The automatic writing project started out as an activity among friends and locals. I would write a line someone else would write a line and so on... Then people would overhear us and ask if they could participate and write something too (which surprised me) of course I said "yes!" At that point I realized that lots of people have something to say. I started asking strangers to add entries, then I graduated to offering people $1.00 to participate, some people do not accept the dollar and some pay me a $1.00 (paying it forward). It's becoming quite a lovely, surprising and compelling project. People from many walks of life are participating: homeless, a news reporter, academics, students, doctors, drug addicts, lawyers, tourists etc... People have written things in my journal that they'd never say out loud, not to anyone. Some of it's so sad, some intriguing, hilarious and so on... At the end of the day, every one of these people understand that their entries are being uploaded to the internet and are comforted in knowing that they will be heard. I have no idea where this is going, but it's going just fine! FYI: English is not everyone's first language here. I will be illustrating the book/journal after the text is done. I hope that everyone who reads these entries learns something about people, mostly that we never know what someone else is going through.

“Views of our flight over Ipswich in the Mazda airship in 1995 by Marian and Barry Jordan who are both members of The Ipswich Society.”

Back in mid May 1995 Marian and Barry Jordan had a very pleasant surprise. They had been customers of the local Mazda car dealer for some time and were regarded by them as being worthy customers.

As a reward for their custom they were selected to board the Mazda airship when it came to Ipswich on a leg of its trip round the country advertising the brand. With them came a competition winner from the area plus the pilot of the aircraft as they headed smoothly off to the north-west towards town.

The journey which took forty-five minutes, found them soaring gently to about five hundred feet over Nacton Road; cruise towards the town passing over Marion’s mother’s house in Clapgate Lane. Barry and Marian were able to continue filming and snapping away at the views before turning to fly over the town centre and the Cornhill. Although it’s not possible to see photographs of the whole trip, they flew over the north of the town towards Whitton over Whitehouse then turning towards the river following it down towards the wet dock. They flew over what was to become the Waterfront where it was possible to see the beginnings of the development there. Further down the river, Ostrich Creek was visible before sight of the glorious new Orwell Bridge came into sight. Finally, turning left they flew unhurriedly back to Ipswich airport.

On their descent they were greeted by a gang of lads - the thirteen -strong support team employed to grab the guy ropes and bring the “blimp” to a halt. Marian and Barry celebrated their trip on the May afternoon with a glass of bubbly along with the other passenger as the pilot prepared to head off on his tour round the country.

The Jordans tell us it was a smooth, exciting and pleasant journey with no hairy moments, in a space about the size of the interior of a large car, it was very noisy so they had to wear headphones but the view was splendid.

And they are still customers of Mazda Cars!

____________

According to research, 1995 was a good year for the Mazda Blimp. The ABC Lightship A60 N2022B “Mazda” was chartered for nine months, in which time it is toured 125 dealers being used to entertain clients and impress locals. It was recorded in June in Southend and filmed over Worcester in September. Mazda's marketing manager at the time said: 'When it's in an area it's a superb means of outgunning our rivals.'

There were some drawbacks, however, most notably the weather. At one point, one airship was grounded for three weeks because of low cloud and there was also the matter of its stately pace. 'When you move on to the next location it can take a long time to get there. 'You might spend two or three days flying over cows and sheep.' reported a spokesman at the time

8 -10 Waterworks Street, Ipswich & Silent Street, Ipswich.

In 1984 the buildings in Waterworks Street were earmarked for demolition to make way for the widening of Waterworks Street as part of the “eastern gyratory traffic management scheme”. The adjacent Dutch gabled Ipswich Ragged School was to have been dismantled and re-erected behind the new carriageway line.

In the event the otherwise bland-looking exterior was seen by an alert member of the Ipswich Archaeological Society to be concealing a medieval timber-framed structure worthy of salvation. Through the prompt action of that society together with the county archaeologist the borough council’s conservation officer and the Ipswich Historic Buildings Trust the structure was surveyed, tagged, dismantled and taken to store at Villa Farm, Tuddenham. It was at that time hoped that they would be able to secure funding and a site to incorporate the frame in a new building elsewhere.

The adjacent ragged school front was moved intact to its new position by constructing rails under its foundation and the use of hydraulic rams.

The timber frame of number 8 & 10 appeared to be 16th century, that the building had an unusual arrangements for its genre. It had commodious basements with fireplaces in the central chimney and the ground floor storey was comparatively high. The evidence of this was more likely to have been a workshop. The windows on the frontage were Georgian and Victorian interventions but the two entrance doors were placed in original frame openings.

The roof over number 10 and been raised on framing from its wall-plate and there were extensive later additions to the rear of the original building.

In 1990 Jackson projects were planning to construct a large office development in Silent Street with a small two storey office building beside the access road to the site. Duncan McKenzie was the architect responsible for design and supervision of the project.

Late in the design process the Ipswich historic building trust had approached local developers including Jackson seeking to find a buyer and suitable site for the mediaeval frame which had been saved from the road widening scheme in Waterworks Street. The trust had been unable to secure either funding or a location for the building for it to be resurrected under their own conservation scheme.

An inspection of the stored timber at Villa Farm, Tuddenham and a check on the overall size of the wall plates confirmed that with some tight planning the building could be accommodated on the site. On this basis the builders had the courage to commit themselves to the purchase of the structure for incorporation into the new two-storey building. The building was to be designed to current commercial standards of cost and amenity.

Suffolk Building Design Ltd were employed to repair and direct the frame onto prepared piled foundations. Structural timbers were cleaned at their premises and each framed panel was assembled there to identify the extent and nature of repair and replacement. Replacements for missing items were generally made in green oak and spliced repairs were made on a like-for-like basis. Surprisingly it was found that the frame was made from a mixture of timbers predominantly of oak but including chestnut elm pine and ash.

No attempt was made to disguise intervening repairs and replacements. The structure was clad in lime-rich render over metal lathing and plywood sheeting. Mineral wool fibre installation was sandwiched between the external cladding and internal plastering. The internal plaster was carried out using lime plaster reinforced with man-made fibre in place of the traditional hair binding material.

Dear Aunt and Uncle

I take my pen in hand this afternoon to write you a few lines hoping it will find you both well, as it leaves us all enjoying the same blessing, we have three little children. The youngest, 7 weeks old, whose name is Grace. The other little girl's name is Mary Stella, aged 2 years and 8 months old, and our little boy's name is Joseph Franklin, aged 5 years and 2 months old. We feel that we have reason to be proud of our little ones and I do feel that there is a very great responsibility resting upon us now to bring up our children right, and hope that we may be spared to bring them up. We are having a splendid winter, no snow yet. We have a schoolhouse only a quarter of a mile from us. We have a preacher 3 times in 2 weeks, twice on sabbath and [end of page]

[Page 2] once the next. We are very thankful for that much. We consider that is pretty good for a new country. We believe that our preacher is an excellent man, one that feels the weight of his work. He is a thorough worker. Mother has sent me some of those books called the (Guide). I like them very much and consider them next to the Bible. I intend to take them just as soon as I can afford to, but at present I can't take it. We are getting along as well as we could expect for we came here to a new country with almost nothing but an old team. We were obliged to live in a sod house, which was not as good as a cellar, but we had a small frame house now, and some other things around us, but we have had to work very hard. Husband [B. F. Mills] and I did all our harvesting alone this year. We had 30 acres of small grain and 20 acres of corn, but prices are low and we have had to buy so much machinery that it takes more than we can raise to pay up our debts. Corn is only 20 cents a bushel [end of page]

[Page 3] and the prospect is that is will be cheaper still, and we are owing 103 dollars yet, which is due this fall, but cannot raise the money. Our brother [Friend CLAYDON] arrived here last Thursday all safe. Our brother told us that you had not forgotten the promise you made us about seven years ago, of giving us each $100 dollars, and that if we were in need of it and would write to you, you would send it to us. Now I do not want you to think that I am a beggar for I would rather mortgage our place than beg, but I think it would be acting a lie if I did not write, for I am sure we are in need. I wish you would both come out here and see us. I think you might afford to come and see this beautiful country. We don't live nice like Eastern people do, but we would give you our best accomodations. Father and mother and little brother came to see us this fall and liked the country very much. We should be very glad to see [end of page]

[Page 4] you if you would come. If you can't, please send both of your pictures and a lock of your hair. I am making a hair wreath and I want to get all the relatives' hair that I can. It is almost supper time. I must close for this time. Please write soon. If you wish to send us anything, please sent it to

If you have changed your minds let us know soon received this from your niece, Sarah Mills

NOTES:

Sarah's brother, Friend Claydon, is in the 1870 US Census for Greenfield, Saratoga Co., NY, age 12, staying with James & Charity Claydon at least until Fall 1874. Friend's mother, Mary, wrote a letter dated 10/26/1874 to James about her son, who was in Greenfield at the time. Therefore, Friend (age 18) must be the brother who spoke of James' promise of $100 to any niece/nephew in need.
