iss067e183734 (July 8, 2022) --- Expedition 67 Flight Engineer and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti wears a microphone on her right shoulder for the Acoustic Diagnostics study. The investigation explores whether equipment noise levels and the microgravity environment may create possible adverse effects on astronaut hearing. The acoustic data will help researchers understand the International Space Station’s sound environment and may inform countermeasures to protect crew hearing.

Kecila Rul earns a living on Tatooine as a Podracer mechanic. It's a tough living sure: hot, oily and often dangerous. Still, for him it sure beats being a moisture farmer, having the constant threat of Tusken Raider attack day and night. At least in the larger settlements there was relative safety in the crowd. Inbetween Podraces, his boss, Deq Vu Vurt, earns a few extra credits hiring out his pod for joyrides from visiting offworlders. So there's always steady work for Kecila and his pit droids.

Space Agency ASI’s Acoustic Diagnostics experiment aboard the International Space Station.
This experiment uses special headphones containing a small device that records the response of the inner ear to study the effect of microgravity and background noise on astronaut hearing. Detecting hearing loss in space will both help take care of astronauts’ health during long missions and improve a device for testing hearing more accurately in any noisy environment on Earth.

A diagnostic feature of Grey Plover is black armpits, but they are usually only visible in flight. This individual obligingly flashed its armpits for this photo. Grey Plovers breed on low tundra around the high Arctic. In America this same species is known as Black-bellied Plover as in breeding plumage the black is more extensive and striking than on Golden Plovers. But even in America most birders see them in grey winter plumage, so Black-armpitted Plover would be more appropriate. And incidentally, the proper term for armpits is axillaries, so most bird books describe them as having black axillaries. They winter around the coasts of every continent where it does not freeze in winter, but are often at quite low density. I often hear their characteristic call before I see them (listen to it here): www.xeno-canto.org/678452 Peak numbers in Britain occur in autumn decreasing to a plateau in winter suggesting that many birds stop off en route to other wintering areas. The number wintering in Britain is about 34,000, compared with about 400,000 Golden Plover. But many Golden Plovers spend the winter on farmland as well as estuaries, whereas Grey Plovers are very rare away from the coast. The scientific name is Pluvialis squatarola, given by Linnaeus from a Venetian name for a type of Plover (Sgatarola). In the first bird book in English (1678) John Ray called it the Squatarola or Grey Plover, and that name has been with us ever since. Unlike most shorebirds in winter, they don't flock with their own kind, but you see odd ones scattered thinly on muddy and sandy shores. I don't find them easy to photograph as they are often miles away on the mudflats, but I took this one roosting on rocks at high tide on the Northumberland coast.

Diagnostic features: small size, short pronotum with sharply indented side keels, clubbed antennae (male), thickened antennae (female). Colour & pattern variable, but usually 'busy' with multi-coloured stripes & blotches. Like the field grasshopper, males have red colouration on the abdomen, but are much smaller & the clubbed antennae are distinctive.
The main picture was taken at The Ercall, Shrops, in 2007 with my first digital camera, a 6mp Sony H2 superzoom. It is still the best shot I've taken of the male's antennae.
