A female of what I call the "slash dimple-wing" morphotype of a new genus of lightning beetle family Lampyridae. The reddish slash across its elytra mimics a lycid beetle in the region. However, the slash is incomplete in some, including this one but much moreso in others, leading me to refer to them as intermediate or "hybrid" forms between the slash and the all-black morphotype. Baeza, Napo, Ecuador, 1950 meters elevation.
BTW, the "dimples" on the rear portion of the elytra I think may be a case of texture mimicry of lycid beetle elytra to confuse or possibly just alert bats with the echo signature of the elytral surface that they, like lycid beetles, are a bad bet for dinner.
"Swan-Sundari". Thats what we always called her after Pradnya named her so.
Dimple died in 1st week on Sept 08. :(
During the first 8 days of March, I photographed Dimpled Trout Lily (Erythronium umbilicatum) at sites in three different states (GA, SC, NC). I saw this one in the Nine Times Forest and Preserve in Pickens County, South Carolina.

Mesquite Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California.
These looked like what can only be described as dimples in sand. Do you know why these dimples form?
I was reading some more material on Death Valley and found that the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells, where I shot all these photographs are called “Mesquite Dunes”. Other popular fields on sand dunes in Death Valley are the Eureka Dunes, Panamint Dunes, Saline Valley Dunes, and the Ibex Dunes. I always hated the fact that my most prominent dimple was a "crater" rather than an nice curved, gently sloping dimple. However, I've started to develop another dimple on my cheek that I wish would get just a little deeper.
In random news, what are your thoughts on this comment? My first instinct is to let the guy use my photo because middle school science textbooks are my livelihood and I'm all for promoting science education. On the other hand, I worry about just giving my photo to someone like that. There's a chance that they already downloaded the photo (I just changed my download permissions, but that copy of the photo is probably not high enough resolution for book printing.)
I loved this lovely lady's smile. The entire night, there was more smiling and laughing (and cheering!, when the gift basket winners came up to claim their prized) than I've experienced in a long, long time.

This is an old photo - but one that I'm fond of. I was trying to use the sun to get some side-lighting... I have a bit to learn when it comes to metering.
I've already posted examples of this "dimple-wing" species, one of four that belong in an as-yet-undescribed genus of lightning beetles (family Lampyridae) but this shot of a male/female pair contained the first male of this species I've encountered. I collected eight of this species in a single afternoon of collecting, all perched on shaded or semi-shaded leaves in Baeza, Napo, Ecuador, ~1800 meters elevation.

Seriously, I love those smile! It took about halfway through the shoot before he warmed up enough to smile with his teeth, but this little smirk is adorable.
