The grade 11 biology classes recently completed their fetal pig dissection. This activity served as a hands on (hands in) review of their unit on “Animals: Structure and Function.” It was an amazing site to see each student relate what we studied in the unit to real life. Although some were apprehensive at the beginning, as the days went by all students forgot their fears and became fully engaged in the dissection.

We also had a chance to take our blood pressure and learn about heart health.

Tadaa!! Not as bloody as i expected it to be.. The whole red lump stuff is the liver, the heart is purple-ish still beating rhythmically.. Pretty interesting.. Next week, we're gonna dissect a mouse, which i didn't get to do when i was in high school.. (^^

And remove an itty-bitty earbone. Even in larger carp these things are small, and nearly transparent. I had to start using 'cheaters' to snag them out of the rinsing dish and into tubes by the end of the day.

All day long I could just hear Colin Meloy singing "And when they find you Otolith..."

Here is a pile of young-of-the-year and year 1 carp. We had a batch of 76 common carp to dissect. We were collecting GSI (gonadosomatic index) and the otoliths (earbones), used to determine development and age.
