Deployment Plaques
From 2002 to 2014 there were thirty-four deployments of A-10s to Afghanistan made by fifteen different squadrons. These homemade plaques represent most of the thirty-four deployments. They were hung in the A-10 Operations Building and consist of a squadron photo, a wood block with the squadron's number painted on it, and a list of the pilots on the deployment.
THE BING
"The Bing" was an officer's lounge for A-10 pilots serving in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. “The Bing" was originally built in 2003 at Bagram Airfield by the 104th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron from the Maryland Air National Guard. In early 2003 officers of the 104th were tasked to build officer barracks to replace the drafty and dusty tents used by A-10 pilots. The squadron along with an Afghan contractor built a compound of B-Huts, temporary plywood barracks designed to house up to eight people.
One of the B-Huts was modified into a half living quarters and half pilot's lounge or day room. The lounge was officially named "The Bada Bing!" after a fictional club on the TV show The Sopranos. In June 2003, the 104th rotated out and handed over "The Bing," her inventories, and customs to the next A-10 squadron. This tradition of hand-offs continued with each squadron rotation. Eventually "The Bing" took over the complete B-Hut and included a bar, hidden storage for consumables, a deck, televisions, video games, and a small theater.
During the summer of 2009 the A-10s were repositioned from Bagram Airfield to Kandahar Airfield. At that time, everything inside "The Bing" and the A-10s Operations Building was packed up and shipped to Kandahar. In Kandahar, a new location was found for "The Bing. In 2012 A-10s returned to Bagram Airfield. Once again the items inside "The Bing" and the Operations Building were taken down and shipped back to Bagram. During October thru November 2014, the 163rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron from Indiana Air National Guard and 303rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron from the Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri became what was expected at the time to be the last A-10 squadrons assigned to Afghanistan. When they left Bagram, they took everything off the walls of the Bing and the Operations Building, packed them up, and put them into storage.
What you see on display are a mix of items from “The Bing" and the A-10 Operations Building. Near the flight line, the Operations Building served various squadron functions, it was where pilots gathered before flights, received briefings, and gave debriefings. It had a lounge area with a TV, an outdoor gym, and a store to buy squadron swag.

The Big Stick
Theodore Roosevelt said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." In 1948, the Soviet Union stopped ground traffic to West Berlin. Speaking softly - with unarmed transports - the United States and its allies showed their resolve and ability to keep a city supplied with food and fuel with 15 months, entirely by air. To provide the "big stick", the 28th Bombardment Group deployed their B-29s to England, within striking distance of Moscow. They carried no nuclear bombs, but could Soviet spies be sure of that? The B-29s were a potent warning, ensuring that the Berlin Blockade ended peacefully.
A standard load in the bomb bay was forty 500-pound conventional bombs.
On the B-29, gunners had computer-aided targeting and could control the guns remotely from different locations.

Honoring the Past, Present and Future
Orlando, Fla. - Thunderstorms did not stop dozens of Soldiers, retired service members and their families from gathering at Moss Park in Orlando Sept. 11, 2021, for the inaugural 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) / 143d Transportation Command alumni reunion.
Soldiers who served with the 143d as far back as the 1980s reunited with their brothers- and sisters-in-arms while sharing stories of their respective missions, mobilizations, and deployments while serving in the 143d. Service members formally introduced themselves and exchanged contact information over a catered lunch provided by Veterans Hardwood Smoked BBQ.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of September 11, those in attendance dedicated a moment of silence to the victims of the tragedy and paid tribute to all first responders and service members who answered the call on that fateful day and those served in the ensuing conflicts in the two decades that followed.
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Michael D. Schultz, who once served as the command sergeant major of the 143d ESC, command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Reserve, and, most recently, the senior enlisted advisor for the Assistant Secretary of Defense, presented a plaque to retired Master Sgt. Claudine "CJ" Jarrett-Gomez for her efforts as the chief organizer for the reunion.
"I want to thank each attendee for reuniting with past members and meeting and making new friends," said Jarrett-Gomez. "This event was successful because of you and any future success will be based solely on your efforts to spread the word to other former and current members of the 143d of this reunion effort."
Jarett-Gomez and her planning committee seek to make the alumni reunion an annual affair.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that, as of September 1, 1998, air bags have saved 3,448 lives (2,954 drivers, 494 passengers) since they were first installed in quantity in the late 1980s. During the same period 115 people (66 of them children) have been killed by air bags, with another 40 unconfirmed deaths, for a total of 155. So we're talking 22 lives saved for every one lost. It's estimated that air bags reduce the risk of dying in a direct frontal collision by 30 percent.
