The Ascent of Rum Doodle is a short 1956 novel by W. E. Bowman (1911-1985). It is a parody of the non-fictional chronicles of mountaineering expeditions (notably Maurice Herzog's book Annapurna chronicling the first ascent of Mt. Annapurna in Nepal) that were popular during the 1950s, as many of the world's highest peaks were climbed for the first time. A new edition was released in 2001 with an introduction by the contemporary humorist Bill Bryson. It has been critically well received. Though a parody, it has become one of the most famous and celebrated books of mountaineering literature.
The book has been republished several times since 1956. The current edition is published by Pimlico, an imprint of Random House.
A bar and restaurant in Kathmandu, called Rum Doodle and decorated with pictures from the book, has become a popular staging point for expeditions to Mt. Everest. Many expeditions are given large wooden footprints to sign which are then nailed to the wall, ceilings and even the bar. The wall bears signatures from many famous mountaineers, including Sir Edmund Hillary, Reinhold Messner, Ed Viesturs, Rob Hall, and many Sherpas, including Ang Rita.
Make postcards and draw some doodle gifts for my friends
I am soooo happy and relax when i doing this.٩(๑`^´๑)۶
Zen doodle on rolodex card. Started it in church while we waited for votes to get counted and sang hymns (this is why I threw some hymn titles in there!) THis is the back of the card...
This was a crop from the same picture. I don't know who did that doodle. Probably me. I'm known for odd little designs...
delightfully creepy! ;~)) and title inspired by TheNewJane below! I originally called it "Doodle Monster Blues"
Doodling fun - I was inspired by ladies at Ascot with their outlandish creations and couldn't resist trying out my own! I used leftover silk paint for blobs to blow with a straw, then added some acrylic to the big flowers so they showed up over her hair. As I flicked through magazines looking for the perfect 'model' she really stood out to me!
I've been enjoying learning to doodle and sketchnote lately. Yesterday was a full migraine day, but I was able to do a page of practice. If you think the top left bicycle (the first one) looks like a 5yo (or 3yo) drew it, so do I :-)
It's amazing to me how my brain works. I've literally ridden thousands of miles on bicycles, and I own four of my own and the family has another half-dozen more. But to recall exactly how a frame and wheels relate to each other, that's a hard task! And then to flip the orientation of it, that's a brain basher also.
"Draw something fifty times and you own it." - one of the artists in the Sketchnote Handbook. Certainly I feel that I own this enough to make it recognizable now.
Just some recent doodles! Can find my post about it here: littlepinkcactus.blogspot.com.au/2014/05/drawings-kitty.html

Most of the doodles and scribbles in this set are from the quick-fire drawings that I make as part of my new Bedtime Drawing Regime, where I try and knock out as many sketches as I can in as short an amount of time as possible - just before I head off to sleep. I normally make between 5 and 10 drawings then turn in for the night. I find that the most interesting results come from just putting pen to paper and going for it without really thinking about what I'm about to draw. Some of them turn out quite well - others not so...
