'Skunky' taste in beers is the result of photodegradation. Light sensitive chemicals in hops are converted into free radicals resulting in the familiar skunky taste. The exposure to light need not be very long for the skunkiness to set in - a few hours will do the trick. A local brewery sell their beer in clear growlers, but offers customers brown paper bags to protect their brew on the way home.

Brown glass filters enough light to prevent photodegradation. Green glass does not. Neither does clear glass.

Grolsch, Pilsner Urquell, Becks and Corona are examples of green or clear bottle beers. Skunkorama! Try the same beer out of a can (though Corona is not available in cans) or directly out of a keg - a beverage that has not seen light - and you will experience a whole different taste.
