The wreck of the Mama Viña sits upright in about 30m/96ft of water, ever defying the prevailing current with a turn in to the port side. This steel hulled trawler was intentionally sunk in 1996 after having suffered extensive damage while running aground during a hurricane. Located just south of Xcaret, the sunken vessel is often host to barracuda, jacks, and other schooling fish. The current here can be quite strong at times. While the Mama Viña makes an excellent introduction to wreck diving, recreational divers not trained in overhead environments should avoid entering the open foreward pump bay and central corridors. This was my first time getting bit by cleaner wrasse. Most of the other sites I dive the cleaner wrasse don't actually interact much with divers. This fish might have been somewhat hungry. I didn't see a great "cleaning station." Cleaning stations are places where other bigger fish come and "park" so that the cleaner wrasse can pick off parasites. Maybe I looked especially dirty. It wasn't terrible pain, but unexpected and created some anxiety about trying to take photos in that area.

This school of anemone fish was living on a Haddon’s Sea Anemone. Usually this arrangement with Haddon’s makes the fish lighter in color. A conical shell was right next to their anemone. The anemone fish attached all their eggs to it. If you zoom in on this photo (flic.kr/p/29F64B9) you can see algae growing on the eggs. The parents (breeding pair) were cleaning the eggs constantly with their mouths.

I'm fairly certain on this species. I think it looks more "speckled" than "spotted," but that's not a species. A rarer find for me. In Nago, I usually see more "greyface" or "white eyed" moray eels. Taken with a Nikon D850 using a 105mm lens and a 1.7 teleconverter. Not cropped. This was a lovely eel who was very photogenic. It has a bit of sediment on it's head which may have already been there, or may have been from my own movements. A really satisfying shot in which I have both bokeh and depth of focus. Truly excellent technology combined with a bit of luck.

60 feet of water
These clams are fairly common at the 60 foot and below depth. I've seen some quite large specimens. Usually they close so quickly I can't do a close examination on them. However, I was able to get this nice shot with my Nikon D-850. If you look at the upper ege on a ZOOM you will see clam eyes. Shawn Miller (#yeahiknowshawnmiller) verified that clams do indeed have eyes. I googled a few photos, but this clam's eyes are better than other photos I've seenh. Getting a super macro shot on these eyes may require more luck tha I can muster!

The wreck of the Mama Viña sits upright in about 30m/96ft of water, ever defying the prevailing current with a turn in to the port side. This steel hulled trawler was intentionally sunk in 1996 after having suffered extensive damage while running aground during a hurricane. Located just south of Xcaret, the sunken vessel is often host to barracuda, jacks, and other schooling fish. The current here can be quite strong at times. While the Mama Viña makes an excellent introduction to wreck diving, recreational divers not trained in overhead environments should avoid entering the open foreward pump bay and central corridors. Although the wreck has only spent a few years on the sea floor, coral and stinging hydroids have quite effectively covered most all surfaces. Gloves and a long wetsuit are highly recommended. This is not a difficult dive, but given the depth, potential for current, overhead environment, and possibility of entanglement or separation, it should be considered an advanced site.
The day of the dive, there was no wind, the sea was extremely calm and no current at the surface. There was a small drift at the bottom. The vessel exploration was a lot of fun. I couldn’t get into the engine chamber at it was too tight getting in with my camera.
Equipment used: Ikelite Housing, Nikon D200, Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 @ f/9, 2 Strobes (Ikelite DS-50 and Nikonos SB-105) all in manual control.

The divers are fitted with all the gear required for a safe a successful dive; safety is major factor while divers are working underwater. The Nashville District Corps Dive Team uses the U.S. Navy dive tables to determine safe times allowed at the various depths. The dive helmet is a Kirby Morgan SuperLite 37 with Surface Supplied Air. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District divers remove a worn and old railing that would no longer allow the bulkhead to set correctly at Wilson Lock in Florence, Ala., Sept. 23, 2011. Cargo ship Kyra Eleni, (former OTTA), registry of Piraeus 2290, IDL:SWZR, gross registered tonnage 2290 TR and net registered tonnage 1071 TR, carrying capacity 3658 tons, length 99m, built in 1949 at TRONDHZEMS M/V shipyard in TRONDHZEM, Norway, powered by a MAN engine 1890 BHP, speed 12 knots.
On the 5th January 1978 at 21.00 p.m she sailed from Lavrio port to Bulgaria non-carrying and with ballast.
At midnight the weather was getting worse and worse. At around 01.00 a.m on the 6th January 1978 in Cavo Doro she came across severe northeastern wind Beaufort force 8.
Since the weather conditions were about to get even worse according to previous weather forecasts, the captain decided to resort to Karystos bay till they got better. The dark, the heavy rain, the other anchored ships and the strong regional winds increased the risk level and the captain led the ship up and down the leeward side till dawn. Nevertheless, at 07.00 a.m on 6/1/78 the strong winds reached Beaufort force 10-11 and the ship was not able to turn back to Karystos. Instead, she headed southwest towards a leeward bay of Sounio.
At 12.30 she tried to sail into Legrena gulf. Once again the sailing in was cancelled due to strong winds and the captain decided to resort to the leeward side of Patroclos Island waiting for the weather to get better. When she approached it, the crew was ready to anchor near the coast.
Due to strong winds the ship could not be steered efficiently. She could not head full astern and despite the cast anchor her port crashed against the rocks. Moving back she listed on the left and cast her right anchor. Water started coming in through the engine room and hold number 2. An SOS was sent out. All passengers abandoned the ship and reached land using a rope ladder.

While exploring Trinity Bay with Sea of Whales Adventures we were fortunate enough to have an encounter with not one but two sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the area near Bonaventure Head. Their dives were conveniently synchronized so that when one dove deep into the Trench, the other surfaced just minutes later and treated us to a series of spouts at the surface. When he dove in turn, the first whale came back up -- we hung in for close to an hour enjoying the spectacle!
Later in the day on Monday 19 October there was also Deep Dive into the work of the Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response (EPPR) Working Group of the Arctic Council. The room was full of extremely experienced contributors.
