Morose, could be the current smart word,

but most probably tyranny is on their goal.

I know of many poets that cannot sway a word,

and always drown themselves beyond control!

Quasuo

he's forgotten for what he's searching, after all of these thousand years he is a afraid of wandering in the night, I wonder about his shattered heart, yesterday he thought, this rain hurts because I can't keep my lights on, it hurts when I can't feel the water on my skin.

UPDATE: 30 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ it's been a while I have done anything on this project since I got meself a new dslr and got busy onto it :D

+ added more detail on parasol and added shadow/highlight details

+ added white tips (basing from real Japanese parasol photo references)

+ colour shading on a parasol is proving to be very tricky as light dances around the concentric surfaces and varies as it rotates from its epicentre...damn :D

+ next is add details on centre bamboo frame and add detaiks on centre/main dress embroidery

++ looks great on your iPod Touch 4G or iPhone or iPad :), especially when zooming in and turning the image upside down, primo stuff :D

-

-

-

-

UPDATE: 15 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added "thread" on the collar and the green cloth - only visible on close up tho - I can't release the original file as it is big file :) but the threads are "sewn" with detail.

++ looks great on your iPod Touch 4G or iPhone or iPad :), especially when zooming in and turning the image upside down, primo stuff :D

-

-

UPDATE: 14 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added texture on left side yellow and green/white neck silk - it looks better on close up tho :)

+ will be adding stitches on the slik cloth as well :D and embroidery on the mid chest of the dress - so it would like as if it is stitched and believable

+ the parasol bamboo stips... well next time :D as that will take crap loads of time - maybe reduce the number of bamboo strips to make it easier for me... we'll see.

++ looks great on your iPod Touch 4G or iPhone or iPad :), especially when zooming in and turning the image upside down, primo stuff :D

-

-

UPDATE: 13 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added right side silk clothing

+ moved right hair loopy :D

+ modified hair band with detail

+ added detail on the middle dress

+ will be refining right side silk clothing and hopefully adding bamboo frame for the parasol

-

-

UPDATE: 5 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ refinded silk cloth - this is my first time doing silk cloth and from what I can remember, silk cloth sticks to skin and creates air pockets... so that's what I drew and along with some photo samples of generic semi-transparent silk fabric to check how silk reacts to light

+ will try to integrate texture onto the silk fabric later and finish drawing silk on the other hand as well

+ added more detail on the middle dress

+ added extra hair to cover the ears :D - the ears was quite annoying :D

+ I also added a hair pin on that extra hair :). The hair clip was originally dark green but changed hue to dark gray since it's becoming a focal point when I didn't want to :)

-

-

UPDATE: 4 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added silk fabric - the cloth folds are very tricky

+ corrected face geometry, skin tones and shadows

+ will be refining the cloth next time

+ you can still see the tattoo behind the silk cloth :D

-

-

UPDATE: 1 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have to post this. :D

I accidentally reversed the image before closing Photoshop and I coughed up what I saw :D... since I have been doing the project in normal view and correcting mistakes that way. What I saw was a different person :D, more like a beautiful stranger.

Yes, I have my mouth gaped open for minutes watching the reversed image of this project. Wow... No wonder veteran artists always advise to reverse images once in a while...

-

-

UPDATE: 1 May

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ corrected face geometry issues and tones/shadows

+ corrected hair on forehead and shadows as this is affecting perspective (a lot)

+ corrected shoulders to neck muscles

-

-

UPDATE: 30 April

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ a few updates from today

+ added hands and arm detail

+ I removed the canvas cloth for the arms as I remembered that Toph is indeed a Bei Fong and that means she deserves silk :D and in order to draw silk, one has to draw the arms first, then draw the transparent silk on top of the skin

+ I also changed the shadows and tones on the face and neck

+ changed ears

+ I will be adding detail on the parasol and cloth next time

+ and no, don't get the wrong idea that I will be removing all of the clothes, lol

+ I also added a tattoo for her :D

-

-

UPDATE: 15 April

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ ok, added the parasol but it's not completed yet - I haven't added the bamboo strips yet, it will be an intricate job - the current parasol tested my Photoshop knowledge :D

+ I have also added the basic layout of Toph's hands

+ added cloth basic layout

+ next step is to add the parasol bamboo strips and add detail to the rice paper - also to smoothen gradients and add detail on the cloth and hands

-

-

UPDATE: 15 April

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added correct background

+ moved right eye closer to the mid-brow as it seems to be further away :D, I think its due to the adjustments I made on the nose bridge, now eyes are within the accepted proportions

+ will be adding a parasol (a Japanese rice paper umbrella) that Toph will be holding and a lantern on the right side

+ I will be detailing the cloth / dress as well (oh boy)

-

-

UPDATE: 1 April

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ after trying out Photoshop CS5 :D, I am sold. CS3 was a thing of the past :D

+ the update above used several features that made me jump to CS5

+ content aware fill and puppet warp was used to repair my mistakes :D - rather than draw it again, I just "moved" parts and background remained intact! That's how I moved my right side hair loopy. :)

+ to be able to rotate my canvas using the Wacom feature on CS5 is a really big bonus, especially drawing hair at an inconvenient angle

+ several performance tweaks on CS5 really helped load my massive layered project :D

+ using the puppet warp allowed me to correct the perspective of the hair band and the rear hair bun itself - I admit I still used the standard warp tool to give way to the puppet warp tool. Puppet warp takes care of the really intricate adjustments

+ I also added localized shadows in certain areas such as lips, nose and eyes, so shadows are uniform

+ also adjust nose highlights

+ major adjustments is on the hair itself - just adding the base tone and shape and it's looking what I wanted it to be. I will be adding strands for detailing later on

+ I also adjusted the ears - added more meat :D

++ Looks great on your Ipod Touch 4G / iPhone or Ipad :D, especially when you zoom it in and turn the image upside down, primo stuff :D

-

-

UPDATE: 16 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added facial features on the left cheek

+ adjusted shadows

+ added highlights

+ replaced previous hair :D, just trying out brown hair... I'll darken it later

+ the hair isn't complete yet, it's still in its initial stages - detailing will be added next time

+ balanced forehead to hair distance :)

++ Looks great on your Ipod Touch 4G / iPhone or Ipad :D, especially when you zoom it in and turn the image upside down, primo stuff :D

-

-

UPDATE: 9 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added detailed front hair

+ added more real estate on the forehead :D

+ fixed eyebrow / eyelid / ears shadows

+ will be refining hair bun detail

-

-

UPDATE: 5 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ made corrections on the left eye

+ added solid eyelashes

+ corrected skin tones

+ all of these change is making her so less Asian, lol

-

-

UPDATE: 5 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added detail on ears

+ moved tiara backwards :)

+ again, redrawn left eye -quite tricky for a big eye such as these

-

-

UPDATE: 4 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ as promised, I have added the traditional hair bun :)

+ will be finalising the front hair as well

+ added coloured tiara with flowers :D

-

-

UPDATE: 1 March

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ corrected ears location and form :)

+ trimmed left inner eye diameter

+ adjusted right eye lower eyelid to conform with eyeball shape and angle

-

-

UPDATE: 29 Feb

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added balls of light :) : this is only experimental

+ I want to challenge myself and draw multiple lanterns as foreground and background as a light source plus dusk as a back drop. this would be awesome but elaborate :)

-

-

UPDATE: 28 Feb

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ I almost forgot about this project :D, I can't believe it's been a month I haven't touched this lol

+ the work today is quite major, which includes shortening the length of the face

+ adjusted mid brows

+ added details on lips

+ added texture on skin and ears

+ added colour casts on shadows

+ started adding basic layout for the cloth which I assume will be very tricky during detailing phase

+ the face is now completed - probably some refinements later on for focal points but other than that, the next on the listI will be refining the hair

-

-

UPDATE: 2 Feb

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ many thanks to all the suggestions, here are the corrections as observed:

+ corrected neck shadows

+ corrected nose shape and width and added red blood tones on the nose

+ corrected lips

+ corrected chin shape - actually added more real estate on the jaw :D

+ added pronounced tear glands on the eyes

+ added pronounced eyelashes

+ corrected eye shape, eyebrow and eyelids

+ and many, many more

-

-

UPDATE: 28 Jan

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ experimented with lens blurring and light rendering

-

-

UPDATE: 17 Jan

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ fixed lips and shadows/tones on the chin

+ changed right cheek shadows

+ adjusted nose highlights and shape

+ and many more etc :D

-

-

UPDATE: 15 Jan

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ just finalising the face - I'm glad the face stage is almost done, just making sure gradients are correct and skin texture is appropriate

+ this project would have been done quicker if I did this fulltime :D

+ due to popular request, I added a mole for her :D

+ well, I thought, since the Avatar celebrated after their win against the Firelord, maybe during the evening partey they were throwing confettis on the air :D, so I drew the confettis... and maybe a photographer took a photo of Toph while there were confettis :D

-

-

UPDATE: 14 Jan

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ as of today, moved left eye closer to the nose :)

+ adjusted the right cheek shadows and tones

+ adjusted lips length and many other etc stuff

+ added experimental snow flakes :D

-

-

UPDATE: 25 Dec

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ fixed lips and a bit of the nose

+ humanized the skin a bit

+ I will fix the chin next :D

-

-

UPDATE: 23 Dec

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ holidays!!!

+ added basic colours today

+ I still need to fix the lips :)

-

-

UPDATE: 22 Dec

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ I haven't done any major work on this since Oct :)

+ thankfully it's the holidays and I did some final work for the face today and I'm glad ithe face is completed - the ears, not yet :D but it shouldn't take long

+ the next step is to finalise the hair

+ replaced left eye :D and added details on nose, lips and other skin tones and smoothed out the skin a bit

+ I have done some experimental colouring on the skin and this I think is the most difficult part

+ Toph now looks more aggressive, which is what she should look like :) and parts of the face feels more in place conpared to the previous incarnation

.

-

UPDATE: 18 Oct

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ reduced skin highlights

+ added lower eyelid hairs

+ added hair shadows

.

-

UPDATE: 7 Oct

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added chin and right cheek shadows and form

+ added nose details and shadows

+ all of these just to give the impression that the face is angled

.

.

UPDATE: 5 Oct

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ ok, my kiddo wanted to draw a bunny ear on this model - so allowed her to draw and did better than my version :D - I added some shadows to it to give it some depth (with her own graffiti, lol)

+ the hair above is simply a trial and it isn't what it should be but it is looking great :D - I will still be using the massive bun hair :) - we wondered how she'd look like with a straight hair, not bad :)

+ also added hair beads - these are drawn manually - added shadows too - these are detailed hair bead drawings :)

+ added/smoothed out shadows and corrected some irregularities on the skin tones

++ looks great at Large but please, this image is copyrighted, please be considerate, thanks.

.

.

UPDATE: 3 Oct

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ haven't done anything since :D

+ ok, the recent update includes smoothing out gradients

+ added right cheek shadows - since she's supposed to have high cheeks

+ softened highlights

+ added details on eyebrows

+ trimmed lips so it seems angled - since the face is angled :)

+ added eye tones

+ added neck details but I'm still not satisfied with it

+ removed left eye "eye bags" :D since it's making the left eye seemingly sagging

++ altho I now have the right tools, I just needed more time, lol

++ maybe 2 more sessions on the face and then I can concentrate on the hair (yay!)

.

.

UPDATE: 28 Sept

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ added ears detail

+ trimmed cheeks and chin :D since it kinda looked unbalanced

+ smoothed out some of the gradients but it needs more

+ added some pin point and broad highlights on the skin for contrast

+ rebalanced neck

+ I have to admit that the neck and ears were tricky :)

.

.

UPDATE: 27 Sept

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ my Wacom Intuos4 finally arrived last week but it took me a few days to get used to the eye to hand coordination

+ this tablet just feels as if I'm drawing on paper and oh, the nibs do weaer out fast...

++ back to the project - why in black and white? - this is the b&w layer which needs to be very detailed enough and even worthy enough not to be coloured before colouring it :D - this is what one renowed 2D artist does and I think his techniques makes sense and I like it. The normal way of painting as in placing a solid colour and then painting layers of colours is still ok but making it look great in B&W before colouring makes sense - shadows are easier to deal with :), I think - how would I know, this is my first time and I haven't even finished the project yet, lol

+ the image above is painted in CS3 using grayscale

+ the end result will be a skin thet looks "fleshy" and seemingly tangible - same goes with the hair and the cloth

+++ Stay tuned!

UPDATE: 3 May 2020

+ decided to make this drawing up to date with today's image processing methods, since the previous version's histogram is way to the left, when I was working on a brighter screen before at 120cdm(too bright), now I draw at 62cdm on my Wacom Cintiq 24HD and the original A2 pro print I did back in 2012 was a bit dark. This new version will look way better in large prints. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------

+ this is my first attempt on digital drawing and painting :D

+ I know, I am ordering a Wacom Intuos4 currently - using a mouse is so so but the Logitech G5 is an exception :)

+ I'm just getting back into one of the things I love to do since the early 90's - drawing faces. Back then it was just pencil and charcoal

+ Painting and drawing using a mouse on CS3 is very inconvenient indeed

++ About the project : I chose Toph as a model since there aren't any high resolution images of her. The challenge I placed onto myself is to convert Anime faces into human-ish form - the model above is the 11th incarnation :D - the other attenpts were very close to the Anime form but it didn't turn out well, since the Anime form was meant to be simple, although it could work, but I wanted the difficult route :D

++ Photoshop CS3 allows grouping layers and is very flexible and powerfull - there is so much to learn in Photoshop

++ since I'm only good at black and white drawing (pencil or charcoal), blending colours was a challenge - hair was a challenge too, pffft

+++ references : I have to do a lot of googling about drawing and painting in Photoshop - all provided numerous amount of usefull techniques but none taught how to succeed, lol

++++ Brushes and brushes - the most important in drawing and painting - the rest is imagination and persistence

++++ I will be updating the image above when I finish something worth while to post here :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, the Toph I will be drawing and painting is with her traditional hair "Bun" - a massive one that is and the image above is simply a crop from that massive hair bun, lol.

Toph will be wearing her traditional Bei Fong family outfit / gown (whatever), not the warrior outfit, so I will make sure she looks as cute as possible. :D

Getting Toph to look Asian is not easy with those massive Anime eyes :D, I even started with a smaller nose and lips, that didn't work out well.

Stay tuned. :)

Concept: A window as a symbolic barrier between the interior world (safety, comfort, and introspection) and the external world (freedom, chaos, and adventure). The viewer's eye peers out through the window, longing for something more, or perhaps, reflecting on what lies beyond but not yet reached.
