Doc has downed a lot of firewood over the years - always being sure to harvest the trees that are old and about to fall down on their own. When you are young, you harvest trees furthest from your cabin door, thereby leaving the trees nearest your cabin for old age, at which time you are running out of both strength and stamina. HSS!

I sought the wood in winter

When every leaf was dead;

Behind the wind-whipped branches

The winter sun set red.

The coldest star was rising

To greet that bitter air,

The oaks were writhen giants;

Nor bud nor bloom was there.

The birches, white and slender,

In deathless marble stood,

The brook, a white immortal,

Slept silent in the wood.

Standing still for long stretches of time requires the occasional stretch.

A sum of three images.

Dried flowers, for the "Smile on Saturday" theme; "Get nature in your home".

The heads of these tiny flowers are so small that they are immeasurable. HSoS!

These tiny dried flower heads are trapped inside of a large canning jar, along with a bird on a nest. It's a cute display, but rather hard to get a decent shot of. Since I live in rural Alaska - our days are dark, and temperatures have been running between twenty and thirty below zero for almost a month. Not exactly the weather for growing house plants - or even keeping them alive.

I spent several years living in the rain forest of Southeast Alaska. In this image you see a forest service cabin on Admiralty Island. There is a brown bear for every square mile on the island, for a population of about 1,600 bears. That is more than the whole lower 48 US states combined. While Doc and I had a few close encounters - no bear ever became aggressive.

A composite image combining an unconventional, faceless portrait from a black-and-white negative (taken in 1973) and a recent digital macro of wood grain. The original photo was taken with a Minolta SR-T 101 SLR using Kodak Tri-X film. The wood grain macro was taken in 2017 with a Nikon D7000.

National Squirrel Appreciation Day is noticed on January 21. It’s everything in regard to the squirrel. They are so beautiful, from the large cute eyes, to the little standing ears, to the fluffy-tailed hair. The nut-burying herbivorous animal performs a vital function within the setting. It is essential to understand and acknowledge these scurrying animals for his or her lively function. National Squirrel Appreciation Day was created to acknowledge all various kinds of squirrels.

**The squirrel in this image was destroying a towel we had draped over a picnic table to dry. He was so cute that we didn't have the heart to scold him.

The water and weather are fun enough to watch from behind warm dry windows but sometimes it's better to go out and get bathed by it! :D

This started out as a photo of the convention center's glass atrium canopy and then I blended in some water, ripple, and spiral filter effects just because I love a good vortex! :D
