Slobozia Mare, Moldova
Many inhabitants of Slobozia Mare, a village located in southern Moldova, make a living breeding poultry and cultivating vegetables. The long distance from any water source has always been a major issue. Eight out of ten villagers have access to a tap system, but the water quality is worrisome. Rusty pipes make water undrinkable.
In Slobozia Mare, residents and migrants abroad gradually joined forces to form a Home Town Association, now an officially registered NGO. Over 200,000 people from 5 cities and 18 villages in Moldova have benefited from the Migration and Local Development project, implemented by UNDP in Moldova with funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The project aims to improve local infrastructure and living conditions. It brings together residents and migrants of villages to prioritize the main issues facing their communities, and helps connect them to municipalities and international donors to help them solve the issues. Nearly US$800,000 has been invested so far. Out of this amount, approximately $118,000 represent crowdfunding efforts by Moldovan migrants living abroad. Another $214,000 were provided by local authorities and $460,000 by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

A celebration of the corner shop from the stories of the families behind the counter and the customers in front.
The corner shop is a vital aspect of British heritage that has been shared by many cultural groups, owned and run by members of different communities. It is a shared landmark and - in the light of its decline – its continued existence on our streets, in the face of the increasing threat from the all-conquering supermarket, becomes a shared struggle.
In 2008, Black Country Touring collected memories, photographs and documents of shopkeepers, their families and customers of the shops in the Black Country, ranging from traditional English to South Asian to Iranian. Using this material as a starting point, Foursight Theatre created a new theatre production, supported by volunteers from the local community.
The production took place in a disused shop unit in central West Bromwich in September - October 2008, immediately opposite the building site for a well-known supermarket chain's next mammoth development. The audience promenaded around the shop while the performance took place around them. With performers behind the counter and exhibits on the shelves, the whole environment served as a battlecry on behalf of the Black Country’s corner shop community and gave life to their stories.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Army Brig. Gen. Francisco Espaillat, commanding general of the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) conducted an officer professional development brief for Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets April 9, 2015 at the University of Central Florida.
The officers in training listened
attentively to Espaillat as he gave his perspective on leadership, command, and officer expectations. They also heard him provide an overview of the
143d ESC mission and structure as well as heard him stress the importance of living and internalizing the Army Values. The Fighting Knights Battalion
at UCF is not only one of the best ROTC programs in the county, it is also one of the country's largest ROTC programs with close to 220 cadets.

In recognition of Coney Island’s newest amusement park opening Memorial Weekend, we’re hosting a benefit preview screening of JL Aronson’s upcoming documentary, Last Summer at Coney Island. We will screen a 93 minute fine cut version of the documentary. The film will be going to festivals soon but needs to raise money first to pay for all the archival imagery and music licensing. Last Summer is a thorough rendering of Coney Island’s roller coaster relationship with redevelopment, focusing on the last few years as the City, a private developer and the public all wrestled over the future of this legendary amusement destination. This is an important film about an important place and what better weekend to support it?
JL Aronson is the founder of Creative Arson, a Brooklyn-based documentary production company. His films include “Punk Rock/ Heavy Metal Karaoke,” “Up on the Roof,” and “Danielson: a Family Movie,” for which he won numerous film festival awards. JL first got involved in Coney Island professionally almost ten years ago while working for the Siren Music Festival and subsequently directed a TV commercial for Astroland Amusement Park. He enjoys funnel cakes, long walks on the beach and hopes that, if nothing else, the revamped Coney Island will offer soy hot dogs alongside the classic fare.
We are welcoming back, JL Aronson whose documentary highlights Williamsburg pigeon coops, Up On the Roof, and screened with us last year.
