seen in this yard once served a rather unique and special purpose. Operating as a fully functioning “demonstration farm”, near Vulcan Alberta, and tied to the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was a show piece of sorts a century ago, promoting the region’s agricultural potential. Prospective settlers would be told where to acquire land and of course similar farm buildings, what crops to grow and how to do it efficiently, what equipment to purchase, what techniques to use and so on.
The CPR had a vested interest, of course, in the success of this endeavour. They’d profit both on the sale of these kit farms and then again, many-fold, on the resultant business brought to the railway through the moving of inbound materials needed by all those new settlers; and outbound agricultural products the area would produce. And the transporting of people in and out, all the stuff needed for new towns that would spring up, and any industry established there, they too all moved by railway. It was win-win for the CPR!" The day before yesterday, 1 July 2017, was a great day, spent with friend, Pam. I picked her up just after 8:00 am and did a long drive in Southern Alberta. We saw our target bird - a Common Nighthawk, and all sorts of other things including plants and old barns. It took a round trip of 414 km to get the Nighthawks, but it was so worth it! Much further than I normally drive. Towards the end of our day, the rain arrived, accompanied by lightning streaks. This couldn't have been timed more perfectly, to wash off a lot of the dust that covered my car after 12 hours of driving hot, dusty roads! So welcome! We have another hot day today and the forecast is for very hot days for at least the next week. So far, the forecast is 33C for Friday, 35C for Saturday and 31C for Sunday.
It was such a thrill to see a Common Nighthawk / Chordeiles minor (a rather strange looking bird), as I had always wanted to see one actually lying on a fence post or wooden railing. People get such amazing photos of them like that, and that is what I was determined to find this summer. Last year, I had driven to this area in Southern Alberta, hoping to find one, but had been out of luck. Though I ended up with the one in the photo I posted yesterday, lying on a hard, metal railing that lacked character, I'm still happy as can be. Not only did friend Pam and I see this one, but there were three other Nighthawks there, too. Two of the others were also on a metal rail, but the fourth was on a fence post - not the best angle, but it was still nice to see a fence post perch. How close we came to missing them. I said I wanted to just check the first part of a small side road first, before continuing on the road we were on - and there they were! I had seen a nighthawk on maybe five different occasions over the years, but most were in flight and one was perched very high up in a tree. For Pam, this was the first time she had ever seen one, and she was so happy to see this lifer.
"On warm summer evenings, Common Nighthawks roam the skies over treetops, grasslands, and cities. Their sharp, electric peent call is often the first clue they’re overhead. In the dim half-light, these long-winged birds fly in graceful loops, flashing white patches out past the bend of each wing as they chase insects. These fairly common but declining birds make no nest. Their young are so well camouflaged that they’re hard to find, and even the adults seem to vanish as soon as they land." From AllABoutBirds.
www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Common_Nighthawk/id
I was so tired after driving such a long distance and it was a hot day - the temperature got up to 30C. I so rarely do such a long drive, and I've barely driven all winter and spring. It felt so good to actually get out on a long drive like this, and we saw all sorts of interesting things that we just had to stop and photograph - of course!
Every single time I go out with my camera for a drive, I never forget to be SO thankful to live in a country where I have the freedom and safety to go where I want, and to see such beauty. Thank you, Alberta and Albertans - and Happy 150th Birthday, Canada! Such a young country.
When storm-driven tides and a full moon brought this morning’s escapade to Holgate to a screeching halt, it seemed that opportunity might be waning. A tip from a good friend, however, led to a screech of a different persuasion. Rather than a halt of all activities we managed to have quite a hoot, enjoying the company of this little owl. Once spotted by local chickadees, however, a bird alert went out and a trove of songbirds chased this Eastern Screech Owl deep into its wooden lair for the remainder of the morning. #EasternScreechOwl
I had driven up the hill to use the VHF and Short wave radios in my car for an evening, when I saw this sun ray in the valley below, the great shame is I did not have my camera's with me only my phone :-(
Titterstone Clee Hill ,s a well know high spot for amateur radio use due to it's height and remoteness from interference found in all modern built up area's.
Single bare bulb strobe off right shoulder slightly behind her. There is a white wall 2 feet to her left providing some fill light.
I've driven by Kelley's Kountry Kafe a number of times on our way up to Mt. Rainier. Never stopped to eat or for photos, but with the sun setting and the sky a beautiful milky palette, I made a pit stop.
Place may not look like much, but it gets rave reviews for it old school style burger. One guy saying it, "took him back 20 years....that it was hot, juicy, fresh, and big". Who could ask for more? Going to have to pin this spot for a post hike meal.

From reckless corporate consolidation of the media industry, the Presidential persecution of whistle blowers to the targeting of independent wartime journalists by our military, our system has completely failed us. The continuous stream of sensationalism feeds our addiction to drama, hyperstimulating the senses with fear and novelty. The war drums beat to the tune of our racing hearts – which rage with fury over manipulated messages driven by those in power.
Personally, my advise would be to shut off the TVs – which drive us away from the essence of a meaningful existence. Ignore all mainstream messages – they are rooted in profit. Focus our thoughts and hearts to kindness, forgiveness and tolerance. The Fourth Estate will burn on its own.

One of the primary new techniques (for me) used in this build was the implementation of Lego nets (71155) for sculpting. By backing each net with smaller plates – set apart by 1 stud – and then using 1x1 round plate pips on the front side (sandwiching the net in between), I had a flexible scrim which I could then build off of. This allowed for the undulating forms in the explosion area.
