Diagnostic Long-tailed Jaeger, Stercorarius longicaudus pallescens, 15 in / 38.1 cm. UNCOMMON to RARE, but we saw lots of them on Arctic Tundra, nesting in loose colonies, once spotting about 30 in a group, some on the road. Photographed through the vehicle window and the rain.

Diagnostic Male Red-headed Bluebill, Seermophaga ruficapilla ruficapilla, 14cm. / 5.5in. Locally COMMON in forest, secondary growth and moist thickets. Not eating berries, those are the bill colors.

Diagnostic Black-faced Spoonbill, Platalea minor, 73.5 cm. / 28.9 in. RARE visitor to freshwater marshes and coastal mudflats. With the bill tucked along its back, you can see the black face covering the eye.

Diagnostic Pelagis Cormorant, Urile pelagicus pelagicus, 73 cm. / 28.7 in. WS: 98 cm. / 38.6 in. Locally COMMON resident on rocky coasts. It was very windy, cold and rain was falling sideways, we were sheltering in the leeward side of the lighthouse.

I pass this structure at times. However, with a stormy day Saturday I took a few images of this building. When converted into black and white, the drama came out! Plus kudos to the groundskeepers for giving me leading lines!

The Hungarian State Railways had a total of 20 NOHABs in its fleet. These engines quickly became iconic since these were pretty much the only railway equipment in the socialist country which arrived from outside of the Iron Curtain. Their active career ended in the early 2000s at MÁV, 6 units got to live a happy retirement at various private companies and foundations.
Number 17 stayed the closest to the national carrier; it belongs to the infrastructure maintenance subsidiary of the company. Interestingly, it also got modified a bit to be better suited for such works: it received an electrical train heating generator (originally NOHABs had steam train heating), and the mechanics modified the gear ratios, so it can reach a whopping 120 km/h top speed instead of the factory-default 105.
Not that they made good use of that today: railway line 142 is a disgrace amongst the Hungarian lines from a track-condition point of view. From Kőbánya-Kispest to Lajosmizse the single-track line is officially rated for 60 km/h speeds, but for more than a decade, there has been a 40 km/h "temporary" restriction in effect on the most often used, suburban part of the line.
I wonder what kind of result did the measurements yield... There is an age-old story about another track diagnostics unit automatically engaging the emergency brakes during recording measurements on the H8 suburban line. Why? The track conditions were so bad, the diagnostics unit actually "thought" it got derailed :)

This experiment uses special headphones containing a small device that records the response of the inner ear to study the effect of microgravity and background noise on astronaut hearing. Detecting hearing loss in space will both help take care of astronauts’ health during long missions and improve a device for testing hearing more accurately in any noisy environment on Earth.

Made during the late afternoon when the temperature in sunnier, unshaded areas was still uncomfortably high. I was just enjoying the spectacle of various dragonfly species flying along the edge of a wood and some dense vegetation when this female SC alighted on a grass stem close to where I sat. Cue to swap binoculars for camera, get down low and attempt some shots.

I was pleased that both sexes of this Grosbeak paid a visit to our created bird oasis. In NM they prefer this cool high altitude (8600 ft. msl) region. Like for many female birds this lady pales in comparison to her more gaudy mate. As females birds go, however, she is strikingly marked, and her ID can be readily established with high confidence. Her bill shape is diagnostic for the Grosbeak family, and there are not that many different species of Grosbeaks in North America. Only three can be expected up here. It you can see the greenish tint on the bills of adult birds (like on this lady) you have a lock on the species ID... it's that unique.

As these places go the University Diagnostic Center in Tampa is nicely appointed.
The receptionist was very good with the Trumpster who loudly complained that wearing a mask in a medical facility was "overkill" and the usual crap about the whole corona thing being just a lie to make his hero look bad. Scary times.

Another sighting of a fresh, near pristine dragonfly!
Again, I think this female may have only emerged on the day that the image was made. I refer to her as 'near pristine' as she had a noticeable dent in a segment at the side of her abdomen.

This was the first time I had ever encountered a Scarce Chaser so I could easily overlook her imperfection! By using a slow approach I was able to take a lot of shots. She proved an obliging subject, (although rubbish at choosing great perches!) This unphotogenic dead vegetation was in the middle of a huge nettle patch! Manoeuvering with the camera was awkward and painful, so I regard the resulting images as only passable record shots.
PS: I can easily overlook her poor taste in perches now, as the good thing about 'record shots' is that they instill me with a firm resolve to do better....roll on next summer

thought to be a hybrid between Yellowlegs & Dowitchers
Guide books still refer to some blended similarities and helpful features in common to these aforementioned species but DNA and other studies have shown STSA is indeed a unique species
Diagnostic Rhinoceros Auklet, Cerorhinca monocerata, 38 cm. / 15 in. COMMON resident on offshore waters. Breeds on islands off Hokkaido and northern Honshu. Around 300 birds flew by offshore of the point. Very windy, chilly and wet so we took shelter in the leeward side of the lighthouse.

Père David's Rock Squirrel (Sciurotamias davidianus) is endemic to central China, which means it is found nowhere else. Unlike most squirrels, it doesn't seem to like trees, but spends most of its time among rocks, where it builds dens. It does look similar to a number of tree squirrels in that area but its diagnostic feature is the pale eye-ring. It gathers nuts and seeds from below trees, and is particularly fond of the large acorns from the Oak (Quercus liaotungensis), which is what it is scurrying to hide here. It reminds me a bit of the character Scrat from the Ice Age films, that spends most of its time trying and failing to cache its precious acorn. It is a bit smaller than a European Red Squirrel and was named after Père Armand David (1826-1900), the French Missionary and naturalist who spent most of his time in China, describing dozens of new animals and plants.
