Part of the joy of macro photography is learning new facts about the focus of my lens. What a surprise to discover how long some sea urchins live.

"At its core, a sea urchin is an echinoderm, a relative of starfish, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Its most striking feature is its spherical or flattened body, encased in a rigid, calcareous shell known as a “test.” This test is covered in an array of spines, which vary dramatically in length, sharpness, and color depending on the species. These spines serve multiple purposes, offering defense against predators, aiding in locomotion, and even helping some species burrow into the substrate. With approximately 950 known species, sea urchins exhibit incredible diversity, ranging in size from a mere few centimeters to over 30 centimeters in diameter. While their exact lifespan varies by species, some deep-sea urchins have been observed to live for an astonishing 200 years or more, making them some of the longest-lived invertebrates on Earth."

Marsh mallow, (Althaea officinalis), perennial herbaceous plant of the hibiscus, or mallow, family (Malvaceae), native to eastern Europe and northern Africa. It has also become established in North America. The plant is usually found in marshy areas, chiefly near the sea. It has strongly veined heart-shaped or oval leaves. The pinkish flowers, borne on stalks about 1.8 metres (6 feet) tall, are about 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter. The root was formerly used to make marshmallows, a confection.

Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, Egyptian bean or simply lotus, is one of two extant species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae. It is often colloquially called a water lily. Under favorable circumstances the seeds of this aquatic perennial may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China. It has a very wide native distribution, ranging from central and northern India (at altitudes up to 1,400 m in the southern Himalayas), through northern Indochina and East Asia, with isolated locations at the Caspian Sea. It has a very long history (c. 3,000 years) of being cultivated for its edible seeds, and it is commonly cultivated in water gardens. It is the national flower of India and Vietnam. The roots of lotus are planted in the soil of the pond or river bottom, while the leaves float on the water's surface or are held well above it. The flowers are usually found on thick stems rising several centimeters above the leaves. The leaf stalks (petioles) can be up to 200 cm long, allowing the plant to grow in water to that depth, and a horizontal spread of 1 m. The leaves may be as large as 80 cm in diameter, while the showy flowers can be up to 30 cm in diameter. 28491

The purity of precious metals is measured in thousandths, which indicate the amount of pure precious metal that an alloy has if we divided it into 1,000 parts. Fine or pure silver has 999.9 thousandths of silver: any precious metal always contains a small amount of impurities because they are materials from nature. That is why we consider "pure" any precious metal that has at least 999.9 thousandths of every 1,000 of that metal. In contrast, sterling silver is obtained by mixing fine silver with another metal, generally pure electrolytic copper. That other metal with which we alloy a precious metal is called «the league».

Rosendael Castle is a late medieval castle, originally built by the Count of Guelders. The castle is located in the village of Rozendaal near Velp, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is part of the nationally protected historic estate of Rosendael.

The keep was originally approximately 25 meters high and has a diameter of 16 meters, making it the largest tower of its kind in the Netherlands. With walls up to 4 meters thick, the keep also boasts the thickest walls in the country. The rooms within the keep are square. Two of them are covered by barrel vaults, and the highest by a domed vault.

The castle was first mentioned in 1314, and Count Reinoud I was its first resident. His son Reinoud II was also lord of the castle.

After the counts and dukes of Guelders, the castle became the property of bailiff Willem van Scherpenzeel, who exchanged it for his Coldenhove castle in 1536. In 1579, he sold it again to Dirck van Dorth. Van Dorth had many changes made to the castle, including the creation of gardens, ponds, and streams. After Van Dorth, the estate and castle were successively owned by the Van Arnhem, Torck, and Van Pallandt families. Since 1536, the Planken Wambuis forest, heathland, and hunting area near Ede also belonged to the estate.

Under lord Lubbert Adolph Torck, who was married to the wealthy Petronella Wilhelmina van Hoorn, the gardens were redesigned in 1732, under the architecture of Daniël Marot. Among other things, the shell galleries were constructed during this period.

Of the original castle, only the keep remains. In 1722, a square house was built alongside the tower, and various outbuildings and stables were constructed. This made it more of a country house than a castle.

The gardens and ponds were renovated in the 19th century by architect Jan David Zocher Jr., who, among other things, combined several smaller ponds into one large one. The shell galleries were also renovated, and during the Van Pallandts' time, the "Bedriegertjes" (little deceivers) were built there.

In 1860, architect Lucas Hermanus Eberson designed a modification to the interior, commissioned by the couple R.J.C. van Pallandt-Torck.

After the Second World War, during which the castle was hit by an American bomb and the park was partially destroyed by a stray V-2 rocket, the estate fell into disrepair until 1977, when the last Baron Willem Frederik Torck, Baron van Pallandt, transferred it to the foundations Het Geldersch Landschap and Vrienden der Geldersche Kasteelen (The Gelderland Landscape and Friends of Gelderland Castles). The country house and garden were restored and have been partially open to the public since 1989. The Planken Wambuis estate had already been sold to an investment company in 1932.[1] Around 1985, the library, which contains some 3,000 books and manuscripts, was also restored, including those from Queen Christina of Sweden addressed to the philosopher René Descartes. Lord of the castle, Jan van Arnhem (1636-1716), collected these works at the time.

The castle and park are among the Top 100 listed by the National Heritage Agency.

Located in the area between the municipalities of San Severino, Matelica and Apiro and Gagliole; its name is linked to Mount San Vicino, which at 1479 meters is the most visible and recognizable peak of the Marche Apennine chain. Canfaito is majestic, imposing and at the same time reassuring, walking in the shade of its centuries-old beech trees is relaxing and regenerating, in every season. The largest tree in the Marche is found right in this beech forest, it has a diameter of 4.8 meters and is located shortly after the little house in the woods, not far away there is another of equally imposing dimensions.

Growing to an astonishing 6 m in diameter, Grevillea 'Poorinda Royal Mantle' is a prostrate, evergreen shrub.

It is a hybrid between Grevillea laurifolia and Grevillea willisii.

25 years ago, my father and I planted 6 of these on what I call 'the slope', an area of my gardens which I leave to its own devices and it has become a favourite area for local birdlife and other fauna. These plants have not disappointed in regard the area of ground covered, spilling down the slope just like a mantle and at this time of year, the mass display of their flowers is truly quite incredible.

The leaves vary in shape, some are lobed and others have smooth margins and are quite leathery in texture.

The purple-red-pink flowers can be seen from late winter, through spring in toothbrush type clusters at the end the short branchlets.

Othonna capensis also known as little pickles, is a species of the genus Othonna and family Asteraceae, and is a native of South Africa.

Flower about 20mm, 3/4", in diameter.

Malus sylvestris, the European crab apple, also known as the European wild apple or simply the crab apple, is a species of the genus Malus, native to Europe and western Asia. Its scientific name means "forest apple"

The wild apple is a deciduous small to medium-sized tree, but can also grow into a multi-stemmed bush. It can live 80–100 years and grow up to 14 metres (46 feet) tall with trunk diameters of usually 23–45 centimetres (9–17+1⁄2 inches), although diameters exceeding 90 centimetres (35 in) have been recorded. The leaves are roundish-oval and sometimes hairy on the underside. The hermaphrodite flowers appear in May, slightly preceding hawthorn, have white or pinkish petals and are insect-pollinated. The small pome-fruits are around 3 centimetres (1.2 in) in diameter, ripen in autumn and fall to the ground. The bark is light brown and breaks up in flakes. The branches are thorny, especially in response to pruning or browsing.

In the past M. sylvestris was thought to be the most important ancestor of the cultivated apple (M. domestica), which has since been shown to have been primarily derived from the central Asian species M. sieversii. However, DNA analyses confirm that M. sylvestris has contributed significantly to the genome. They found that secondary introgression from other species of the genus Malus has greatly shaped the genome of M. domestica, with M. sylvestris being the largest secondary contributor. They also found that current populations of M. domestica are more closely related to M. sylvestris than to M. sieversii. However, in more pure strains of M. domestica, the M. sieversii ancestry still predominates.

Architecte : Louis Marie Cordonnier.

longueur : 104 m ;

largeur du transept : 45 m ;

largeur de la nef : 30 m ;

hauteur du dôme : 97 m ;

diamètre du dôme : 28 m ;

hauteur de la coupole : 50 m ;

la croix monolithe surmontant l'ensemble mesure 1,70 m et pèse près d'une tonne ;

hauteur des voûtes : 37 m ;

superficie : 4 500 m2.

It was while looking at the beautiful photos of my Flickr friend Thierry Musette that we decided to stop there on our way to Brittany.

It was built in honor of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus shortly after her canonization.

An imposing Neo-Byzantine style building inspired by the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre, its construction, on a hill overlooking the city, began in 1929 and it was consecrated in 1954. Today, the building welcomes more than 600,000 visitors a year.

Architect: Louis Marie Cordonnier.

Preceded by a vast forecourt that leaves a 76-meter-wide open space in front of the staircase leading to its main entrance, the monument sits on a hill, on the edge of the city, which it dominates with its imposing mass. It is one of the largest churches built in the 20th century.

In a composite style (known as Romano-Byzantine), the basilica's architecture is strongly inspired by that of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre, Paris. Constructed of reinforced concrete and Bleu de Vire granite, the building can accommodate 3,000 people and is comparable in size to the largest cathedrals:

length: 104 m;

transept width: 45 m;

nave width: 30 m;

dome height: 97 m;

dome diameter: 28 m;

cupola height: 50 m;

the monolithic cross surmounting the structure measures 1.70 m and weighs nearly a ton;

vault height: 37 m;

area: 4,500 m².

Given the nature of the soil, which is clayey to a depth of thirty meters, and its location on the slope of a hill, the foundations of the building rest on 130 cylindrical pillars of varying diameters (from 1.4 to 5 m) reaching the level of the underlying limestone layer in order to establish its stability.

In the interim, more aboit Leucospermom, Pom Pom / Pincushion flowers. Leucospermum species mostly have seated, simple, mostly leathery, often softly hairy leaves, set in a spiral, with entire margins or more often, with 3–17 blunt teeth with thickened, bony tips, and without stipules at their foot. The flowers are organised with many together in heads with bracts on the under- or outside.

Most pincushions are upright shrubs or even small trees of 1–5 m (3.3–16.4 ft) high, that usually have a single main stem. Some species however only have trailing branches and can form low mats, 1–5 m (3.3–16.4 ft) in diameter. Yet another set of species grow several stems directly from a rootstock in the ground. This is an important character in distinguishing between some species.

The greater blue-ringed octopus is despite its vernacular name a small octopus whose size does not exceed 10 centimeters, arms included, for an average weight of 80 grams. Its common name comes from the relatively large size of its blue ring (7 to 8 millimeters in diameter), so they are indeed larger than those of the other members of the genus and help to distinguish them. The head is slightly flattened dorsoventrally and finished in a tip. Its height arms are short.The coloration of this octopus varies with the circumstances and the ambient environment from yellow ocher to light brown through whitish (when inactive). The blue rings are about 60, spread throughout the entire animal's coat. The rings are roughly circular and are based on a darker blotch than the background color of the coat. A black line, whose thickness can vary to increase the contrast and be more visible, borders the electric blue circles. The blue rings are an aposematic adornment whose purpose is to clearly show to all potential predators that this octopus is highly poisonous. Found in Anilao, South Luzon, Philippines.

"Kousa Dogwood berries are small fruits, averaging 2 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The fruits are a type of drupe, comprised of 20 to 40 individual carpels that fuse to form a spherical appearance.

The surface also ripens from green to orange-red or red-purple and has a gritty and grainy feel with a bitter, astringent taste, making it somewhat unpleasant to consume. Underneath the skin, the bright orange-yellow flesh has a slippery, lightly mealy, sticky, custard-like consistency.

The flesh has a sweet, tropical, and earthy taste with a unique blend of pumpkin, mango, and persimmon-like nuances."

With diameter of about 100m and 40m height, Buddhanath holds its place among the largest stupas in the world. The Buddhanath stupa covers a vast area. It has a round path at the bottom while another path is made of three-tier plinth.

The stupa resembles Swayambhunath stupa to some extent. Although similar in design to its smaller counterpart, Swayambhu, Boudha has a rounded top to its dome whereas Swayambhu's is flat.

Look where's taken

Its fruits are small fleshy berries containing between 1 and 4 seeds. As they develop they turn from green to black, and then become orange when ripe. The berries are eaten by birds (e.g. Onychognatus species) and thereby dispersed. The seeds are 4–5 mm in diameter and weigh on average 68 mg.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. This is for a friend who loves pink and magenta.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the large flowers which are 8mm, their sequin cup centres which are 4mm and the small flowers which are 3mm and very fiddly. The large flowers are vintage sequins, and both the large flowers and their central cups are French. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flowers and stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Santa Ynez Canyon

These mushrooms were growing in moss on a rock. From a distance they looked like small white dots. Most measured about 1/4 inch in diameter. They would be very easy to overlook
