At first I thought there was a malformity to the back of this mallard hen's head. Now, I understand that this bird is called a "tufted" mallard duck. Maybe a species variant, not really sure. What I do know is that she has one crazy hair-do! Almost like a 1950's style bee hive. She was very friendly, practically tame, and swam right up to me as I was laying on the bank photographing the farther away wood ducks. Thought that you all might enjoy this shot, and the hair!

En el centro de la Isla nos esperan los fascinantes paisajes de Lagoa do Fogo, sin duda una de las grandes atracciones naturales de la isla (isla que, por otra parte, abunda en bellezas de la naturaleza). Este gran lago azul -unos 2 km de largo por 1 de ancho- ocupa el suelo del cráter de un volcán ya extinto y cuya caldera se formó de manera definitiva tras la erupción de 1563. Este místico lago, rodeado de altas montañas y abundante vegetación endémica transmite un ambiente de paz y serenidad donde la belleza reina. Sus aguas son transparentes, hay una pequeña península y playas de blanca arena. Ha sido declarado reserva natural.

Its waters are clear, there is a small peninsula and white sand beaches. It has been declared a nature reserve.
