Summer Painting Project 2021.

Acrylic on Canvas. 13" in Diameter.

The very best thing that came out of Lockdown for me was returning to painting after a 15 year hiatus. I started back at it in the Summer of 2020 and continued on with it in '21. I can only paint outdoors for a variety of reasons so this work is my "summer project". With a lot more time on my hands it was easy to jump outside on my balcony "studio", fitted with a giant drop sheet, some newspaper and plastic covered patio tables, and get right to it.

These paintings are improvised one the colours have been chosen the sequence of application has been decided. Once this one started to settle into a form I liked very quickly the scene from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings at The Bridge of Khazad-dum came to mind. I went with it.

***** I want to thank Paul Ewing, Bramdass, Miranda Murray, Tim Noonan and Bill Smith for their continuous support and encouragement to get these things posted to Flickr.

#OnACoin

Diameter of the coin: 2,7 cm / 1,06 inches

Oh dear, oh dear... What a journey. Actually I wanted to skip, because I really had no idea what to put on a coin that would even remotely make sense. I knew which coin I wanted to use, yes, but... However, as I rummaged through my drawers in search of something small that would go well with my coin of choice, I stumbled upon a few larger pins. Immediately one of those tourist or underground station city maps that depict your current location ("You are here") came to my mind. Since the coin shows a kind of map of Europe and Africa (and also the planets of our solar system), my original idea was to put the pin approximately where Berlin/Germany would be on that "map". But how should I fixate a metal pin on a metal coin? Glue? Didn't work. Modeling clay? But how should I hide the modeling clay? And how should I position the pin so that it wouldn't cover most of the "map"? By the time I had figured out how to do it (I "glued" the pin onto the coin's blue polymer ring with a small piece of blue modeling clay, at an angle that would let you see the map, too, while hiding the modeling clay), it was evening, and I didn't feel like shooting any more. There was a movie I wanted to watch on TV, and I was fed up with coins and pins in general ;-) I decided to continue the next day.

No sooner said than done. And easier said than done, too. On Monday, I placed the coin and pin on a small glass table and my tablet under the glass table. I opened Google Maps and chose a satellite view of North and South America (the Panama Canal region, simply because it looked nice as background). Numerous focus stacking / Helicon focus attempts followed. When I checked the time I realised that it already was four o'clock in the afternoon and I still had to write my description and tags. So I quickly had to choose one of the photos, and process it. Which is what you see here. Sigh.

Now for the coin itself: It is a 5 Euro collector's coin ("Blauer Planet Erde" - "Blue Planet Earth"), and it also is legal tender (in Germany only, however), officially issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank / the Federal Government (link: www.bundesbank.de/en/tasks/cash-management/euro-coins/col...). Not that I would like to use it as means of payment, since I have hopes that it will make me rich one day (hopeless now that I have scratched its valuable surface with a pin) ;-)

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, stay safe and well!

The pinkish flowers, borne on stalks about 1.8 metres (6 feet) tall, are about 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter. The root was formerly used to make marshmallows, a confection.

Hymenocallis littoralis or the beach spider lily is native to warmer coastal regions of Latin America and widely cultivated and naturalized in many tropical countries.

Hymenocallis littoralis is a bulbous perennial herb. It ranges in height from 60–70 cm (24-28 inches). The bulb is 7–10 cm (3-4 inches) in diameter. With age, the bulb develops a neck that reaches 4–5 cm in diameter (up to 2 inches). The flowers are large, white, vanilla scented, and sessile. The tepals are adnate (attached to) the staminal cup. Each flower's tube is 14 to 17 cm (5 to 7 inches) long or longer.

Juniper berries or 'coccole,' with a diameter that varies between 4-7 millimetres, is widely used both in cooking and in liqueur making. In cooking they are an indispensable flavouring for the game and, often, for various roasts. Distillates are the characterizing ingredient of gin, aromatic wines and liqueurs are also obtained from them and a juniper grappa, leaving a handful of berries to infuse in the grappa.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. In this case they are for a friend, who likes red and gold as a colour scheme.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the snowflakes which are 12mm in diameter. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the snowflakes until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

This tiny weed flower measures 1/4" in diameter...not the center portion, but from open petal tip to open petal tip across the widest diameter is only one quarter of an inch!

A highlight of spring in Yosemite Valley is the western dogwood.

Growing to an astonishing 6 m in diameter, Grevillea 'Poorinda Royal Mantle' is a prostrate, evergreen shrub.

It is a hybrid between Grevillea laurifolia and Grevillea willisii.

25 years ago, my father and I planted 6 of these on what I call 'the slope', an area of my gardens which I leave to its own devices and it has become a favourite area for local birdlife and other fauna. These plants have not disappointed in regard the area of ground covered, spilling down the slope just like a mantle and at this time of year, the mass display of their flowers is truly quite incredible.

The leaves vary in shape, some are lobed and others have smooth margins and are quite leathery in texture.

The purple-red-pink flowers can be seen from late winter, through spring in toothbrush type clusters at the end the short branchlets.

The stones featured are part a smaller irregular stone circle adjacent to the large one. This stone circle has a sub-oval plan with a maximum diameter of 35m. It contains seven large standing stones with dimensions of between 1.5m and 2m high and 0.75m-1.5m thick. All together at this complex there are three stone circles, two stone avenues and a cove.
