Marylebone Railway Closure
In 1985, I completed my geography degree dissertation! The Problems of Railway Closures, with reference to the proposed closure of the Marylebone - Amersham line.
This was my hand-drawn route map.
'Looking at the frequent services operated today by Chiltern Railways, it seems hard to believe that the rail lines into Marylebone were once seriously considered for closure. Yet back in the mid-1980s under-utilization of the route led to proposals to convert the line into a dedicated bus route, with the site of Marylebone station being converted into a bus station, or sold off to raise an estimated £10 million. Today this proposal and others like it – such as a plan to convert much of what now forms London Overground north of the river into roads – are mostly forgotten. Yet for a time the possibility was very real, and London may have been left with a rail landscape very different from that which exists today.'

'British Rail formally announced plans to close Marylebone on 15 March 1984, pending a statutory consultation process, and closure notices were posted at the station. The proposals proved controversial and faced strong opposition from local authorities and the public, leading to a legal battle which lasted for two years. Despite the pending closure, passenger numbers only dropped by about 400 per day from 1968 levels. The conversion project proved impractical due to the headroom limitations on the line and the closure was quietly dropped.'
The station was revived under the control of the Network SouthEast sector of British Rail. The introduction of the inter-modal and unlimited use Capitalcard (now known as the Travelcard) led to a sharp rise in commuters into London, absorbing the spare capacity at Paddington and Baker Street and eliminating the possibility of Marylebone's services being diverted.'
'Marylebone was reprieved from the threat of closure on 30 April 1986, and an £85 million modernisation and refurbishment programme of the station and its services was granted. This was funded by selling part of the station to developers, including two of the original four platforms at the west of the station and the third span of the train shed. In order to replace these, the central cab road was removed, and two new platforms numbered 2 and 3 were created in its place. The run-down lines into Marylebone were modernised with new signalling and higher line speeds. In 1991, the fleet of Class 115 trains on local services was replaced by Class 165 Turbo trains, and service frequencies were increased. Services to Banbury were extended to the reopened Birmingham Snow Hill station in 1993, creating the first long-distance service into Marylebone since 1966. Initially this service ran at two-hourly intervals, but it proved popular and was increased to an hourly frequency in 1994.'

I like to think that my dissertation helped save the station and line in some small way :)
The first dissertation to be ever presented by a graduating student to both the university and Macedonian art society. This event led directly to Maja's early introduction to the society.
Coming soon, the design of my dissertation. It's all about how magazines are being affected by the increasing online activity and the affect that this is having on existing printed magazines.
I think this was supposed to be a few weeks ago, but hey better late than never right? Not sure I like this new format though ;/

Dr. E would go on to heal the blind with his NSF-funded, award-winning Ph.D. dissertation which also laid down the foundations of Light Time Dimension Theory. Over the years, LTD Theory added foundational *physical* postulates, principles, and equations en route to becoming numerous books, with this one forming the simple, illustrated introduction. My fine art photography (writing with light) graces the books!

youd think that after making this kind of mess out of my dissertation that I would at least have a research question to show for it. but no, all ive got is a mess. at least its colorful. i need bigger paper.

Her Dissertation was "Ultrafast Photochemistry of Aqueous Iron(III) Complexes". That is completely over my head of how it fits into everyday life but I am very proud of her.
Is it dinner time? *sniff* *sniff* Yes, it is! (It's like sniffing the cork in a fancy restaurant).* For the Flickr Group Roulette Group.
*You should never sniff the cork in a fancy restaurant, it'll make you look like a moron. A wine cork smells like a cork. A cork with wine on it. In stead you should inspect it for mildew and wait to sip your wine. When the waiter or sommelier pours you a bit of wine and stands back you should give it a quick swirl and smell it, then take a sip, hold it in your mouth and then swallow. Wait a second and inhale, notice the lingering flavors. Don't make a big production out of it. The server has other people to serve, s/he isn't waiting to hear a long dissertation on the scents and flavor of the wine, s/he just wants to know if you like it enough to drink the whole bottle. He wants to make sure it isn't corked. If the wine tastes wrong, ask the server to taste it and give their opinion. If it's good gesture to have the glasses filled up.
Who knew a picture of cat food would give a wine lesson?
My work as a writer and as an artist have been closely connected for the past five years as I've worked on jewelry design and my dissertation in the same physical, mental, and emotional spaces. Dissertation Amulet makes these interconnections explicit, commemorating a landmark in my writing process. I preserved segments of text from a recently completed chapter under glass cabochons in a design evocative of my aesthetics as a writer.

“The Rite of Spring” was largely forgotten until the 1970s. What survives today is a reconstruction of Nijinsky’s masterpiece. In the late 1970s, Millicent Hodson, a doctoral candidate in dance history at Berkeley, set out, as part of her dissertation project, to reconstruct Nijinsky's "The Rite of Spring," which had its première with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris, in 1913. Igor Stravinsky’s score of "The Rite" survived, but the ballet, after nine performances in 1913, was never given again.
“Hodson had only little pieces of evidence, but she had lots of them. There were three backstage photos, together with a series of pencil sketches made by an artist in the audience. There was Stravinsky's rehearsal score, which noted entrances and exits, and also a score, marked by Nijinsky's assistant, that indicated certain movements, in broad terms ("They have arrived hopping," "They stop suddenly"). There were many surviving reviews, plus a letter from Bronislava Nijinska detailing, fifty-odd years after the fact, the death-dance of the sacrificial maiden. (That dance was set on her. Then she got pregnant and had to pull out of the ballet.) This was nowhere near enough to reconstruct a thirty-six-minute ballet that had a cast of forty-six dancers. Still, Hodson soldiered on, and eventually she acquired a partner: Kenneth Archer, an English art historian who was doing research on Nicholas Roerich, the Russian painter who designed "The Rite." Hodson and Archer combined their findings, got married, and went on working, she on the dance, he on the sets and costumes. Photos such as these in Comoedia Illustre were invaluable in reconstructing the ballet which produced a theatrical riot in 1913 when the Paris audience witnessed a tribe of hunched-over dancers on stage shuddering and stamping to Stravinsky’s pounding score. Ballet goers had never experienced anything like it before.
“The Rite of Spring” is now regarded as the foundation of modern dance and a true masterpiece. If you’d like to see the ballet in its entirety, check out the 1989 performance of the Joffrey Ballet on Youtube. It’s in three parts.

For my upcoming dissertation I will have to do a lot of research, so to motivate myself to do it I made a special notebook. The pages are partly printed preparation, partly scrap paper I had at home from various old notebooks and school exercise books.
