Rakher Upobash is a Hindu festival of lights, faith and devotion. It is also known as Kartik Brati. The festival is celebrated in the month of Kartik, which usually falls in November. Hindu worshipers fast and pray in the earnest to the Gods for their favors during the traditional ritual.

Images of the Holy Family were popular for domestic interiors of Renaissance Italy. There, they served as expressions of Christian devotion and the importance of family. In this example, the Virgin Mary holds infant Christ on her lap while Saint Joseph, Mary’s husband and Christ’s earthly father, stands behind. The Virgin tenderly rests on her hand on the head of her nephew, the infant John the Baptist, who is humbly presented by his father, Zacharias. With their reverent gestures and contemplative expressions, the figures probably served as examples of model devotional behavior to which the family who hung the picture in their home would have aspired. Francesco Rizzo da Santacroce, to whom this painting is usually attributed, was part of a large family workshop in 16th-century Venice that produced many such images for the city’s burgeoning middle class. Cropped this close, these two could almost pass as a couple. I get a sense of love from them.
And it is love, in a way, just not the romantic variety. This is the Fisher angel, standing protectively behind a maiden, whether she is a mourner or the dearly departed, guiding her on the last step of her journey.

Acrylic painting depicting an alien Madonna & Child. The baby is wearing a crown of leaves and rhinestones. This mother has a pyramid in her jewelry reflecting she has been here since the days of the Egyptian Empire. The flower background represents nature and our connection to it. The grey in her hair symbolizes her old soul which has lived through l00's of lifetimes.
Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and arts, represents the free flow of wisdom and consciousness. She is the mother of the Vedas, and chants to her, called the 'Saraswati Vandana' often begin and end Vedic lessons.
Saraswati's birthday - Vasant Panchami - is a Hindu festival celebrated every year on the 5th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha. Hindus celebrate this festival with great fervor in temples, homes and educational institutes alike.

This particular cow roams around Bambalapitty, Havelock Town and Wellawatte. People in these areas identify it as “Mayurapathy Cow”.
24th Annual Chariot festival of Sri Mayurapathy Paththirakaali temple is held today (6th of August 2011) in Colombo amidst heavy downpour. Five wooden carved chariots parade through the streets of Bambalapitty (Colombo 04), Havelock Town (Colombo 05) and Wellawatte (Colombo 06).
Devotees dressed elegantly and took part in religious rituals such as carrying clay pots of camphor, rolling themselves on the ground, smashing coconuts and hanging on hooks (Kaavadi ~ Men only). Few devotees who fulfill their vows, got into trance and danced on the streets. Devotional songs played throughout the dazzling parade. Traditional and non ~ traditional musical instruments added colour to the festival.
I missed the moment a nun was waving him goodbye. It was good to see that, really.
