Yesterday December 7th, I travelled across New Zealand's South Island by train. The weather was terrible, it poured rain, but that's one of travel's little inconveniences.

The train was filled with tourists, most heading south to the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. Most expected a bus connection from Greymouth train station, others, like myself, had booked a hire car for the travel south.

The connecting buses were cancelled, peoples' travel plans were in disarray. I collected my hire car and took the highway south, I planned so visit the glaciers, Queenstown and Milford Sound.

Thirty Kilometres south, at the lovely town of Hokitika, I discovered the highway was closed. A bridge had been swept away, a landslide blocked the road, and a hillside of pine trees had fallen across the road. I stayed the night in Hokitika and the rain poured down.

With my way blocked and no prospect for the road to open any time soon, I turned my wheels towards the Alps and Christchurch, a mere 245 Km to the east. This shot taken in the rain as I drove towards the Alps.

Nutmeg. Disarray Bed @ Shiny Shabby

These Great Blue Herons look ready to leave the nest and the hierarchy among the nestlings seems obvious. The dominant heron stands tall, and chatters with two of the others. All three of those herons' crests are elevated, and all three are animated.

The fourth heron sits crouched over, crest flat and in disarray. He is so far to the edge of the nest, that he appears on the verge of falling out.

Moi je m'en Fou de gagner peu ou beaucoup , l'important c' est ce que je cultive à l'intérieur de mon jardin et que je partage à l'extérieur.... mais il est vrai que si je suis la seule à partager mon Intérieur... et bien je n'aurai rien à partager avec ceux qui sont différent de moi, qui sont fermés et ne disent jamais ce qu'ils pensent.

Here's one from the "vault." I've said that I've never gotten a good photo of a Brown pelican and, after looking again at this shot, I'm still not sure I've gotten an image to be proud of.

Perhaps this image is "off" because he's preening and his feathers are in disarray ... or pehaps it's because I just don't believe the colors even though that's what they are.

So, for the first time in public, my Brown Pelican Preening at Monterey Bay, California.

The brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a bird of the pelican family, Pelecanidae, one of three species found in the Americas and one of two that feed by diving into water. It is found on the Atlantic Coast from New Jersey to the mouth of the Amazon River, and along the Pacific Coast from British Columbia to northern Chile, including the Galapagos Islands. The nominate subspecies in its breeding plumage has a white head with a yellowish wash on the crown. The nape and neck are dark maroon–brown. The upper sides of the neck have white lines along the base of the gular pouch, and the lower fore neck has a pale yellowish patch.

This particular bird may be the This subspecies, P. o. californicus, which breeds on the Pacific coast of California and Baja California, and south to Jalisco. Its non-breeding range extends north along the Pacific coast to British Columbia, and south to Guatemala. It is rarely found in El Salvador.
