Shilton church is a mostly 14th/15th century building with a west tower and an unusual configuration of no aisle on the south side of the nave but a double one to the north; the outer aisle is a Victorian addition by George Gilbert Scott when he restored the church in 1865.
The interior is fairly dark with the south nave wall and north arcade leaning outwards dramatically (also an odd hollowed out piscina recess in the south east nave window recess). The fittings are mostly Victorian, but the pieces of tracery on the low chancel screen panelling are fragments of the 15th century rood screen. The stained glass is Victorian too, (the east window by Clayton & Bell, others by Hardman's) but two windows have 14th century elements, the west window in the tower with some fragmentary grisaille and red glass, whilst in the nave clerestorey are two shields of the Earl of Essex.
The church is usually kept locked outside of service times; I owed my first visit to the help of a kind churchwarden who unlocked for me. On this occasion my former colleagues from Norgrove Studios were working on a south nave window enabling me to revisit and give a short talk on the glass (in addition to much improving my photographic record).

On 30th January, 2017, in a ceremony that took place at the premises of “Pedion Areos” camp – Thessaloniki, Lieutenant General Alkiviadis STEFANIS, after one year of successful accomplishments, handed over the Command of C’ Army Corps & NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Greece (NRDC-GR) to Lieutenant General Dimitrios BIKOS, who assumed the command of both Headquarters by order of the Hellenic Governmental Council for Foreign and Defense Affairs.
The event honored with their presence the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff Admiral Evaggelos APOSTOLAKIS, the Commander of NATO Allied Land Command (LANDCOM) Lieutenant General Darryl A. WILLIAMS, representatives of the religious, military and political authorities from the city of Thessaloniki, General Consuls from the contributing to NRDC-GR Nations and other distinguished visitors.
Lieutenant General Alkiviadis STEFANIS, whose new assignment is that of the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS), mentioned during his farewell speech “It has been an important and challenging year, in which C’ Army Corps & NRDC-GR have transformed themselves with hard work and new commitments while continuously enhancing their military capabilities in various exercises and missions”. Regarding the personnel added “Every single one, national and allied personnel you have played a critical role in NRDC-GR certification and path to become a JTF HQ, and even more you have been engaged in an ongoing refugee and migrant support operation”.
Furthermore, he added “NRDC-GR as a multinational HQ, having the privilege to host international personnel from the participating nations, I would like to express our warmest appreciation and deepest gratitude to them and their countries for supporting us by providing their expertise, professionalism and dedication in order to achieve our goals. To have been able to serve as the NRDC-GR Commander and be a member of the NATO team alongside each one of you, it has been the greatest privilege and a supreme honor”.
The new commander of C’ Army Corps & NRDC-GR, Lieutenant General Dimitrios BIKOS, in his order of the day said “Today our HQ has already met the required standards of a modern high readiness NATO HQ and is ready for the ultimate challenge to become a Joint HQ of Land Operations and thus a valuable tool of Defense Diplomacy”. Additionally, he said “I am looking forward to work hard with you in order to mark our own history of NRDC-GR development”.
The Chief of Defense, Admiral Evaggelos APOSTOLAKIS, expressed his great satisfaction for the last years achievements towards the transition of NRDC-GR to Joint Task Force Headquarters, noted the contribution of the Hellenic personnel from both C’ Army Corps and NRDC-GR to the migrant issue, while extended his wishes to the assuming Commander for success in his new duties.
In the end of the ceremony Commander LANDCOM had the opportunity to discuss with the Greek CHOD and the new Chief of HAGS about issues of common interest. The event concluded with a reception that took place in the premises of NRDC-GR HQ where all distinguished visitors and the Hellenic Armed Forces leadership had the opportunity to exchange further wishes with both the new Chief of HAGS and the new Commander of C’ Army Corps & NRDC-GR.
St Michael's at Boldmere in Birmingham's northern suburbia, a church which is a bit of a surprising fusion of contrasting architectural styles of Victorian Gothic and 1960s Modernism.
What one initially sees on approach appears to be the original 1857 building, but following an arson attack in 1964 it was largely rebuilt (reopening in 1967) in contrasting contemporary style, retaining the complete south aisle and steeple at the north-west corner and rebuilding the rest. The new nave occupies the site of the old nave and north aisle, thus is a fairly spacious room, bizarrely joined to an otherwise intact Victorian aisle (now subdivided at its west end).
The glass is especially interesting, the east window of the aisle is beautiful late Morris & Co glass by John Henry Dearle (in typically Burne Jonesian style) whilst the glazed frieze of the new east wall is filled with a collage of fragments of Hardman's windows salvaged after the fire, presumably set in its current arrangement by Claude Price (who added a new head of Christ at the centre).
The church isn't normally open except for services and mornings when the parish administrator is in.
Inauguration Week activities continued Wednesday as the campus community dedicated the Chancellors Foyer and its collection of portraits of past UW-Superior presidents and chancellors. Laura Jacobs, right, the university archivist and a library science faculty member, presented a brief program about the chancellors and their legacy to the institution.
