Not many parents could bring a 50+ pound passenger in a sidecar over the North Cascades passes. (Part of a series I took with an OM-1 on an auto-winder mounted to the back of my bike while riding across the state. These days I'd do this with a digital camera an not have to worry about bulky equipment, manual focus lenses, or fogging the film when a screw fell out the bottom of the camera because of vibration.)

Emilie Siarkiewicz, left, and Dwaine Bright look at the Confederate Memorial dedicated Saturday morning outside the special area of the Southern Arizona Veterans’ Cemetery in Sierra Vista.
Siarkiewicz, of Tucson, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Bright, who is wearing a Confederate cavalryman’s uniform, is from Sierra Vista, were part of a group who were at the event to honor about 10 percent of the nearly 60 remains of soldiers from the 1880s who were initially buried in Tucson and were reburied in Sierra Vista in a pageant-filled ceremony last year. Some who once served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War went on to serve in the American Army, side-by-side with those who fought for the Union, during the Indian wars in the late 1800s in Arizona.
On the northern side of the entrance to the special cemetery-within-a-cemetery — officially called the Historical Soldiers Memorial Cemetery — is a memorial from the Grand Army of the Republic honoring the former Union soldiers and appropriately the Confederate Memorial is on the south side of the entrance. Saturday’s event included taped music of the National Anthem played in an arrangement of the period of the Civil War, Dixie, which is considered the Confederate national song, and the firing of a cannon.
