Day 38: February 7, 2010 - Dedication

Today I ran in the Condura 10k run. It was my first time to participate in a run that long. Normally I would participate in 3k and 5k runs, but I was finding 5k less of a challenge. Before I knew it, I was done with 5k.

10k was tough. I was glad I didn't succumb to attraction of running a 21k atop the Skyway. I had to keep an even pace. This was an hour-long run. I shouldn't blow off all my energy in the first half of the run. Somewhere around the 7k mark I had to slow down my pace. Several times I had the urge to stop and walk to catch my breath. But I had to toughen my resolve. I shouln't stop, I told myself. I can get through this. I ignored the pain that was gnawing my back. My right ankle felt like it was going to sieze but I ignored that as well.

It all paid off in the end. I expected to clock in at 70 minutes. With about 100 meters left, I saw the finish line and the clock. I saw that it was just seconds past the one hour mark. Not bad, I told myself, considering that several months ago I was clocking 35 minutes in a 5k treadmill run.

Now this may sound corny, but life and relatioships are just like that. You may prepare for it, but it is actually tougher than anything you can imagine. It takes mental resolve to get through it. If it is something you cherish and value, then quitting should not be an option.

This week the auditorium at my old high school (Flagler Palm Coast High School) was dedicated to my father who passed away in 1996. Besides burdening the school system with six children, Dad was on the school board for many years.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it down there for the dedication, but I'm told it was very nice.

Here's a link to the auditorium website and a Google map of the auditorium and high school: Map

For all the time the students, teachers, and families put into being a part of this is nothing less than great commitment.

An Air Force pilot who put his jet into Madison's Lake Monona rather than risking a crash in a heavily populated neighborhood was honored Saturday (May 9, 2009).

Brig. Gen. John McCoy, Deputy Adjutant General for Air of the Wisconsin National Guard, spoke with Stull's widow, Alice Baggett before the dedication ceremony.

A bronze plaque honoring Air Force Lt. Gerald Stull was dedicated at Hudson Park. Stull died May 5, 1958, after he flew into the lake and ejected at the last moment.

Observers say Stull could have tried to land a few miles away at Truax Field, but if the plane didn't make it, it could have hit a school, church, homes or several factories.
