Krishna devotees celebrate St Patrick's day

My favourite image of the day ;-}}

It was lovely to see such a diverse range of cultures and faiths embracing the spirit of St Patrick's day.

I've been going to the Rathayatra festival in Brighton for the last three years. The vivid coloured saris, the sounds of the hare krishna chant and the genuine welcoming of visitors take some beating. But I have to say the London Hare Krishna devotees dressed as Leprechauns and jigging along the road definitely won the day for me.

An elderly devotee comes out of the sanctum sanctorum of Vaikunta Perumal temple of Kancheepuram after applying the vermillion on her forehead.

This is an 8th century temple built by Pallava king Nandivarman II. The corridors of the temple are designed uniquely filled with bas relief on the inner walls. You can see them behind those lion pillars. This temple is a must see in Kancheepuram.

Lady spent much time through the night of Buddha's birthday, lighting candles for tourists, visitors, other devotees. Likely this represented numerous offerings for the evening.

In Buddhism, a lantern is used to symbolize wisdom, liberation, compassion, proper behavior, and rebirth. Its significance can be easily discerned from the fact that the humble act of lighting a lantern on a Buddhist altar was regarded as the most noble form of an offering to the Buddha.

Woke up from sleep at about 4am, and managed to drive myself and two other friends to Batu Caves in good time. We then met with the rest of our gang and proceeded to take photos of the massively colorful and human festival that is known here as Thaipusam. Facing the crowd was a challenging task, and to become a part of it while concentrating on framing the shots was an extremely rewarding experience. This is something I shall definitely be doing again :)

And a very big thanks to Visithra for her help in organizing the meetup!

A bit of info about it (from a wikipedia entry):

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival that commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer and fasting. On the day of the festival, devotees will shave their heads and undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, notably carrying various types of kavadi (burdens). At its simplest, this may entail carrying a pot of milk, but mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is also common.
