DESCRIPTION:
A skilled worker uses calipers to demonstrate the use of a metal lathe to a NYA trainee. Among other things, metal lathes such as this were used to manufacture gun barrels for the American war effort. Larger lathes such as this were, as of January 1941, beginning to turn out naval gun barrels across the road from the NYA program at the Naval Ordnance Plant's North Unit.

CONTEXT: Founded as one of many New Deal programs designed to alleviate joblessness at the height of the Great Depression, the National Youth Administration established job training and "work experience" programs across the country from 1935 to 1943. Utilizing several nonessential buildings at the Naval Ordnance Plant from 1939 to 1943, the South Charleston program quickly became one of the largest in the country, topping out at roughly 700 youth in 1941-42. While its early stages only included white males aged 17-24, the program later expanded to include female youth and African-Americans.

Description from the Lavender Line:
This humble looking 0-4-0 Diesel shunter was purchased by the Lavender Line Preservation Society in 2004 and is one of the railways own locomotives. She’s an air cooled chain driven diesel mechanical loco built during the mid 1960’s, although her history is very limited we do know she didn’t have a too rough of a life due to the good condition of the locomotive when it arrived late 2001.
Planet has been the railways work horse for a number of years due to the reliability of her and how economical she can run, up to very recently Planet was the only working diesels at the railway which meant she had not only the duties of morning shunts but active duties on passenger trains during quieter periods.
In 2006 she was repainted in a bright blue colour scheme a received a minor overhaul to ensure she caries on being a reliable and economical loco in the railways Locomotive fleet. Planet can sometimes be seen on off-peak running days as a substitute to steam or one of our other diesels Valiant.

This is the view of the property. No vegetation. It's quiet except for the wind. It's hot and theres bucket loads of work to do.
The journey
Previously at the lumber yard picking up the portable water containers. I got these from a long time mate at no cost who works at CEVA. Loading the containers with the forklift. As you can see we had access to a lot of extra resources at very short notice.
We had the truck loaded with 3000 litre capacity to store water. There is no power, no pump. The tank has been breached. The only fresh water is 5 kilometers away. Power has been supplied within 48hours through a simple petrol (not diesel, they'd all sold out) generator.
This is a shot in Whittlesea approaching the second Police line. To get in you need a special pass. They are pass out tags attached to a person who lives there. We have a spare - dont ask how! We passed the Police line and proceeded to the fire zone.
Turn off at Yea/Kinglake road. First view. This is the Kinglake West telephone exchange. It's new. The old one has burnt down. Connected to it is a generator running 24/7. Gone is Tommys Hut to the right. A fixture in Kinglake West since 1862.
