Macquarie Group owned, Direct Rail Services operated, General Motors/EMD JT42CWR Class 66 66302 diesel-electric locomotive stands in the wash plant at Carlisle Kingmoor Diesel depot during the 20th anniversary open day.
Currently one of two of the heaviest freights that traverse the East Lancasjhire Line is 6C89 Mountsorrell -Carlisle conveying around 1800 tonnes of Granite Limestone, this usually runs 2-3 days a week. Seen here passing Taylor St. The other heavy freight being 6S94 Wembley-Irvine China Clay Slurry Tanks which runs on an 'Had Hoc' basis and is sometimes routed via West Coast Main Line.

A real mixed bag including MPV 98912/962 with ballast and spoil wagons behind. On hire from DB No 66108 is in charge of 6K05 Carlisle-Crewe Basford Hall Departmental service.
Not quite sure why two 'DREDs' were rostered on this working, maybe it was a heavier load, as they do struggle a bit over Aisgill. Anyway, I wasn't complaining as it was something different.

I love Drew's tattoo & although I am a sucker for B&W's I had to do one in colour to a) show off the amazing colours of the tattoo & b) show off how handsome and wonderful my boyfriend is!
I have been messaged a lot recently about my Facebook page, so here it is; www.facebook.com/pages/Emily-Cromarty-Photography/1063795...

Dred Scott first went to trial to sue for his freedom in 1847 [at the Old Courthouse in St. Louis].
Ten years later, after a decade of appeals and court reversals, his case was finally brought before the United States Supreme Court.
In what is perhaps the most infamous case in its history, the court decided that all people of African ancestry -- slaves as well as those who were free -- could never become citizens of the United States and therefore could not sue in federal court.
The court also ruled that the federal government did not have the power to prohibit slavery in its territories. Scott, needless to say, remained a slave....
The decision of the court was read in March of 1857. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney -- a staunch supporter of slavery -- wrote the "majority opinion" for the court. It stated that because Scott was black, he was not a citizen and therefore had no right to sue.
The decision also declared the Missouri Compromise of 1820, legislation which restricted slavery in certain territories, unconstitutional.
While the decision was well-received by slaveholders in the South, many northerners were outraged. The decision greatly influenced the nomination of Abraham Lincoln to the Republican Party and his subsequent election, which in turn led to the South's secession from the Union.
Peter Blow's [Scott's first "master"'s] sons, childhood friends of Scott, had helped pay Scott's legal fees through the years. After the Supreme Court's decision, the former master's sons purchased Scott and his wife and set them free.
Dred Scott died nine months later.

In front of the Old St.Louis Courthouse where the Dred Scott case was first brought to trial. The case went to the US Supreme Court which ruled Scott was not a man, but a piece of property, and had no rights under the Constitution. The fallout from this decision is often cited as the start of the US Civil War.

66427 & 66431 approach Brock Crossing with 4S43 06:16 Daventry to Mossend "Tesco Express". 20/4/2016. It was good to see DRS 66s with the "Small logo" livery, which I far prefer to the large "Compass" one.
The site of the "Dred Scott Trial," the Old Court House in St. Louis, is where Dred & Harriet Scott won their citizenship. The US Supreme Court reversed the decision, precipitating the Civil War, and the nation has yet to fully recover. Also the site of 2nd-oldest MLK march in the U.S.

66753 T&T with 66786 pass through Dundee Central Junction & on to the Tay Bridge working 6K25 Laurencekirk to Millerhill engineers. 21/3/2021
We visited the historic Thebes Courthouse and saw the Thebes railroad bridge. Abraham Lincoln is said to have practiced law here and Dred Scott (a slave) was held in the dungeons. The town was also mentioned in the movie Showboat.
Quite some time since a pair of 'Dreds' took charge of a nuclear move in these parts but nevertheless makes a change from the usual pair of Class 68's.
DRS 66423 with newly named fleet companion 66425 'Nigel J. Kirchstein' are seen heading through Besford with the 6M63 Bridgwater - Crewe CS with a consist of two loaded FNA's.
66431 climbs through Smardale with a very lengthy 6K05 12:18 Carlisle to Crewe BH. 7/8/2013. DRS had just taken over 6K05 at the time.
Having been languishing at York for a few months it was good to see 66433 back in more familiar territory. Seen here with a right raft on the drawhook what looked like brand new ballast working 12.30 departure Carlisle North Yard-Crewe Basford Hall Departmental service.
66303 passes Milepost 260 at Ais Gill with 6K05 12:46 Carlisle North Yard to Crewe Basford Hall engineers. 24/9/2014.
66429 coasts down the Ribble Valley at Great Dudland with 6K05 12:46 Carlisle Yard to Crewe Basford Hall engineers. 3/2/2015. The loco had apparently failed somewhere north of my position and the driver was presumably coasting to where he could be rescued. I was hoping to photograph the Logs here, but the light failed shortly after I took this picture and in any event the Logs weren't going anywhere past Hellifield until this "failure" had cleared the section.
