This campus is currently being developed and the project is somewhat behind schedule.
The Central & East Quads for the DIT Grangegorman campus will accommodate academic activities and facilities required for a total of ten schools from the College of Sciences & Health, College of Engineering & Built Environment and the College of Arts & Tourism. These schools and their associated academic, teaching and specialist facilities will be grouped within the Central Quad to maximise the benefits and efficiencies to DIT from locating together related disciplines and functions.
TREE HAZARD REMOVAL. To all of our dismay, this great 150+ year old Ponderosa Pine developed a new crack through the base of the trunk this late winter - probably from the same storm that took down a deceptively healthy-looking pine in Robie Creek Park which in fact had significant root rot. This Mores Creek pine had been monitored for years and the new crack visible this year was the straw that broke the camels back.
The Mores pine had suffered damage from high water events on Mores Creek which over the years had deposited debris against the upstream face of the trunk and injured it. This damage was exacerbated by the repeated visitor hatchet work, lantern burns, trash bag nails, stapled signs and other offensive handy work.
The Project cored the base of the tree and found only 17' of good wood until the finding a rotten core. The tree is 60" in diameter, meaning more than have the structural support of the tree was gone. The tree was missing 180 degrees of bark as well.
Reluctantly, the Project removed the tree as its natural falling was imminent and the tree towered above a developed recreation area. It is difficult to predict the loss of life or property damage from a natural falling event - pulled high voltage power lines, Robie Creek Road blockage, destroyed restroom facility, threats to human safety such as parked cars, waders, and day users, and stream blockage with associated stream diversion/flooding and possible damage to Robie Creek Road embankment.
The stump will remain as removing it would pose harm to the remaining large pine. It may also serve as a reminder to many the irreparable harm which can be caused by the seemingly smallest injuries to tree trunks.

I developed my drawings and research into samples. The sample on the top left was made using bondaweb to attach dog treat wrappers onto lace, to form the word walkies which is recognised by my dog. I also stitched into these to make sure they were on securely. I then hand embroidered the shape of my dog's favourite toy and to embellish this further I added some beads to the centre of the flowers on the lace within the toy.
The second sample of the top right was made using the tjap technique. I printed the shape of paw prints using wax onto polycotton and then used batik paint to add colour to the background: leaving the shapes of the paw prints in white. I embellished this sample using beads, and showed the change in colour of the background through the way I beaded the paw prints.
The bottom left sample was made by trapping wool, dog treat wrappers and wrapping paper in a plastic pocket. I cut the wrappers into shapes which represented my dog to make it more interesting and then embellished it further by adding zig zag stitch to the wool and embroidery and beading to the paw and bone shapes.
The forth sample was made by printing off a collage of pictures of my dog and the Dogs Trust we rehomed him from. I then transferred this onto polycotton and quilted it by using zig zag stitching around the pictures in different colours to frame them. I also used free embroidery to stitch into the pictures to show the scruffy effect of his hair.
