As NASA astronaut Ron Garan climbed through the hatch on the International Space Station to begin a 6.5 hour spacewalk on July 12, 2011, he looked down and saw this:
The southern tip of Florida under the tail with Lake Okeechobee clearly standing out. To the right, the Bahamas with Grand Bahama (center) and Great Abaco (top right). Below them, the Berry Islands and towards the bottom Andros Island. Along the latter’s east coast the famous "Tongue of the Ocean“, a deep sea trench of that characteristic shape. At the upper end of the Tongue, New Providence Island with the Bahamas‘ capital Nassau. To the right Eleuthera Island.

so as it was a rather nice Summers evening I decided to take a walk around to my dad's place.
was a pleasant stroll, not too fast. I took a couple of selfies that I thought just showed the guy I am. it's all about the light.
I took the long way through his village past two pubs we drank in and the corner shop. then past the house we I lived in once upon a time.
as I got closer to his house, a strange thing happened.
a door to a house on the other side of the road to me opened, and an older lady said something to me in an American accent.
thinking she wanted a hand with something I said "pardon," so typically English anyway she said something like this.
" I saw you from my kitchen window and just had to come and say how beautiful you look."
of course, I said thank you in a very embarrassed way. and she then said, " we have to stick together. we don't tell each other we look nice enough"
we had a little chat a few words, and off I went back on my little journey.
she made my day if not my month, but I ain't that much of anything to warrant someone doing such a thing.
MUSEU DO ALEIJADINHO

O Museu do Aleijadinho, instalado na Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Antônio Dias, em Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, foi reaberto no dia 27 de novembro de 2007, com uma nova concepção museográfica, idealizada pela Associação Espírito Santo Cultura, onde a visitação pública interage harmoniosamente com os espaços religiosos.
O legado artístico do gênio da arte barroca brasileira, Antônio Francisco Lisboa, o
Aleijadinho, está reunido, pela primeira vez, em um só lugar. Um multivídeo, apresentado em uma grande tela instalada dentro da igreja, que mostra toda a obra de Aleijadinho que está espalhada pelas cidades históricas mineiras.
O museu exibe obras do artista, documentos originais e um rico acervo de arte sacra. A nova fase do museu é marcada ainda por uma coleção de tótens de madeira que retratam as etapas de elaboração da talha barroca dourada, uma doação da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, de Portugal. Além do osso da mão, uma das vértebras do artista também estará exposta. O projeto de requalificação do museu teve o apoio da Prefeitura de Ouro Preto, do Governo do Estado de Minas Gerais e do Iphan/Ministério da Cultura.
O Museu do Aleijadinho conta, além das salas da sacristia e da cripta, com um novo espaço de exposição permanente no consistório, um mini-auditório e uma sala para projeções de áudio e vídeo nas tribunas do santuário. Com a requalificação, o Museu do Aleijadinho se transforma em referência na obra do artista, refere um comunicado da Espírito Santo Cultura. O trabalho de museografia é do arquiteto Haron Cohen. A curadoria do Museu é do historiador português José de Monterroso Teixeira, um especialista em cultura barroca. Os espaços foram organizados por temas: “Festa Religiosa”, “O ouro”, “Encenação da morte” e “Arte da Talha”.
O projeto de requalificação do Museu do Aleijadinho, sob os auspícios da Lei Federal de Incentivo à Cultura, foi patrocinado pelo Espírito Santo Investiment, Cemig, Caixa Econômica Federal, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e Bradesco Seguros e Previdência.

Participar e presenciar a Festa de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, em Cachoeira, é viajar para um tempo e uma paisagem onde a energia de escravos mortos ou torturados ainda ecoa e vivenciar todo um clima sagrado e anímico, rico de cores e sentimentos de liberdade e religiosidade. É desvendar aquele que talvez seja o primeiro movimento feminista negro do País: a Irmandade da Boa Morte, uma organização de mulheres negras, fundada em 1820, que, à sua moda, resistiu e se rebelou contra os sofrimentos impostos pelo regime escravagista, desde a jornada diária de trabalho de 18 horas nas lavouras aos castigos e mutilações, como o corte dos tendões das fujonas, os açoites em público, os grilhões e brasas em seus rostos, a extração e quebra de dentes a frio e o corte de orelhas e da língua daquelas consideradas mais rebeldes, sem falar, é claro, dos abusos sexuais.

Lady of the "Good Death Fraternity", Cachoeiro, Bahia, Brasil
The "Good Death Fraternity", from Cachoeiro city, in the inlands of Bahia, Brasil, is a 2-centennial organization of black women that, in their way, had resisted and rebelled against the sufferings imposed by the slavery system, like the 18-hour daily working journey, the punishments and mutilations, the public spankings, the chains, the glowing iron marks on her faces, the cut of tongues and ears from the most uneasy. (And, of course, the sexual abuses.) In fact, this was the first feminist movement in Brasil and be present in the "Our Lady of Good Death Festival", that they promote every August in their original town, give us the chance of think and live a little bit this ancient and particular felling of freedom and religiousness. The most interesting fact is that, though this is a catholic Festival, with masses and processions, all these ladies are highly involved in the Candomblé, the purest religious tradition practiced in Brasil, taken from Africa by their ancestors. (Even so some of them fully deny this during these days, dedicated to honour the Death an Ressurection of the Virgin Mary.)
from the archives...I remember waiting around and coming back at least 2 times to try and find the owner of this great bike. I so wanted him to allow me a few shots without the "do not not" and car show papers stuck on it. So here's how I saw that day..

5 exp HDR RAW (using a monopod) -2.0, -1.0, 0.0, +1.0, +2.0 converted into Jpegs in zoombrowser zx. Then merged into single HDR in Photomatix and tone-mapped. Finally denoised and curved in CS3.

... situa-se o largo do Carmo onde teve existência o Convento do Carmo, um mosteiro fundado em 1389 pelo santo condestavel D, Nuno Alvares Pereira no cumprimento de um voto lançado na Batalha de Aljubarrota. O fundador leccionou no mosteiro e ai foi sepultado, mais tarde foi translado.....

As soon as I saw this guy I knew I wanted to take his photograph and he was more than happy to let me. He moved around so much making him hard to photograph and as a result didn't quite my desired composition but I'm sure I'll see him again and grab another photograph.
