Museu de disseny
The design museum, which opened in 2014, houses 70,000 objects from five centuries, giving visitors a wide-ranging overview of the history of design in Catalonia and Spain. The collection comes from smaller museums of decorative arts, ceramics, textiles, fashion and graphics.
The Museu del Disseny de Barcelona is situated at the Placa de les Glories in the district of Poble Nou in the north-east of Barcelona. It was opened in 2014 and was the result of a merger of different existing museums for applied art, such as the Museum of Ceramics, the Textile Museum and the Museum of Graphic Design.
The striking building at the edge of the Placa de les Glories is right next to the Torre Agbar which can be seen from afar. This was the beginning of the redesign of a formerly cheerless traffic junction in Barcelona. The ambitious project was designed and executed by the renowned architect's office MBM from Barcelona, namely the architects Josep Martorell and Oriol Bohigas, David Mackay, Oriol Capdevila and Francesc Gual. Work began in 2009 and the building was already finished in 2013.

'Skunky' taste in beers is the result of photodegradation. Light sensitive chemicals in hops are converted into free radicals resulting in the familiar skunky taste. The exposure to light need not be very long for the skunkiness to set in - a few hours will do the trick. A local brewery sell their beer in clear growlers, but offers customers brown paper bags to protect their brew on the way home.
Brown glass filters enough light to prevent photodegradation. Green glass does not. Neither does clear glass.
Grolsch, Pilsner Urquell, Becks and Corona are examples of green or clear bottle beers. Skunkorama! Try the same beer out of a can (though Corona is not available in cans) or directly out of a keg - a beverage that has not seen light - and you will experience a whole different taste.
Tijdens de Mash Up Material Night werden de grenzen van hout onderzocht. Hout is het enige bouwmateriaal dat klimaatneutraal is. Is het daarmee ook het materiaal van de toekomst? Experimenten met hout leiden tot zowel vernieuwende als omstreden toepassingen. Ontwerpers Marjan van Aubel, Lex Pott en Chris Kabel vertelden over hun eigen experimenten met dit veelzijdige materiaal. Moderator was ontwerper en onderzoeker Sophie Krier.
LEX POTT
Lex Pott heeft een grote interesse voor natuurlijke materialen, waaronder hout. In zijn ontwerpen gaat hij vaak uit van het materiaal zelf en maakt hij doelbewust de verschillende fasen in de bewerking van een materiaal ook zichtbaar in het eindproduct.
CHRIS KABEL
Chris Kabel ontwerpt gebruiksvoorwerpen, vaak door bestaande objecten en materialen vanuit een onverwacht perspectief te vervormen. Door een expliciete scheiding van functie, materiaal en vorm verwarren zijn ontwerpen: ze beschikken over eigenschappen die op grond van hun uiterlijk niet worden verwacht. Voor zijn innovatief materiaalgebruik won hij in 2009 de DOEN Materiaalprijs.
MARJAN VAN AUBEL
Marjan van Aubel komt uit een familie van scheikundigen, een achtergrond die bepalend is geweest voor haar werkwijze. Ze ontwikkelde ‘foaming wood’ door restmateriaal van hout met water en biologische hars te vermengen. Dat brengt een chemisch proces op gang dat vervolgens weer leidt tot pulp. Eenmaal uitgehard, past zij het materiaal toe in een serie meubelen.
TENTOONSTELLING HOUT
De Mash Up Material Night was onderdeel van het parallelprogramma georganiseerd in het kader van de tentoonstelling HOUT. De cyclische natuur van materialen, plekken en ideeën, te zien van 16 mei tot 10 augustus in Het Nieuwe Instituut.
