A picture from Richard Garriott's collection of trepanning devices. So glad I am living in the 21st century!

His description:

The box here holds a blood letting kit. It has a silver tool that is the size of a shot glass that you wind up and fire while it is held against your skin making a horrific wound. Then you place one of the 12 glass cups over it and use the vacuum pump to suck out blood. You do this on 12 areas of your body at the same time. This cure was likely worse than what illness you had.

The smaller device you see proped up against the back of the box is a trepanning tool. It is used to drill a hole through your skull. Trepanning was actually fairly common and some form of it goes back to pre-history! When people had ongoing head aches and other head pains, they might drill these holes to releave the perceived pressure. Oddly in some cases it worked and it was in fact common to survive this proceedure!

An Astrum (Svema, Свема) oto 400 film with my French range-finder camera Foca PF2B (year 1956) for a neighboring photo walk in Lyon, France, on December 14, 2022.

The Astrum (Svema, Свема) oto 400 is a super panchromatic film on a polyester flat base and with an extended sensitization in the red to 780 nm. The film was exposed for 400 ISO using a Minolta Autometer III and its 10° finder for selective measurements.

Typically the expositions ranged from 1/1000s at full aperture to 1/50s at f/9.5 by a very cloudy and quite dark weather of December in France.

Rure Grognard, December 14, 2022

France

After exposures the film was processed using Adox Atomal (equivalent to Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25, 20°C for 10min. The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body fitted to a Minolta Slide Duplicator installed on a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5.

All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg. The negative views are highly contrasted despite the weather. The last 10 views of the film have emulsion damages due to unknown film problems, increasing the apparent granularity and presenting darker zones, maybe a chemical reaction du to the adhesive used to fix the film to the canister roll. The film has no index marks on the side, and was indicated to processed before Oct. 2022. As for the Agfa Aviphot 400 (Rollei Retro 400S) the film is backed with a water-soluble anti halation coat that need to be removed prior to development. Three bathes of 1min with water at the same development temperature was necessary to remove the black and dark blue layer.

About the camera :

The Foca type PF2B (PF standing for "Petit Format") was constructed in France by the company "Optique & Precision de Levallois" (OPL) starting from 1947. This exemplary was manufactured in the Chateaudun OPL factory, route de Jallans, France, in 1956 among a late series of the PF2B. The factory, constructed in 1938 is still there under the name of SAFRAN now producing precision devices for aerospace appliances.

The camera is equipped with the collapsible OPLAR lens (a Tessar formula) 1:2.8 f=5cm giving a typical swirly bokeh. The focal shutter of the PF2B has timing of 1/1000, 1/500, 1/200, 1/100, 1/50 and 1/25s plus the B pose. A slow exposure device below 1/25s could be installed by the aftermarket service and was installed in series for the FOCA PF3 type.

IdemoLab, DELTA joined forces with KEA's Jewellery Design program and Wearable Technologies in collaboration to create 'Meaningful Jewellery' for their wearable technology project, and to host the Wearable Tech Global Picnic.

At the event "Jewellery of Tomorrow", KEA students from all semesters exhibited their projects (Meaningful Jewellery, Mixed Media, and Portfolio). The Meaningful Jewellery Devices class was part of a collaboration between Vanessa Julia Carpenter of IdemoLab, DELTA and Petra Ahde-Deal of KEA. Vanessa is exploring the Design of Meaningful Smart Devices and introduced to the class how to work with hardware and think about creating non-screen, tangible, embedded interactive devices which create value and are meaningful in people's lives.

In the coming decade, wearable technology will touch nearly every aspect of our lives. The jewellery students from KEA shared their 8-week journey in creating meaningful jewellery devices and their functional prototypes. Understanding the functionalities of different sensors and using the knowledge of design thinking and user experience, the functional jewellery prototypes are the nexus of design, innovation, imagination and function.

The owner of this semi-portable knife sharpening machine didn't want

me to take a picture, at first. (I asked, he said no.) Then I chatted

him up a bit in the best Spanish I could (not knowing at the time the

words for knife or sharpen) and told him about how I sharpen my

knives by hand on a whetstone. He knew, from my gestures, exactly

what I was saying, and warmed right up, and asked me to take a pic of

this.

This Fisher Compact Disk Car Cassette Adapter is what I used in my previous car to play a CD through my car stereo (which had a cassette player). Insert the cassette into the cassette player, stick the plug into a socket on a portable CD player, and you're all set. I was going to put this in the "Gone but not forgotten" set, but realized that I want to forget about audio cassettes. I threw this thing away. Good riddance.

The Improvised Explosive Device Battle Drill (IEDBD) simulator is seen after being hit by a simulated IED explosion during an exercise at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Va. Thursday, January 7, 2010. Trainees inside the up-armored Humvee who fail to identify insurgent threats and IED's are treated to a simulated explosion of up to 4G's of force and 60 degrees of movement. Well, I'm dusting off this original Squeezebox to stream music from my NAS, as an alternate source to CD for my workshop system. Not expected to be 'serious' hifi. Challenge will be presenting the data over ethernet to the Squeezebox in a way it can handle. I think the Squeezebox predates UPnP and DLNA.
