St Thomas School Fete fun.

We positioned ourselves under an old tree which sheltered us from the rain and the hot sun (yes there was both!) and hung postcards of book covers and the Summer Reading Challenge from the branches along with some bunting.

I managed to do a presentation on stage for a very chuffed Book Tracker winner also advertising how brilliant our library service was, of course.

RADIO EXE mentioned the library several times throughout the day and our competition 'Spot the Spider' (a grid based game) went down a storm. About 130 odd people had a go (adults and kids)! The biggest pull was that it was FREE and you could win something. Oh and the sweets on the table helped too.

Anyway I believe over 350 people that day must have seen or heard something about the St Thomas Library, which we are happy with.

Children enjoyed stories, milk and cookies and then said 'Goodnight' to their soft toys. The bears got up to all sorts of mischief before falling asleep.

Reading Cafe at Axminster Library

Every Thursday 2-4pm during the summer holidays we held a Reading Cafe at Axminster Library. Reading cafes have been used in school libraries but to our knowledge they are not common in public libraries. The idea behind them is to encourage children and their parents to read together, and then to treat the family to tea and cake.

We literally turned half of our small library into a cafe. Volunteer borrowers made cake and manned the kitchen while our Reading Activists waited and maitre d’ed.

Since we were linking the Reading Cafe to the SRC, we had a Lego table for making a Lego maze and each week we had activities linked to a different Mythical Maze character. Our favourites were a golden thread maze made out of masking tape on the carpet and making our Yeti happy with snowflakes and tins of spaghetti. One week we also made smoothies and another we made a big reading den with a maze corridor made out of cardboard boxes.

The emphasis throughout however remained on books and reading with our Reading Activists chatting to young borrowers about books and what to read next for their Summer Reading Challenge. Since we had over 200 young borrowers from ten local primary schools, we also ran an Inter-Schools Challenge: the school with the most finishers will win a prize for the school. The children have loved the competition.

Our nine Reading Activists set up a twitter account – AxReadingActivists – where you can see the photos they took and posted of the Reading Cafe. There are also photos on Flickr.
