Seen around 60 feet as we transited the fisherman/shark hangout area of the reef. At first i thought this was a Greasy Reefcod, but its size was immense! When i looked at the photos it is clearly not the same grouper. It spent all its time in the rocks and retreating back deeper. I liked this shot best sincethe shadowing of the mouth and luminance on the eye make it looks menacing, but it was a very cautious fish in reality. The lines of the body folded on itself also lend a dynamic effect to the picture.

The San Francisco Maru was a 385ft/117m, 5,831-ton Passenger-Cargo ship built in 1919 for Yamashita Kisen Kabushiki Kaisha as part of its fleet involved in world trade operations in minerals such as coal, bauxite, and phosphate for transportation to the Empire. The word ‘Maru’ designates a merchant vessel. Following requisition by the Japanese Navy, it was assigned to convey Japanese Navy Branch military cargoes between the Japanese homeland and the Inner South Seas.
On May 4th 1943 Allied intelligence intercepted a damage report from the San Francisco Maru’s commander saying that she had received minor damage from attacking aircraft at Wewak, New Guinea. Following repairs, later prisoner interrogations revealed that she arrived at Truk Lagoon on February 5th 1944. Aerial photos show her lying at the 4th Fleet anchorage southeast of Dublon.
San Francisco MaruFollowing early bombing attacks against ships in that anchorage on the first day of Operation Hailstorm, the San Francisco Maru was observed on fire with smoke arising amidships. On February 18th 1944 air groups from the USS Yorktown, USS Bunker Hill and the USS Essex attacked her. She was hit by six 500-lb bombs dropped by aircraft from the USS Essex, and was reported to be burning furiously and sinking stern first. Five crewmembers were killed as a result of these air attacks.
This wreck is loaded with war materials and one of Truk Lagoon’s most fascinating. She lies very deep, and rests on an even keel with the superstructure at 140ft/42m, deck at 165 ft/50m, and the sea bottom at 210ft/64m. There is a beautiful bow gun, and 3 armored 3-man light tanks and a flatbed truck are located on the main deck. Two large trucks are located in Hold No. 2 and the other holds are filled with interesting war material, such as fuel drums, hose sections, ammunition crates and artillery shells, torpedo bodies, aircraft bombs, depth charges, airplane engines and aircraft wheel assemblies. Hold No 1 is crammed with hemispherical mines, cordite containers, crates of artillery shells and aircraft bombs. Much of this material was brought to Truk Lagoon by the San Francisco Maru in anticipation of expected amphibious landings by U.S. troops.

Hammerhead shark encounter in the open ocean 12 miles off of the southern tip of Baja @ 120 ft.
This was my first experience diving in the deep blue ocean with no visible bottom and a lot of water above and below me. About 5 minutes into the dive, a school of Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna lewini) appeared out of the abyss. There were about 100 of them, each 5 to 8 feet long. The hammerheads never came closer than about 40-50 feet away and at no time did I have any fear of this notably non-aggressive shark species. They circled us once; quickly determining that we weren't something worth eating, and then vanished back into the deep blue.
Not a great shark photo, but it shows how one large hammerhead appeared from the diver's perspective. This one lingered after most of the others had moved on - Gordo Banks, Sea of Cortez, B.C.S., Mexico

A prolific and reliably seen nudibranch, I am always greeted by them on my dives. They range in size from quite small to large. They have a tendenc to hold on with the caudal section (rear end) of their body and try to climb/find purchase with their rostral end (front part). This one was spotted on the way to the exit after 95 minutes at depth with 500psi, which any diver knows is when you see the best creatures!

After going 12 miles straight out into the open ocean off the southern tip of Baja, our group of 7 divers dove down to 110 to 120 feet beneath the waves on the first of 2 "blue water" deep dives. This was my first experience diving in the deep blue ocean with no visible bottom and a lot of water above and below me. About 5 minutes into the dive, a school of Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna lewini) appeared out of the abyss. There were about 100 of them, each 5 to 8 feet long. Cargo ship Kyra Eleni, (former OTTA), registry of Piraeus 2290, IDL:SWZR, gross registered tonnage 2290 TR and net registered tonnage 1071 TR, carrying capacity 3658 tons, length 99m, built in 1949 at TRONDHZEMS M/V shipyard in TRONDHZEM, Norway, powered by a MAN engine 1890 BHP, speed 12 knots.
On the 5th January 1978 at 21.00 p.m she sailed from Lavrio port to Bulgaria non-carrying and with ballast.
At midnight the weather was getting worse and worse. At around 01.00 a.m on the 6th January 1978 in Cavo Doro she came across severe northeastern wind Beaufort force 8.
Since the weather conditions were about to get even worse according to previous weather forecasts, the captain decided to resort to Karystos bay till they got better. The dark, the heavy rain, the other anchored ships and the strong regional winds increased the risk level and the captain led the ship up and down the leeward side till dawn. Nevertheless, at 07.00 a.m on 6/1/78 the strong winds reached Beaufort force 10-11 and the ship was not able to turn back to Karystos. Instead, she headed southwest towards a leeward bay of Sounio.
At 12.30 she tried to sail into Legrena gulf. Once again the sailing in was cancelled due to strong winds and the captain decided to resort to the leeward side of Patroclos Island waiting for the weather to get better. When she approached it, the crew was ready to anchor near the coast.
Due to strong winds the ship could not be steered efficiently. She could not head full astern and despite the cast anchor her port crashed against the rocks. Moving back she listed on the left and cast her right anchor. Water started coming in through the engine room and hold number 2. An SOS was sent out. All passengers abandoned the ship and reached land using a rope ladder.
Kyra Eleni sank at 14.50 on the 6th January 1978.

These fish range in size from 12 to 30 inches and at maturity can weigh over 20 lbs. Interestingly, according to all the ID books and web sites my dive buddy and I found, this species is only known from New Caledonia, in the subtropcis of the Southern hemisphere. This one we found at 70 m, at Monad seamount in the Philippines.

On this day, Shawn Miller and I went out looking for pygmy seahorse. On the way out i noticed this thready creature moving on a reef segment. It is clearly a tiny sea dragon. This photo coincided with the plankton spawn, so a recently hatched pipefish makes sense. Lovely young specimen in any case.

After going about 12 miles straight out into the open ocean off the southern tip of Baja, our group of 7 divers dove down to 110 to 120 feet beneath the waves on the first of 2 "blue water" deep dives. This was my first experience diving in the deep blue ocean with no visible bottom and a lot of water above and below me. Our goal was to encounter Hammerhead sharks and other pelagic fish species. In this shot my dive buddy, Barbara, shows how we were weightlessly suspended in the deep blue void - Gordo Banks, Sea of Cortez, B.C.S., Mexico

A sleeping adult Dusky Parrotfish (Scarus niger) sleeping. Sleeping parrotfish protect themselves from predators by creating a mucous bubble to sleep in. It keeps their delicious fishy odor out of the water so no predators come to eat them. They don't have eyelids, so they can't close their eyes. This fish was sleeping, and I was able to get a nice close shot without waking him up.

Saw this micronudibranch under a rocky overhang on the seawall. It was not longer than 2cm. Loved the benefit of the teleconverter with this specimen.
The second photo I am posting of this specimen. It was quite small and at an odd angle. With the 200mm equivalent lens, I had a hard time framing it and avoiding damaging the reef. This is cropped andthe colors were manipulated in Lightroom.

The paddlesteamer Patris was built in 1860 by Lungley, London, had a tonnage of 641 tons and length of 66 metres and was owned at the time of her loss by the Hellenic Steam Shipping Co., Syra.
On February 23, 1868, while on a voyage with 400 passengers and crew from Piraeus to Syros, Patris struck at Koundouros reef in Kea island in bad visibility. She broke in two pieces the next day and sank in deeper waters at depths ranging from 30 to 55 meters. There were no casualties.
Note: PSS Patris was originally known as the KING OTHON and was ordered by King Otto (later King Othon) of Greece, together with sistership QUEEN AMALIA (later EVNOMIA). Both ships were transfered to the Hellenic lines, when the king and queen were expelled from Greece.

At the end of along dive, I noted this Hypselodoris moving among the sand and vegetation. Again, probaly too large for good super macro, and moving way too fash. I kept "just pushing the button" and eventually got somwhat lucky. Rhinopores are appreciated fairly well in this photograph.

Cargo ship Kyra Eleni, (former OTTA), registry of Piraeus 2290, IDL:SWZR, gross registered tonnage 2290 TR and net registered tonnage 1071 TR, carrying capacity 3658 tons, length 99m, built in 1949 at TRONDHZEMS M/V shipyard in TRONDHZEM, Norway, powered by a MAN engine 1890 BHP, speed 12 knots.
On the 5th January 1978 at 21.00 p.m she sailed from Lavrio port to Bulgaria non-carrying and with ballast.
At midnight the weather was getting worse and worse. At around 01.00 a.m on the 6th January 1978 in Cavo Doro she came across severe northeastern wind Beaufort force 8.
Since the weather conditions were about to get even worse according to previous weather forecasts, the captain decided to resort to Karystos bay till they got better. The dark, the heavy rain, the other anchored ships and the strong regional winds increased the risk level and the captain led the ship up and down the leeward side till dawn. Nevertheless, at 07.00 a.m on 6/1/78 the strong winds reached Beaufort force 10-11 and the ship was not able to turn back to Karystos. Instead, she headed southwest towards a leeward bay of Sounio.
At 12.30 she tried to sail into Legrena gulf. Once again the sailing in was cancelled due to strong winds and the captain decided to resort to the leeward side of Patroclos Island waiting for the weather to get better. When she approached it, the crew was ready to anchor near the coast.
Due to strong winds the ship could not be steered efficiently. She could not head full astern and despite the cast anchor her port crashed against the rocks. Moving back she listed on the left and cast her right anchor. Water started coming in through the engine room and hold number 2. An SOS was sent out. All passengers abandoned the ship and reached land using a rope ladder.
Kyra Eleni sank at 14.50 on the 6th January 1978.
