I put the eyes and eyebrows on the last doll in the truck on the way to their house. I was glad I had some doll shirts that fit them, because I didn't have time to make any. The shoes turned out really cute, but I didn't get a photo. This Ever After High-style doll maker is free on dolldivine.com , but I just went ahead and bought the 99ยข app version so I could always have it on my phone for when Iโm feeling bored and princessy. ๐
My all-time favorite fairy tale is โEast of the Sun and West of the Moonโ*, so I decided to make an EAH-style โDaughter of the White Bearโ. She should probably have more fur incorporated into her outfit, but ehhh! Itโs a good first try. The gold and silver in her dress and makeup represent the sun and moon, so I did put a *little* bit of thought into this, at least.
(By the way, if youโre a fan of the Jim Henson show โThe Storytellerโ, like I am, you may be interested to know that elements of โEast of the Sun and West of the Moonโ were recycled into the episodes โHans my Hedgehogโ and โThe True Brideโ. They didnโt use the bit about the troll woman with a nose three ells long, though. Which is a shame, if you ask me.)
*The best book version of which is the one illustrated by P. J. Lynch. Trust me on this.

Putting aside the legal issues (the law is different everywhere) and the financial troubles recasting causes (it seems impossible to change an entitled mind), think of the artists behind these dolls we love so much. Think about how much the artists love their creations. While it's amazing that they can make money doing something they love, I believe that most dollmakers don't do it for the money. Because there's not a lot of money in being an artist.
Artists create because they love creating. Think about all the characters you've made for your dolls and how you love to style them. Doll makers get to do that from scratch. They get to make the faces that they have seen in their dreams and make them become reality.
For a lot of doll makers, it's still a very personal experience. This is certainly true for the small European artists, but also for a lot of the 'bigger' companies. Most of these bigger companies run on about 5-7 people by the way.
When Doll Chateau started to get recasted I genuinely got angry. Why? Because to me it is so obvious that their sculptor absolutely loves what he/she does. They love trying new things and aren't afraid to push the boundaries.
What angers me most about the whole recast issue is that when you buy a recast, you decide to support some asshole who has done absolutely nothing for the money he earns. He doesn't put hours and hours of work into the dolls he sells. He doesn't put blood sweat and tears in them. No, he buys them or people send them to him and he just makes molds of the parts. Though I doubt he even does that.
It just angers me so much that people would support such a person instead of the artist that created the doll in the first place.
It's honestly heartbreaking.
