Die Jesuitenkirche (Marktkirche)
Die ehemalige Jesuitenkirche St. Franz Xaver ist eine Stiftung Fürstbischof Ferdinands von Fürstenberg (1661-1683) für die Paderborner Jesuiten. Domprobst Dietrich von Fürstenberg, der spätere Fürstbischof (1585-1618), hatte sie 1580 nach Paderborn geholt und ihnen das aufgegebene Minoritenkloster am Kamp überlassen. Dort begannen sie 1596 mit der Errichtung einer neuen Niederlassung, die sich, ergänzt um die Gebäudetrakte des Gymnasiums und der Universität, schließlich zu einem großflächigen Komplex ausweitete.
In den ersten Jahren stand den Jesuiten als Kirche die Bartholomäuskapellle zur Verfügung, ab 1604 konnten sie die wieder in Stand gesetzte Johanniskirche nutzen, die ehemalige Kirche der Minoriten. Auf Dauer reichte das Raumangebot des Gotteshauses jedoch nicht aus, denn es diente zugleich auch als Gymnasial- und Univeristätskirche. Ein größerer Neubau war erforderlich. Durch schwere Erkrankung zur Ablegung eines Gelübdes zu Ehren der Jungfrau Maria und des hl. Franz Xaver veranlasst und danach genesen, erwarb Fürstbischof Ferdinand 1677 westlich des Kollegs ein Grundstück für den Neubau einer Kirche. Nachdem Verhandlungen mit dem Architekten Antonio Petrini aus Trient nicht zum Erfolg geführt hatten, wurde das Projekt dem im Kirchenbau erfahrenen Jesuitenbruder Anton Hülse übertragen. Der Bau begann 1682, war 1686 im Rohbau fertig gestellt und konnte 1692 geweiht werden. Die Innenausstattung der dreischiffigen barocken Emporenbasillika war erst 1730 mit Fertigstellung der Orgel vollendet (Altar 1696, Kanzel 1704). Der Stifter erlebte nur noch die erste Bauphase - er starb bereits 1683. Die Johanniskirche, sie stand auf dem heutigen Schulhof des Gymnasiums Theodorianum, wurde 1728 abgebrochen.

The Western Brewer December 1897
Philip Guckes, Sr., a highly esteemed citizen, and probably the oldest brewer in Philadelphia, died at his home in that city on November 10. He had always been in the best of health until twelve days before his death, when he was suddenly taken ill.
He was born on May 19, 1821, at Albig, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, and learned the trade of a brewer in his native country. In 1842 he came to America, landing in New York city on his twenty-first birthday. At first he secured employment as a gardener; but finding the brewing business more congenial, he entered the employ successively of several brewers, in New York and Philadelphia. He was one of the first to brew lager beer in the latter city, at Caspar Krauss' brewery. After this, he served for seven years with the late William C. Rudman, a well known ale and porter brewer of Philadelphia.
In the year 1850 he started in the brewing business on his own account at Front and Green streets, removing later to St. John street, above Brown street, where the business, which was established by him, is still carried on by the International B.C., incorporated in 1895. He continued as brewer for this company up to the day of his death, and was, therefore, probably the oldest active brewer in Philadelphia, if not the entire United States. He was one of the earliest members of the United States Brewers' Association, and in his younger days took an active part therein, rarely failing to be present at the annual convention. he married Sibila Schimpf, who, with three sons and daughters and twelve grandchildren, survives him.
All who knew him honored and loved him for his wisdom, his wit and his sterling integrity. He was of a sunny disposition, good natured, generous and affectionate. He had a remarkable memory, a keen relish for knowledge, was widely read in English and German literature, and preserved all his faculties intact until the hour of parting. He leaves the good he did behind him, in the kindly and fatherly advice which he gave to those who follow him, and even the least of his friends knew that they had sustained a loss when told of his death.
The funeral services were held at his late residence, Saturday, November 13, and were largely attended by his many friends and business associates. Sermons were delivered in English and German, and the employes of the brewery which he founded and was connected with for so many years, attended the body. Internment was in the family plot, Mount Vernon cemetery, the Masonic rites being performed by Harmony Lodge No. 52, A.Y.M., of which he had been a member since 1867.
