Two 'L' trains pass at dusk over Wabash Avenue in Chicago's Loop. Ridership on the 'L' system, having been down by 80% during the pandemic, is starting to slowly pick up again now that the city has moved to Phase 4 of its reopening plan. Thanks for viewing! Take good care, friends, and travel safely on life's journey.

Steam loco 52 8079 was used for a two day photo special on both the Ostbahn as well as on the line between Eberswalde and Frankfurt (Oder). On the first day there still was some snow left, but on the second day it started raining and the snow melted rapidly.

A typical day of railfanning the C&NW... chase an eastbound in low winter light for 50 miles, get to the top of Arcadia Hill, shoot a couple of westbounds, find one you like, and chase him back to Mo Valley. Simpler times...

In the 1970's Union Pacific would add CCS leaders to C&NW trains at Fremont. The story I heard somewhere at work was shortly after the C&NW GP50's were delivered they were equipped with UP CCS components from retired/stored UP DD40's. So these GP50's were a common sight on Overland Route trains east of North Platte thru the early 1990's until being bumped by UP Dash 8's and SD60/60M deliveries that were dual equipped with CCS and ATC. I never got tired of shooting GP50's as the MoPac fleet was a daily sight when I was in Texarkana.

Deep in the Selkirk Mountains, heavy flock coats the trees as the darkness slowly lifts at Ross Peak finding CPKC train 105 drifting downgrade from Rogers Pass through the freshly falling snow.

The train has just exited the 9.1 mile Mount MacDonald Tunnel, built to ease westbound traffic through Rogers Pass, which significantly reduces the grade for them, while the Connaught Tunnel handles the eastbound traffic. The doubletrack segments on the west side of the pass are named after their respective tunnels, signal 900M here being the MacDonald track and 900C the Connaught track.

As seen at Rainford Junction Station. The train in view has just left Kirkby and it's on its way to Wilton Power Station in Yorkshire with a full load of Merseyside's domestic waste for incineration. The waste fuels the power station. The loco is a Class 66 No. 66 079.

CN 8016 leads another of it's SD70M-2 kin down the 1.9% grade of Steelton Hill, between Nopeming Junction, and Steelton, MN, on CN's Superior Subdivision. This line was part of a large doubletrack and line revision project in 2015.

A recent work trip to the mid western United States gave me an opportunity to visit an area that I had never been, but have been keeping an eye on from afar for several years.

The Iron Range of Minnesota is home to some fascinating rail and shipping operations, featuring a the rail to ship 'conveyor belt' of taconite iron pellets being transported from the mines in the region to several ports on the north shore of Lake Superior, for forwarding to steel mills further east. Ever since CN purchased Great Lakes Transportation in 2004, including its rail properties, the Bessemer & Lake Erie, and Duluth Missabe & Iron Range, the area has become a haven for older second, and now third generation locomotives, toiling away likely the last years of their careers on a class 1 railway.

Due to work timing constraints, I only ended up with only a few scant hours in the region over two days, but I was determined to make the most of the that time shooting (hopefully) the 'older' power that I fondly remember plying the mainlines of North America in my youth.

The potential bonus of the timing of the trip was the potential for catching fall colours on the trees in the area. When researching the lines it became apparent right away that most of the photographic angles would have a very similar theme between them. Lineside shots, with the trains hemmed in by the deciduous forest, or shots from the numerous road overpasses. While the focus of my efforts would be documenting the last days of the locomotives, it would be a big bonus to have some colour on the trees to add interest to the potentially monotonous angles.

Unfortunately, unseasonably high temperatures delayed most of the trees from beginning the change in their leaves colours. Despite my best hopes, the timing of my trip was about a week or two too soon. In a weeks time, the trees would put on their show in proper, but that would be well after I had returned to the rainy northwest.

At just 3 months old, UP 8957 is looking pretty sharp on the point of this frac sand train headed through southwest Houston. The train will be taking the Sunset Route to San Antonio to help feed the Eagle Ford shale region's big appetite for sand during the fracking boom of the early 2010's.

Also of note, a reactivated 90MAC is trailing 4th out in this consist.

Union Pacific train ZLCG2 passes a stopped WB train in Omaha. The UP6706 is the last patched operating C&NW unit on UP's roster. The 30 year old units original paint is faded and the patch to cover the number on the right side of the carbody is worn off so the original C&NW 8804 number is now visible again on this AC44CW. An interesting comparison to the freshly outshopped GE rebuild on the left, which happens to be originally C&NW 8718, a C44-9W now rebuilt as an AC4400CWM.

Now that I'm up to date and thinking of spring it's back to the archives. Spring 25 years ago at Prescott, IA. DENGAL is making a morning run across southwest Iowa on the old CB&Q. The H-1 Dash 9 still counted as "new" power then, ably assisted by ATSF 337, a GP60B. Visiting again with Streetview from my desk chair reveals that the old overpass remains to provide a viewpoint but other significant changes are evident.

Most evident is the absence of the Q-era signal bridge spanning the tracks. Gone too are the code line poles. Rather than opening up the view it seems this has allowed the trees to creep closer to the tracks. Even the "skyline" of Prescott itself looks a little different these days. The old water tower has been removed and replaced by a new, taller version farther from the town center. April 11, 1998.

Well outfitted Jeep is about the only way up here.

ANPRA makes the run across the north side of Milwaukee as it closes in on Butler Yard. Sometimes you get wrapped up in a chase and think afterwards, that was probably overkill. Not the case here. I chased this one from FDL to Butler with as many sets as possible in between. It was a great day, one of the best. December 16, 1995.

The air temperature is zero degrees and falling after sunset as the afternoon light quickly fades away on the St. Croix sub. The westbound main has been blocked for over two hours by this empty oil train after the lead unit (CSX 137) lost all of its water and had to be shut down. A relief crew aboard a single replacement locomotive has been sent from LaCrosse yard to rescue the train and complete the trip to Northtown.

Visible in the distance are the block signals for the new high speed crossover installation at C.P. 3396. The tail lights on the road at left belong to a BNSF service truck and a taxi which has just arrived to pick up the crew.
