Showbus 2021 event, Hertfordshire County Showground, St Albans. 26/09/21

Description: Powwows are large social gatherings of Native Americans who follow traditional dances started centuries ago by their ancestors, and which continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events of drum music, dancing, singing, artistry and food, are attended by Natives and non-Natives, all of whom join in the dancing and take advantage of the opportunity to see old friends and teach the traditional ways to a younger generation. During the National Powwow, the audience see dancers in full regalia compete in several dance categories, including Men and Women's Golden Age (ages 50 and older); Men's Fancy Dance, Grass and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Women's Jingle Dress, Fancy Shawl, and Traditional (Northern and Southern); Teens (13-17); Juniors (6-12) and Tiny Tots (ages 5 and younger). The drum groups are the heart of all powwows and provide the pulsating and thunderous beats that accompany a dancer's every movement. The powwow is led by three "host drums" that showcase three distinct styles of singing (Northern, Southern and contemporary) and represent the best examples of each style. The drum contest highlights groups of 10 to 12 members each, and they sing traditional family songs that are passed down orally from one generation to the next. The National Museum of the American Indian sponsored the National Powwow in 2002, 2005, and 2007 as a way of presenting to the public the diversity and social traditions of contemporary Native cultures.

Description from the plaque on the opposite side:

The Tribute to Olympism and Hellenism sculpture stands 17 feet high, 24 feet wide and features three 9-foot running figures. Weighing over 8 tons, this bronze sculpture honors the three key cities and three main eras in Olympic history. The ancient runner represents the birth of the Olympics in Ancient Olympia, Greece, in 776 B.C.; the middle figure symbolizes the first games of the modern Olympic era in Athens, Greece, in 1896; and the female athlete represents the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996. The bronze fan element with random geometric patterns is reminiscent of ancient Hellenic art. The entire Sculpture rests on a bronze arch recreating the famous arch of Olympia through which athletes entered the ancient Olympic Stadium. The stones comprising the base of the sculpture are a gift from the people of Olympia, Greece to the people of Atlanta, Georgia.

Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Among the fifty or more social or more social organizations in Buenos Aires, the Jockey Club is the Argentine circle par excellence. Its wealth, derived from an initiation fee of $4000 and annual dues of $1500 for each member, and a "rake-off" of ten percent of the amounts wagered at its race-track, together with gate receipts, accumulate so rapidly that it is a source of genuine embarrassment to the governing board.

A short time ago the club voted to devote its surplus to the purchase of a dozen blocks in the heart of the city, the idea being to transform the tract into a beautiful boulevard. It would have cost nearly $14,000,000 in our money. The project was abandoned, not because of the cost, but on the ground of impracticability. During the racing season, held under the auspices of the Club at Palermo Park, the Porteno is seen at his best. Paris gowns and picture hats are displayed in profusion in the grandstand, lawns and luxurious victorias and automobiles that line the course, and with the correct dress and animation of the men, the prodigality everywhere in evidence, the scene takes on an aspect truly Parisian."

Description:

Mary Antin was an author and immigration rights activist. Born to a Jewish family in Polotsk in the Russian Pale of Settlement, she immigrated to the Boston area with her mother and siblings in 1894. Antin was heralded as a success story of what "free education and the European immigrant could make of each other," and in 1899 her letters to an uncle describing this journey were published as From Plotzk to Boston. Proceeds from the book allowed her to attend Girls' Latin School. During a field trip sponsored by Hale House, a settlement house in Boston's South End, she met geologist Amadeus William Grabau, a doctoral student at Harvard, whom she later married. They moved to New York where Grabau joined the faculty at Columbia University and where Antin attended college, at Columbia Teachers College (1901-1902) and at Barnard College (1902-1904). Antin was best known for her autobiography, The Promised Land (1912), for her lectures and writings advocating immigration, and for her support of Theodore Roosevelt and his Progressive Party.

Collection consists of a typed bound volume of 34 pages, entitled My Cuttyhunk Journal, May 27-30, 1899. It is interspersed with blank pages and includes 16 photographs, mostly of scenery (shorelines, boats, cliffs, docks) although several have people in them, including Antin. It is number one of a "Limited Edition of Four Signed copies." The text describes this excursion as "the first trip I took with Mr. Grabau and his class," but there is reference to an encounter with Mr. Grabau five years earlier. They sail from New Bedford and she mentions their study of the flora, fauna, and geology of Cuttyhunk Island; meeting Captain Fred Allen, who was known for inventing a number of life-saving devices for sailors; and sailing to Martha's Vineyard where she meets Native Americans John Vanderhoop and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper. The journal ends with a list of friends from whom she obtained autographs, including Ariel D. Savage, Myron E. Pierce, Frances Zirngiebel, and Helen M. Tower.

Description:

This Phra Pidta as shown is from Wat Taitalad Pim Kap Lap and

was created by Pra Puttakosajan Khun in B.E. 237x. Amulets from Wat Taitalad were one of the sought after amulets by the collectors as they were designed and crafted by Royal family artisans.

It is not easy to come across a Pra Pidta of Wat TaiTalad that is so well moulded. Based on it's condition, it had obtained 2nd placing in one of the major amulet competition held in B.E. 2549 in Bangkok.
