LMS Jubilee class 5690 Leander approaches Rothley station at the Great Central railway during the winter 2010 steam gala. Leander was working a Loughborough-Leicester north service.
I knew it would happen sooner or later, I just sort of hoped it would go for at least a year before someone ran into the nice Thule Doubletrack bike rack that I have sticking off the back of my car. But, on Penn avenue, in heavy traffic, some kid driving a company truck let his mind wander and ran into me.
Man, he was scared. He said he didn't have any money to cover the damage and I said "That's why people have insurance." He said it was his boss's vehicle and I said "That's why companies have insurance". He couldn't find the insurance card and got more and more wound up. He didn't want his boss to find out.
We made a deal, though. I got his boss's information and said that I would go to the bike shop and see how much it would cost to repair and he would send that to me. If he did not, then I would call his boss for the insurance information (and all that implies).
It took a week to get word from the bike shop. $92, a third the cost of the entire rack.
This is a cropped version of the second photo. I wanted to include the stone wall in the other photo, but this looks great cropped like this. NS train 30T, November 17, 2015, Yatesville, PA.

started at glen doll car park - up to the top of the glen and and down corrie chash to loch muick. the hike-a-bike up from glas-alt-shiel to the waterfall could be swapped for a long ride along the loch side and up the doubletrack. nice singletrack from lochnagar to glen callater where we stayed at the bothy. along the side of loch callater was really nice but then it just turned into a bog! however the track from the top of crow craigies to glen doll was amazing :-) rocky singletrack that went on for ages with plenty of tricky bits :-) definitely have to go back and ride that bit again ... just not sure if i can handle all the hike-a-bike to get there!
Waking up, my legs were argumentative and threatening to cramp on me but the hourly weather report suggested I get my ass out the door and get on trail. Im glad I did as it turned out to be one of the best days I've spent on the bike in years. This was only my second ride on these trails this season, but the conditions were perfect for a few hours. Temps would be trail favorable until about 11 when the crust would turn to mush and I'd be rutting trails so I avoided that. And by the looks of the 7 day forecast, I wont have this opportunity again until next year. Somewhere under the snow in the back yard I have a few canoe's... I'm coming for ya's!
Some business in Fountain City today afforded me the chance to check in on the St. Croix Sub. I knew there was an eastbounder parked at Mears waiting on a turn to cross the Chippewa River so I set up at Nelson. In the meantime this Z-train came roaring up the westbound track. The atmosphere and dust helped add some drama to what I thought was going to be a throw away shot. October 27, 2012.

The third unit looked great and so too would have the lashup reversed. Despite that it's nice to see a warbonnet and an SD60M hard at work with nearly all their original markings intact. We finally had the light and the train in our favor. After this it was back to Marquette as the ICE headed west, we'd be gone much of the day, but we'd be back...

Alta Via del Sale. In torrential downpour. For the whole day from 9 am to nightfall.
It was Alps Divide Day two for me. This weather was forecasted, but the extend and intensity was extraordinary. And it’s not me saying this. This came from quite a lot of very experienced people. Even people living in the UK and in Scotland and who have participated in events like Silkroad Mountain Race. E.g. both @Jennytough and @nielcopeland said this rain had broken the scale.
And wow - I literally rode through rivers running across the trails. At times just one side, at times on both sides. And it was chunky. As usual, the photos don’t do the real roughness of the surface justice. It was no mellow riding. It wouldn’t have even on good gravel surface as I did 3.400 meters of climbing on that day. But indeed it was a constant search for rideable lines over the chunky trails. Right through the middle of the streams running down the trails or next to it.
As long as I was moving and moving upwards the temperature weren’t that much of a problem. But for the descending parts the wet body had few reserves. Still not at the halfway mark, after quite a bit of a descending part and still 20 km from the next rifugio (i.e. more than 2 hours away) I was shivering so hard once stopped. Luckily I found a small opportunity to pull out my puffy jacket under a bit of shelter and put in on under my rain jacket. It took a while to stop shivering after staring to move again, but I finally could comfortably „swim“ all the rest of the Via Sale. It took me until well after dusk, when the rain finally subsided a little above Tende but gave way to dense and wet fog.
This was quite the experience.
