Display case angle view in the main hall of the Central Library
The Children's Book Celebration for 2010 celebrates the books and artwork of Walter Wick, in conjunction with the exhibit at the Walters Art Museum near the Central Library.
Even though there's no way it would ever fit in the house ... it's one GORGEOUS giant amethyst geode fragment.
There's one next to this case that kids (and I!) can touch, but the photographs of it didn't turn out so well.
For group "The Alphabet Challenge": A is for amethyst.

Such a tourist, taking pictures at Zabar's! I was so disoriented I tried to pay for my petits-fours at the chocolate counter (it's still a grocery store, you still pay at the front!). An onlooker laughed at me, but not in a mean way.

At the end of December, my cousin Holly and her family drove out from Tucson to visit us for a few days. While they were here, I took them to do some sightseeing, starting at the Texas Capitol and then making our way down Congress Avenue to Sixth Street, where we stopped by Voodoo Doughnut (212 E. 6th St.) for a treat. Holly filmed this brief clip featuring one of the rotating doughnut displays...

Mother Gothel Disney Villains Designer Collection Doll
Personal Photos - Deboxing - Backing Opened
The cardboard backing has been cut open along its edges, and opened up. The tabs of the plastic spacer and end of the wire around the doll's waist are visible. The tabs are freed from the tape holding them down. The wire has been unwound.
The slip cover and acrylic top have been removed, revealing the Mother Gothel doll in her display case in clear view from three sides. She is still attached to the backing and plastic spacer by wires and T-tabs. She is also supported by the built-in display stand.

FIELD TRIP:
THE HISTORY OF GEOLOGY AND MINING IN THE FOREST OF DEAN.
MAY 19-21, 2017

... to comprehend what it was like [in the early 19th Century] trying to find iron and coal when the geology of the area was poorly understood.
My report of this field meeting is at historyofgeologygroup.co.uk/newsletter/ (in Newsletter 60) but only available to non-members from late 2017.
Stop 2: Clearwell Caves.
These are just S of Coleford, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England.
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearwell_Caves
The caves have been mined for iron ore and ochre pigment for artists, probably for over 4000 years, and mining here is amongst the earliest in the British Isles. We stopped here to visit the mining museum and to go on a tour through the mine workings and caves. Jonathan Wright, a Forest of Dean Freeminer and the current operator of this mine, led our tour. The caves and museum are open to the public, and specialist caving tours into the less accessible parts of the system can be arranged for experienced cavers.
The photo shows some of the field party looking at displays inside the Clearwell Caves Museum. The boulder-like mass in front of some of our party is a form of iron ore called flint-ore. However, the mining here is now for the artists' ochre pigment which is now worth more than the iron ore. The organizer of this event and one of the leaders of the field trip itself, Cherry Lewis, is on the R.

The caves and mines extend a long way beneath ground, and there are other entrances not normally accessible to the public. True locations of my set of photos at Clearwell Caves may therefore differ from the generic one above.)

I can read that part, at least.

The lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel -- really the first part of the queue for the Tower of Terror -- is full of obscure Twilight Zone references. The thimble, and the text on the card next to it, is a reference to one of my favorite episodes, "The After Hours." (If you know the Twilight Zone, it's the one with the mannequins.)
