The city of Nankana Sahib is very near to Sheikhupura and is of great historic and religious importance to Sikh community. Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh faith, was born here in 1469 and therefore the city was renamed to Nankana after him. The grand gurdwara is called Nanak's Ayan Janam Asthan' (Birth place of Nanak). The first thing to be noticed when entering the city was the grand entrance to the city and the beautiful guest houses for the devotees to stay. When entering, you will be asked to cover your heads. The first thing to come across you is ‘Gurbani Place.’ There is a tree known as ‘Shahedi Jand’ which is the symbol of victory day as 200 Sikhs led by Sardar Laxman Singh sacrificed their lives while taking back the control of Gurdwara Janam Asthan from Hindus on February 21st, 1921. They were all killed and Sardar Laxman was martyred by being first hanged upside down to the tree and then burnt alive. The incident is now known as ‘Nankana massacre’ and Mahatma Gandhi while addressing in Nankana Sahib appreciated that Sikhs in this drama remained peaceful and non-violent from the start to the end. The next beautiful thing which was displayed was a gold palki, gifted on November 19th, 2005, by Indian Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Amarinder Singh, stated to be worth Indian Rs15 million (Rs17.05 million in Pakistani currency).
