The Trakai Castle is famous for its Gothic architecture and its special location - it stands on an island on Lake Galve, one of the deepest lakes in Lithuania. You can reach the Castle by crossing the long wooden bridge. In the winter the lake freezes over and becomes a natural skating rink. You can also take in a special view of the Castle from a boat or yacht.

There is a museum inside the Castle. Visit it and explore the exhibitions of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, various archaeological artefacts and findings and as well as a collection of art. In the summer there are medieval festivals as well as various events and concerts in the Castle's courtyard.

The castle was built in the 14th century and served as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. However, the structure fell into disarray in the 17th century and was only rebuilt in 1951. In 1962, the Castle became a part of the Trakai History Museum

A major storm hit the Midwest on Saturday February 23rd. The storm dump rain, ice, and snow, followed by high winds. The result left the westside of the state of Iowa in complete disarray. Railroads scrambled to keep lines opened and many were drifted in. The Iowa Northern's Manly Sub was drifted in and on Wednesday the IANR was still plowing north to open the line up. Here the Jordan nose plows a drift up to the walkways in spots between Rockford and Marble Rock. Contractors were brought in for the drifts at MP 209, south of Nora Springs.

As I progress through my 70s there are times I pass by the mirror in our bedroom and wonder how that stranger got into our house. Sometimes depending on factors beyond our control, our bodies begin to fail us and good looks that attracted us to our mates have long sailed away. A pile of disintegrated basalt columns lay in disarray below still standing columns. The Drumheller Channels were scoured by the Ice Age Floods eroding basalt walls and bed rock creating all sorts of interesting geologic formations.

There are three signature bridges that are 'must shoot' locations when visiting the Marias Pass environs. On my one wintery three day visit a long time ago I made sure to capture at least one train on each of them

Hence the eastbound Empire Builder, train number 8, is running about 3 hrs late as she sails across the Middle Fork of the Flathead River and Java Creek on her eastbound climb to the Continental Divide at Marias Pass on this cold gray Christmas Eve. This 740 ft long single track Pratt deck truss bridge is located at MP 1165.3 on BNSF's Hi Line Subdivision and was built in 1900 by the Great Northern.
