This picture shows diffuse lighting on a flower. You can tell where the light is coming from but there is not distinct shadows cast.

I started with a gorgeous picture of a lady that I found in a magazine. The paper was thin – too thin unfortunately – and it ripped when I tried to get it into place on the matte medium base. I don’t know if it was because the medium dried too quickly or if the magazine was too thin, but anyway, it ripped. And I got annoyed. And then I had a drink and calmed down. Then I started again – from the same magazine (I’m not one to give up easily) I chose a picture of the same lady in a different pose – but the intention was still there – I wanted to see how the wash worked with fairly bold colour. I stuck my image to the watercolour paper and it curved. And bubbled. And I got frustrated again. When it dried, I was a bit annoyed at all the creases, but hoped that the gesso wash would take some of them away or smooth them out a little.

I wasn’t entirely sure about my gesso wash – I just guessed as to the amounts of gesso and water as opposed to measuring – everything is trial and error isn’t it? Still, it seemed to work. I was surprised by the consistency and the ease with which it painted on, and I was really surprised that it dried with a chalky feel as opposed to the smooth one I had expected. I used three coats and was quite happy with the result with this image – it really made it look older – sort of vintage-ish but not quite, but still, older. Out of all the pieces I did first time round it’s my favourite.

Blown out highlight on the eye and body :( Also the second highlight in the eye is from direct sunlight, probably best to shoot in the shade. The other highlights may well be from sunlight and not the flash too.

Tests with an ND4 filter on a Voigtlander 25mm lens as wide as it can go, some shots are with a legacy pivotable strobe (sunpak auto-25sr) and the others are using sunshine.

The ND4 filter darkens the light coming into the lens allowing a lot more bokeh than would normally be possible at these bright levels of light.

Aluminum rod arm, which was cut to length. T joint fitted on the top to allow for other possible applications such as draping large sheets of fabric over poles.

Oslo's parliament building. I found myself in Oslo for the day on Monday this week. No time to muck around - first flight in, work, meeting, train, last flight out.

This was a snapshot taken as we hurried past on our way to the train station for the airport express train.

An altocumulus deck below cirrostratus.

Front view of my reflector mounted on the flash. As you can see, it creates a significantly larger flash area.

Please see the earlier pictures for an idea of how to make one.

I wanted her to look like she was IN the water she was trying to touch to no avail. Poor thing was stuck on a rock in the blazing sun.

I took this with my Pentax K-1000 with the 50mm prime lens and sky filter. 100 speed Agfa film. I developed the film and print myself. Even made the "seaweed" like diffusers outta plastic wrap and packing tape all by my lonesome. It was kinda funny cause in the dark room the kids kept asking "Mary, can I borrow that diffusy thingy you made?" hehehehe!

I don't really like the way she scanned- will have to play with trills scanner later to see if I can make it work better.

An example of a "product" shot taken using the diffuser and the waning overcast light from our kitchen window. The white background is a roll of "Foamie" material.

This photo represents diffuse lighting because it isn't obvious where the contrast of shadows is coming from. the light is everywhere lightly on the picture.
